King size or super king??

So we're moving to a bigger house later in the year and I'm trying to plan out some of the rooms. Our current house is pretty small and so we just have a standard double size bed in our master bedroom to allow for other furniture too.

I've been so excited at finally having the space to have a lovely big bed that I just assumed we'd get a super king bed, but now that I look at the dimensions and the space I'm wondering if a kingsize might be a better size for the room, and maybe a king is big enough? We're both average size if that makes a difference, or a little on the taller side.

What do most people have? Is a king size big enough? I'm so used to my double which feels small that I want to get it right!

The biggest that will fit comfortably in the room. You'll never regret it. We have a super king and love it.

HowLongTo2022 · 24/02/2021 10:04

We have a king sized bed and a super king sized duvet on it... one of my parents’ friends who owned a furniture shop recommended to me many moons ago going one size up on duvet to stop duvet pinching issues Grin

I don't have the wing span to change a super king without getting pissed off and yelling at the world.

We went from a King to a super king and it's amazing how much difference 30cm makes, it feels huge I can roll around as much as I like (fidgety sleeper!) and don't even touch DH lol. I very much recommend it, it would depend what else is in the room and the walking space around the bed as to whether I'd prioritise it over bedroom space, but it was worth the upgrade for us.

WhatAreWordsWorth · 24/02/2021 10:12

Our bedroom isn’t enormous, about 4 x 3.5m or something. Our super king doesn’t look out of place at all. Although we’re lucky to have a huge fitted wardrobe so our bedroom isn’t taken up with storage space.

Best thing we ever did. I’d never go back to a king size. But DH is 6’5 so a super king was on our priority list!

We have a superking. Lots if space, and perfect if you have small children who are likely to gatecrash

BabyElephant2 · 24/02/2021 10:16

Super king! Won’t ever go back to anything less

Soontobe60 · 24/02/2021 10:18

We had a super king in our previous house because the room was huge. We now have a king size as our room is smaller. TBH, I don't really notice the difference. There’s plenty of room in the bed, its easier to change the bedding and the bedding for a super king seemed to be much more expensive. That being said, if we did have enough room for a super king, I would have had another one.

I was like that when I had one - apparently its better to have 2 single duvets on a super king though.
Shmithecat2 · 24/02/2021 10:19

Superking! We're both tall (both over 6'), and our ds still gets in with us most nights horizontally, wtf? but tbh, even if it was just me, I'd still go superking.

frazzledasarock · 24/02/2021 10:19

We have a superking, It's a low ottoman bed, the fact that it's low down I think makes it not fill up the room as a higher bed would.

It's so comfy and the odd child who sneaks in is tolerable.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 24/02/2021 10:23

You’re buying all new bedding so go super king - if I didn’t have to think about the cost of new duvets, pillows, sheets I would upgrade in a heartbeat!

andadietcoke · 24/02/2021 10:25

Super king. It's the only way I can get any sleep if we're invaded by either of the girls.

@FourTeaFallOut I can change it by myself but only since I learnt the 'California roll' method via YouTube videos. It works really well.

BonnyandPoppy · 24/02/2021 10:32

I have this problem too. We have a superking at the moment which we bought in the last house where we had a larger room. Now we only just have enough room for the bedside tables and to walk sideways down the side. We had to change the radiator to be able to open the bedside table drawers. Our bed now needs changing for a new one and a king size would be better really for the space but I'm not sure I can go back to a king size after having had a superking for years.

muddledmidget · 24/02/2021 10:40

We have king size and its plenty big enough, without feeling like too much of a down grade if we have to share a double when we go away! It depends on whether you have children who will want to climb in with you, and also how tight your stairs are, we couldn't have got a super king mattress up the stairs, and the headboard took a chick out the ceiling

Grimbelina · 24/02/2021 10:43

Went from King to Superking and would never go back! The bed doesn't look much larger but you really do appreciate the space. Really wish we had gone to Superking when the children were tiny and kept getting in. We also have separate (king) duvets (no more fighting) so only bought new sheets.

ellenpartridge · 24/02/2021 10:52

Superking

riverseven · 24/02/2021 11:14

If kids generallly have 3 foot single beds, why would adults be comfortable with less than 3 foot each? We've got a smallish bedroom, but I'd rather use the floorspace for a large bed and know that I'm going to sleep better, which improves the rest of my life too.

HowLongTo2022 · 24/02/2021 11:15

Like the thought of two king sized duvets! I like a thicker tog then my DH so it will stop the “is it cold enough to popper on the extra 4tog to the 9tog to make 13tog” debate every autumn!

thelonggame · 24/02/2021 11:21

Superking, I love ours. I don't find it any harder to change the duvet on it that I do the King size in the spare room.

JackieWeaverFever · 24/02/2021 11:29

Had a king now super king with two duvets German style.
It is a game changer

HiPieInTheSky · 24/02/2021 11:31

Super King from me as well, if you prefer 2 double quilts with different togs it works great.

I dont find Super King covers much more expensive, just ordered 2 sets from Dusk and they were £8 and £10 more than King.

Going from a double to a SK will be a very nice change, go for it!

RandomUsernameHere · 24/02/2021 11:31

Superking if space allows! We have a continental kingsize which is in between UK king and superking sizes and I wouldn't mind it being slightly bigger. Enjoy your new bed!

muckypaws · 24/02/2021 11:32

The bigger the better, but just don't ever move house to a smaller bedroom. We currently have a massive bed jammed into a smallish bedroom and can hardly move!

Parkandride · 24/02/2021 11:34

Superking! There's hardly room for anything else in our room but I don't regret it
