If you are thinking of repainting your kitchen cupboards

Then here is a thread to document my progress!
I have boring melamine cupboard doors which a a dirty cream colour. Can't afford a new kitchen so after much research I decided to repaint them. I was inspired by this picture on Pinterest:
I chose Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint in Cotton for the top doors, and Ink for the bottom.
I've almost done the top ones - see pic for a sort of before and after!
Handles are from Amazon.
Going to start the bottom doors tonight! When they're done I'm thinking of covering the worktop in DC Fix - have a few samples which I might need some MN help with!

How funny. I ordered some Rustoleum sample sachets this week and just received them today so I'm looking forward to trying them out tomorrow. Think I'll go for Serenity which is a sage green but have some blue shades to try too!

Yours looks fab! A proper glow-up. Smile

Cuddlywaterfall · 17/09/2021 22:06

@RiotAtTheRodeo thank you! The green shades are gorgeous too, I'll be expecting pics!!

@Cuddlywaterfall

First 2 bottom doors are on. What is the MN verdict?
I love it.. it's a lovely shade that works so well with the top cupboards
halfpasteleven · 17/09/2021 22:18

Also keep the progress pics coming!

MajorNeville · 17/09/2021 22:24

My mum and dad repainted their wooden kitchen, it looks fantastic. Yours is looking great so far.

AgnesNaismith · 17/09/2021 22:30

I love them! Wish I could do the same but mine are gloss!

Is the gloss like a plastic coating? You can usually remove this, sometimes using a hairdryer to help lift the coating.
AgnesNaismith · 17/09/2021 22:54

I don’t know! It’s a newbuild kitchen, I’m scared to do anything in case I ruin it…but I didn’t choose it and don’t like the cupboards at all!

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 10:39

👏🏻

Cuddlywaterfall · 18/09/2021 21:29

Today's progress below. I'm losing a bit of momentum I must admit, it's getting a bit boring and my hands are in bits, waaah. Oh well, not too much left I suppose. I've done all the really horrible part of the plinth or whatever it is under the cupboards. I was fuelled by wine though! Grin

I think it looks brilliant! Keep going, you are so nearly there.

Tittie · 22/09/2021 08:14

Hi OP, I'm thinking of doing the same as you, are you happy with how it looks and the quality of the paint? It looks great so far!

chipsandpeas · 22/09/2021 08:29

that looks brilliant, im thinking of doing something similar but wary as i usually fuck things like this up but this give me hope and inspiration

SciFiScream · 22/09/2021 08:41

Do you think Rustoleum paint would paint an IKEA dining table without too much prep?

Kitchen looks fab. Well done. Keep going.

niki26 · 22/09/2021 11:02

That looks amazing!!!

Cuddlywaterfall · 22/09/2021 11:04

Hi all! Sorry for radio silence. I'm almost done! ( see photo). I need 3 more handles so I'm waiting on those before I do the last 3 drawers.
@chipsandpeas I'm not arty or skilled at all but I managed to make it look ok. I practiced on the white ones which are more forgiving, then went on to the blue. I'd say my tips are, make sure each coat is thoroughly dry before doing the next one, or putting handles on etc. Like leave overnight kind of thing. Once the paint is on and dry it's absolutely solid and not going anywhere!
Then use decent brushes for the first coat otherwise you'll have bloody hairs stuck in the paint for eternity. Finally finish with a foam roller. There is a good selection in Leyland DIY.
I have noticed little areas that need touching up once the doors are on, I think the light in my kitchen is better. So I'll be patrolling with my tiny paint brush after the kids are in bed.
@SciFiScream I'd give it a try, it seems pretty hardy and worst case scenario you can always buy a tablecloth Grin

I've realised I said earlier about how quickly the paint dries. It does, but as I went on I twigged that the finish was much better if I waited and basically curbed my impatience!

Oh oh and final tip from someone who learned the hard way Blush. Wash your brush immediately after you have finished painting. Do not leave it. Otherwise it will dry and harden forever more and you will have to bin it.

Or wrap it in clingfilm!

The kitchen is complete! It looks absolutely fabulous and the hubby has done good, he's relaxing with a well earned beer.

Looks great @Cuddlywaterfall - I have been watching with interest. What would you do with my kitchen, see below.

I'm hoping to disguise the ugly central band of brown tiles but may just have to rip them out!

Kitchen Tile Makeover Hell www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/4358630-kitchen-tile-makeover-hell

Cuddlywaterfall · 25/09/2021 18:44

@OneFootintheRave ooh a challenge!
I actually think even one coat makes a big difference, it has definitely muted the browniness. I'd give it another coat and see how it looks rather than re-tile but that's cos I'm skint Grin. Love the idea of stencilling on top of it.
I did think of the vinyl (DC Fix) but it might be tricky as it's not a smooth surface. You could order a couple of samples, I got some from Create Your World. I was surprised how thin it is so I'm rethinking my plan to recover my worktop.

This thread is so inspiringSmile
I’ve been painting pine bedroom furniture but am now thinking of progressing to kitchen cupboards.
Do you think it would Work on these , not proper wood ?

Cuddlywaterfall · 25/09/2021 20:20

@Colette definitely! You don't need to sand or prime with Rustoleum. What colour were you thinking?
