A bloody village pub and they have decided to protect the poor ickle smokers from the rain.

Oh my heart bleeds for them.

I mean ffs, they are bloody killing themselves so what does it matter if they get bloody wet!!!!

So now theres the chance that they might build this and we'll have everyone and their mother puffing away outside

I might put in an application to build a gallows.

Well nbg, being in a similar position myself I have total sympathies with you. It is not just the smoke and the physical shelter outside nbg's doorway. There is also the noise - talking/laughing/swearing late at night and also when children are present.

Nbg · 23/10/2007 14:05

Thats it Bozza.
DD's bedroom is right above the front door and eventually either the new baby or ds will be in the other front bedroom.

Still cant see the plans yet but hopefully will get them emailed.

Why do you think a house next door to a pub was 'all you could afford'?
Possibly because of the inconveniences that come with living next door to a pub being reflected in the price?

And I assume you nor your DH drive? Filthy, selfish, lazy habit donchknow.

Nbg · 23/10/2007 15:12

JV, the house was actually reduced 3 times and was exceptionally higher in price when it was originally put on the market. It was also bought by two other people before us and sadly both their offers fell through but because the sellers needed to move quickly, they had no choice but to reduce the price. Plus we got another £5k knocked off because dh used to work for the woman who owned it.

But thanks for asking.

I dont/can't drive and we have 1 car which is used for a 5 mile drive to dh's work.
Again thanks for asking.

You are fooling yourself if you dont believe a house next door to a pub will have this reflected in the price. You cant have it both ways.

I'm amazed that someone so anti-smoking is not so anti- cars. Bit of a contradiction dont you think?

margoandjerry · 23/10/2007 15:18

Not read the whole thread but you have my sympathies. I live next to a Ha Ha bar (licence granted after I bought my flat...) and there are suddenly huge hoards of people gathered outside smoking which means noise outside till late (they don't have a licence for tables outside for this reason but can't stop people gathering outside to smoke). Also the street is filthy - carpeted with fag butts. Disgusting.

Why do smokers think fag butts are not litter? It's rank.

Definitely object on grounds of noise - if there's a shelter they'll be out there throughout the year. At least with our situation, they only stay outside until the weather turns.

bozza · 23/10/2007 15:18

This argument about knowing what you were getting when you bought the house annoys me. We have lived here for 7 years with no problems until this law was passed.

Fwiw, I dont think your objection to the council will hold much sway.
Unless your objection is to the physical aspect of the shelter (which it doesn't seem to be) then you are objecting to something that is perfectly legal - smokers congregating outside - and this will happen whether the shelter is there or not.

I think you have plenty of grounds actually.

The smokers usually take their drinks outside but as far as I know, the licence does not extend outside unless you have a licence to drink outside.

And you can object to the shelter on the grounds that it would encourage groups to gather where they otherwise wouldn't and in a residential area, this would lead to noise and disruption.

kittywitch · 23/10/2007 15:27

I wonder if they'll ever change the law so that places can chose to be smoking or non smoking. it would make so much more sense.

ScaremyVile · 23/10/2007 15:29

Do you think there are hoards of smokers sitting INSIDE the pub, chewing their fingernails to the bone, dying for a fag but staying put til a shelter is erected?
Nope! Anyone who is going to smoke will already be out there smoking.

some pubs here have shelters but they hardly seem to be used. one person at the most tbh. and i live in the coronary capital fo the world.

did you know its illegal to smoke in a bus shelter? if the shelter has 4 walls and a roof it will be illegal to smoke inside it

That's true naily, they had to take all of the glazing out of the shelters at the hospital where I work, so now the shelters are just a roof on metal stilts.

margoandjerry · 23/10/2007 15:37

But Scaremy, take it from one who lives with this every day...They do go back inside after end September when it starts raining and getting cold and miserable. A shelter allows them to stay out more and as soon as there's a shelter, there'll be calls for a patio heater and before you know it, it's a pub with legitimate outside space.

This is exactly what has happened to the bar next to me. First, tables outside despite no licence, then through "use and practice" they applied for a licence. Luckily it was rejected. The smokers are there through the summer but go back inside during winter.

nailpolish · 23/10/2007 15:41

i realy cant believe the hoo-ha about all of this down souht

here we just got on with it, everyone just accepted it and i have hardly seen anyone standing around pubs puffing away. maybe 2 or 3 at most and its not exactly a problem

you big girls blouses need shelters

NomDeBroomstick · 23/10/2007 15:43
