A bloody village pub and they have decided to protect the poor ickle smokers from the rain.

Oh my heart bleeds for them.

I mean ffs, they are bloody killing themselves so what does it matter if they get bloody wet!!!!

So now theres the chance that they might build this and we'll have everyone and their mother puffing away outside

I might put in an application to build a gallows.

You can't smoke less than 5 metres from a door - so if the shelter is within 5 metres of your frint door how are they going to smoke under the shelter?

Nbg · 21/10/2007 16:14

well at the minute they smoke in the doorways!

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 21/10/2007 16:27

Then perhpas a call to your council and ask them why this is allowed to happen. I wouldn't want the smell etc coming in my front door and the whole thing is a mockery your ending up with their second hand smoke - the whole idea was to stop passive smoking!

Nbg · 21/10/2007 16:31

well I wouldnt want to be seen whinging

mosschops30 · 21/10/2007 16:33

Cant smoke less than 5m from a door ...since when?

I'm loving all this, oh how happy all the non smokers were when they found out that smoking would be banned in enclosed spaces. Now all they do is moan about the smell in doorways/fag end on the floor/shelters being built/noise outside bars.

Another great example of the government cocking it all up, and everyone is still moaning, smokers and non smokers. If they'd have chosen smoking only establishments none of this would have been a problem and less people would be moaning

(and btw I am an ex-smoker of a few months)

Nbg · 21/10/2007 16:57

I havent got a problem with them smoking in the door ways.
What my problem is is that they will be building a bloody shelter right outside my front door!

NBG, the pub across from us has put up not one, but 2 marquees for smokers!

Fag butts in the garden are a PITA too.

Nbg · 21/10/2007 17:09

yep we have them thrown in our bin, stubbed out on the bin, in the yard.
Its great when ds tries to pick them up.

TheEvilDediderata · 21/10/2007 17:19

I quite agree with mosschops.

The smoking ban is bad legislation. It was bloody obvious to all but the politicians what the consequence of shoving the smokers outside would be.

Do you ever go in the pub, Nbq? If you had a customer relationship with the landlords, I'm sure they'd listen to your concerns.

Just a thought.

Nbg · 21/10/2007 17:33

We never go in but always acknowledge them and are friendly.

We're going to wait till tomorrow and look at the plans online and then if its bad we'll go and speak with them.
I dont want there to be a bad atmosphere between us because at the end of the day we are still neighbours.

NBG look on ski threads, posted my suitcase contents if you are quick!!

kittywitch · 21/10/2007 19:01

Alright, I apologise for saying you were whinging. I just get really hacked off with the 'holier than thou, you will all die' non smoking brigade .

Nbg · 21/10/2007 19:35

but doesnt it bother you at all kitty?

OP posts:
kittywitch · 21/10/2007 20:27

sorry, doesn't what bother me?

TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 00:59

I agree with Kitty's sentiment.

Smoker's might die five years before you do. Big deal. Less of a drain on the tax payer, surely?

Your OP was unpleasant and vindictive. You should perfectly well expect to receive some negative posts as a result.

'A bloody village pub' ... most of them going out of business because of your attitude.

'Poor ickle smokers' don't need protection from the rain.'

We'll go out in all weather, thanks, Ironically, we're the ones getting all the fresh air these days.

'I mean, ffs, they are bloody killing themselves so what does it matter if they get bloody wet!!!!'

It doesn't matter a jot. I'm happy to be wet.

Pubs are the heart of a community. Them and churches. I'm pleased that you have neither the desire or inclination to smoke or drink. It must be lovely for you.

Curiously frustrating, however, to ponder why the fuck you bought a house next door to a pub in the first place.

'Cos that would be heaven for me

kittywitch · 22/10/2007 09:15

{grin]
God I wish I wasn't so tired, then I could express myself better thanks evil one

Nbg · 22/10/2007 09:29

Well evil, we had no choice but to buy this house because we had to move because I was pregnant and dh had to work here and it was all we could afford.
The pub causes us no problems has never has in the whole year and a bit we have lived here.
Even before the smoking ban was in and we could smell smoke in our hallway, we never moaned and just kept thinking that when the ban came in, it would be ok and it has been.

As for your comment "its us that gets all the fresh air", dont make me laugh!
How the fuck can you be getting fresh air when your smoking???! Thats the biggest contradiction I have ever read!

I agree that the the pub and the churches are the heart of the community and that is very much the case here and I am also pleased that the couple that now own this pub are now making a success of it unlike previous owners.
They have done things with the pub that others never have and thats been the key to their success I believe but protecting smokers I think takes the biscuit IMO. Especially when there is already adequete sheltering.

Oh and the other comment about smokers dying 5 years before non smokers not so sure about that.
I have lost smoking family members through smoking and even if the 5 years thing is true, I would rather have them with me for them 5 years than lose them.

OP posts:
TheEvilDediderata · 22/10/2007 09:35

Nbq ... my fresh air comment was not meant to be taken seriously!

I have sympathy with your problem, just not the manner in which you expressed it. That said, I wish you luck. I think if you have a word with them, tell them how it is from your perspective, they may well back down without any unpleasantness.

Nbg · 22/10/2007 09:43

Twinkie1 · 22/10/2007 13:03

As Dp says - no one goes out smokes 20 fags and goes home to beat their wife!!

IYKWIM!!

It's a pub they are doing the same as a smoker by drinking really!

HotLove · 23/10/2007 09:18

thats what i think twink, you never hear of a judge saying "he was under the influence of nicotine"

Piggy · 23/10/2007 09:23

As I understand it the reason they have a smoking ban in workplaces is (quite rightly) to protect the workforce who may suffer serious consequences from inhaling second hand smoke. Surely you would have a good argument for saying to the council that you have concerns about your health as a result of this shelter. I would have thought they'd refuse permission for a shelter if it was going to mean that the people who live next door to the pub may suffer the effects of second hand smoke.

Fimbo · 23/10/2007 09:33

I am with you all the way NBG.

For what its worth, my local village council have banned smoking in the bus shelters because its deemed to be an enclosed space, I only read about it, because someone had tried to remove the no smoking stickers and it was reported in the paper.

MissInvisible · 23/10/2007 09:35

NBG, this may have already been said, but i would go and see you neighbours(pub owners) and tell them YOU will be against the shelter for blatently obvious reasons!, id rally round some of your nieghbours too!, tell them you dont see why they need this when they already have several covered areas and you do not want passive smoke constantly dripping in your doors windows, surly they must be able to see that is a reasonable objection!
