1880's cottage Clifton in Bristol, horrific interior, would you bid on it?

Outside is so cute and I love the area!

How much do you reckon to fix it up?

Would you get involved with it?

Don't those houses back practically on to a cliff, too? I know the ones lower down JWR do, always thought it showed how desperately cramped Bristol is that people even built houses at the bottom of what must have been practically a gorge . I wonder if "wells" refers to sources of water by any chance...I would not like a big wet cliff up the back of my house!!

We have done a number of houses. Dh just commented' needs a little work'.

Sadly I'd run. Poor little house. Isn't it gorgeous though?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/11/2020 17:24

The former Almshouses next door are an assisted living centre. Might put some purchasers off

That would explain a lot; "assisted living" can mean many things, and one of them involves support for substance abusers

Which could be why the place looks like a crack den ...

Intriguing! I know that area very well, it's opposite QEH isn't it?
Road is pretty busy but a great area with the park nearby and harbour side staggering distance. Also some very nice local pubs nearby, so got a good community feel.
Houses in Bellevue (behind) regularly go for a million plus so i would price that house when done at around the 500-600k. If you could buy it and get it done for under that you're home free.
I would be up for the challenge but would probably only pay around 150 -200k for it.

oakleaffy · 02/11/2020 17:32

I know the cottage I think on Jacobs wells road.
Very cheap “ come and buy me” estimate
Builders will buy it, most likely called “ the headmistress house “

Ruthietuthie · 02/11/2020 17:33

It would sell so much better if they just put away some of the clutter and perhaps bought some new bed linen from Dunelm.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 02/11/2020 17:34

@candycane222 'wells' does mean water. But more in the sense that the water around Jacob's Wells was meant to be healing.
There's a secret passage at the pub opposite I think, if memory serves. Can't remember where it goes to though.

SabrinaThwaite · 02/11/2020 17:34

I've not lived near there for a good many years, but is the building next door still part of QEH (Boarding) School?

Assisted living for people with mental health needs. Which could be fine or could be challenging.

IMustardMitt · 02/11/2020 17:35

@MeringueCloud

It's a bit dated.

Oh dear, what human tragedy must have existed between those walls.
I went to an open day on a house in Bishopston a few years ago which wasn’t much better, it attracted huge interest ( was in the redlands school catchment). There was another perfectly nice house on sale a street away and its price was substantially lower than the price of the hovel+ necessary renovations. I found that puzzling, but at the time put it down to the popularity of home renovations TV programmes

katy1213 · 02/11/2020 17:37

Offer £10,000 and see if they're desperate to get it off their hands.

katy1213 · 02/11/2020 17:37

In fact, houses like this have been known to go for £1.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 02/11/2020 17:38

Knowing what the traffic is like there I wouldn’t be interested at any price

oakleaffy · 02/11/2020 17:38

Looks from what I remember from agents blurb that it hasn’t been lived in for decades.
Very busy road outside, but noise from neighbours would have to be assessed.
Any shrieking would be a no no for me.

candycane222 · 02/11/2020 17:39

Couldn't be bothered to put the loo seat down though. That'll definitely put people off....
They'd have had to touch it though! Envy Envy Envy

JellyFishSquish · 02/11/2020 17:41

A no from me.

When I win the Euromillions I'm going to start an organisation (I think calling it a business will be a stretch) buying derelict historic buildings that are beyond economic repair and repairing them (at a loss) so that they can be lived in again by people who will appreciate them. Going by whatever has gone so very wrong in the roof I think this would be an excellent candidate for my first money eating project.

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2020 17:49

It makes my eyes go weird looking at it from the outside. All those non- horizontal and vertical lines.

Also note the helpful bonus Sold with vacant possession.

You don't say.

According to this page: www.zoopla.co.uk/property/77-jacobs-wells-road/clifton/bristol/bs8-1dj/2688577 it would be worth in the region of 570,000 with a 2 bed config.

That's one for a developer. Other than the fact there's no graffiti, it looks like it's been squatted.

Gingernaut · 02/11/2020 18:02

If I was a property developer with the right contacts, this would be an amazing investment.

Directly opposite a place of work, near a college, where students, doctors and nurses would need to be close for lessons, shifts and on call work and so close to the city centre you don't need a bus to get there.

However, as a potential 'forever home', I'd turn it down. Unless you could look at it dispassionately, it will drive you nuts.
