A bloody village pub and they have decided to protect the poor ickle smokers from the rain.

Oh my heart bleeds for them.

I mean ffs, they are bloody killing themselves so what does it matter if they get bloody wet!!!!

So now theres the chance that they might build this and we'll have everyone and their mother puffing away outside

I might put in an application to build a gallows.

why? just cause they smoke they should be hanged?

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 19/10/2007 11:48

You live right next door don't you? Will it be right under your windows?

niceglasses · 19/10/2007 11:51

I don't smoke but I actually find the smoking ban in pubs a bit mad - a non smoking area was fine by me. I know I might be in minority here, but just not one of the things I get worked up about.

A shelter wouldn't bother me at all. Why can't they have one? What harm?

Smoking, you know, its not morally WRONG.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 19/10/2007 11:52

Non-smoking areas were never sufficient unless the smokers were penned away in a separate room.

niceglasses · 19/10/2007 11:54

It was sufficient for me, but I accept not for most. So now we have a ban, fair 'nuff, but even thats not good enough. They shouldn't be made, you know, comfortable or anything......

Nbg · 19/10/2007 11:55

well why not hang yourself if your going to smoke?

Just as bad IMO.

Yep the pub is next door. Just the village local but what I dont get is that its in a conservation area.
We had to apply for permission to have double glazing!

LittleBellaLugosi · 19/10/2007 11:56

You can oppose their application on the grounds that it will interfere with your quiet enjoyment or whatever the phrase is.

Seriously, if there are going to be people puffing away outside, it is going to be disgusting in summer. And even in winter, the smell can come through. I'd phone the council if I were you.

Nbg · 19/10/2007 11:57

The shelter will be built so its next to our front door.

I think we will have to object. We have a lovely view out of our window over the village green and all we'll see is bloody smokers puffing away.

Carmenere · 19/10/2007 11:59

I understand, well kind of, we have a pub(not a very nice one tbh) at the end of our road and now there are usually lots of dodgy blokes outside which are frankly a bit uncomfortable for me when walking by as they are a bit leery.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 19/10/2007 11:59

I would certainly object to the plans under those circumstances. It's not on to have that right by your front door - can't they stick them out the back somewhere?

This is whats annoying.
At the back of the pub is a covered walkway already!
To the side there is a small beer garden where they have put up a marquee and then theres an open patio area.
So for those that do enjoy giving themselves cancer are covered from the elements.

niceglasses · 19/10/2007 12:01

Well of course you must object if you object iyswim.

I guess im just not outraged - i've never found smoking 'disgusting' unless I'm eating and someone is smoking.

Nbg · 19/10/2007 12:02

The only thing that puts me off is that they are a lovely couple that own the pub and the letter I have recieved says that they will know who has objected!

OP posts:
ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 19/10/2007 12:02

Make those points in your formal objection. There is already adequate provision.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 19/10/2007 12:03

Are they nice enough for you to go and chat bout your objections and ask why they're not sticking them out the back, out of sight/scent?

Mind you, it is surely bleedin' obvious that you'd object to having a smoking shelter outside your front door.

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 19/10/2007 12:05

I think that the pub trade as a whole is not doing very well and the smoking ban has affected pubs quite badly.

Village pubs are often the first to feel the pinch and they may be struggling to compete with other pubs in the area who have nice, warm, heated and covered smoking areas.

You say that there are plenty of places that people can have a cigarette, but if you were a smoker and wanted to go to a pub, would you want to sit in a marquee on your own, or would you rather go to another pub and sit in a nice outdoor "room" with a patio heater and ashtrays on the table where you can sit all night with your pint and your fags.

Perhaps they feel that they have to do this in order to keep their customers from going to a different pub with the facilities that they want.

Nbg · 19/10/2007 12:05

dont know but it must put people off objecting.
i should think the older residents will have something to say about it too.

I would object. When they all go out for a puff they will be chatting and making noise. Can it be noise pollution? Don't know. Especially in a quite village, the noise of chatiing late at night.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/10/2007 12:07

My neighbour is building a smoking shelter in his garden. It's a bloody eyesore.

Good luck with your objection nbg.

Actually I wonder if I could object to my neighbours construction
