Hi there, we had this made today but really don’t like it now! The guy is coming back tomorrow so hoping to have it amended where I can (it’s nit finished as you can see). Thinking to at least lower the seating (as currently too high) and also loose the corner unit? What do you think? Or shall I just have it completely removed? Confused

What the higher box thing in the middle? It looks very odd.

ineedaholidayandwine · 21/04/2021 18:39

I like it

My guess was a table
GreyhoundG1rl · 21/04/2021 18:41

No, the thing between the two sets of seats. In the corner.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2021 18:42

I as wondering that, it looks weird

yes, it looks like it is supposed to be a corner table between the seats.
zaffa · 21/04/2021 18:43

I think the box between the two seats is like a side table for drinks etc. I think it looks fine OP - practical use of space

fruitbrewhaha · 21/04/2021 18:44

Is it in a kid's toy room? Its all very hard, the floor the lighting etc. I think it could work but you need a rug and perhaps a lamp in the corner to make everything feel softer and add some texture.

steppemum · 21/04/2021 18:46

you can't ask the carpenter to lower it. Well you can, but that basically means taking the whole thing out and starting again.
There isn;t much he/she can do to change it now.

Think back to why you wanted it. What is your purpose?
Is this evening/TV watching seating? Who would use it and when?
That should inform what sort of seating it is and why it is there.

Personally I can't imagine when I would sit on a seat like that, other than in a waiting room, or if there was a dining table in front of it.

So that is why I say, what do you envisage using it for and when?

MummyDummyNow · 21/04/2021 18:46

What room is that OP? If it's just to sit down to pop shoes or boots on, I'd say it's fine. Kids playroom also good, but maybe lower it a bit. If it's a sitting room, somewhere you're going to sit for a while it does look a little odd and not that comfortable.

Turmerictolly · 21/04/2021 18:46

Yes, make the corner bit lower and use as a side table. Rug, lamps and colourful cushions will soften the look.

fruitbrewhaha · 21/04/2021 18:49

Also some colour, perhaps a couple printed cushions, then some paintings on the wall, a shelf with some nice ornaments. I reckon its fine, you just need to dress it up.

You could paint it a nice teal colour to match your sofa I can just see in the corner. That would improve it. Also your walls, the wall behind the unit could be teal to match.

Its just all a bit bland and needs colour, texture and interest.

Waitforwhat · 21/04/2021 18:59

Well, attaching inspiration here, agree it will need some dressing up! To give more context this is in a kitchen dinner...

I like it. Once you've accessorised it'll be lovely!

listershologram · 21/04/2021 19:02

It's be fine for a boot room but not much else.

Waitforwhat · 21/04/2021 19:02

Kitchen/dinner/living/seating area! Arrrgh what a nightmare! So annoyed with myself for not thinking this through 😟

Neptunesgiraffe · 21/04/2021 19:07

It looks really lovely. I've been looking for something similar. I'd put a nice lamp on the raised bit. And I like your cushions more than the ones in the picture.

LizzieMacQueen · 21/04/2021 19:07

@Waitforwhat You might want to edit the photo to remove your child.

I'd say the height would be fine for adults.

ItsSnowJokes · 21/04/2021 19:11

I like it. Once table and accessories are in it will be great.

Waitforwhat · 21/04/2021 19:19

How do I do that? Do I need to contact mumsnet?

OP posts:
LionLily · 21/04/2021 19:19

Will you be placing a dining/craft/board games table there? If so, I think you will regret lowering the seats.
If not, you could lower the height of the plinth it is sitting on - I do think the proportions are a little off, the plinth could go back to around a quarter of the height of the storage niches, rather than virtually half as it is now.
I possibly would have had flatter cushions but I think once you have accessorised the corner unit and the walls above the seating, it will look great.

Isolatedizzy · 21/04/2021 19:22

I really like it! I wouldn't change it at all! Just dress it like your inspiration picture!

WussyMum · 21/04/2021 19:23

I think it will look really good when it's finished, *OP. Don't panic, it's just because it's not finished and looks a little makeshift right now. I bet when it's complete and accessorised it will look closer to what you wanted.

LizzieMacQueen · 21/04/2021 19:25

@Waitforwhat

Yes, @MNHQ to alert them.
museumum · 21/04/2021 19:32

The height should be decided based on adults and the table (if having one) not what it looks like.
The only thing I find a bit odd is it seems white with black storage boxes. Is the colour just primer? What colour will it be? And can the boxes not match? Or be natural/basket?
Really it all depends what sort of table you’re having (if any).
