Odd question about my kitchen. Pics included

I have a stunning new kitchen. I love it but it’s too much like a showroom. Other than leaving it untidy or grubby how can I make it less showroom like? You see what I mean about an odd question!

I love it and now want a whole house tour Grin

AnneRIPanki · 29/10/2020 18:23

Looking towards the window , it does look spartan . Perhaps something of interest or colour in that direction ?

RoSEbuds6 · 29/10/2020 18:45

How about a bowl of pine cones, gourds, or something natural, rough and earthy, if not everything it a bit too shiny and twinkly...

Me too, please! I'd love to see what's behind the double doors 😍

Well I disagree with everyone else on this thread. You obviously like the shiny blingy designed look so I’d go for it more not less.

I think you are watering it down with the cutesy touches, such as the fairy lights, lots of tiny pictures , Scandinavia style table and chairs and fake flowers .

I’d remove a lot of the small objects - the tiny pictures and calendar at the window , all the small photos, the traditional shape lamp and vase on mantle piece, the mirror, the dotted cushions on bar stool , the wine on top of units.

Most of your objects and furniture are very nice but they Don’t work together with your kitchen style.

I’d replace with fewer and much larger simpler things with a more striking design.

A larger mirror over fireplace. Perhaps one large interestingly shaped modern object There too.

More dramatic table and chairs - either very old or very modern.

One huge architectural foliage plant.

Your bar stools are great but they need a simple cushion. The blinds are good.

The Ikea pendants need to go . You need a much simpler bold design and hung in the correct place ie over island not to each side of it. This can easily be done with a ceiling hook.

Your under cabinet lights seem dazzling, but that might just be the photo. If not, consider a different bulb or a baffle.

Just my opinion. I think your units and worktop are fab and Deserve to be complemented not detracted from.

Heronwatcher · 29/10/2020 22:39

I agree that it needs a different texture. Could you replace the roller blinds at the beautiful window with some fabric Roman blinds with a bit of colour? Or maybe change the chairs for something a bit softer?

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 29/10/2020 22:49

It really doesn’t matter what kitchen is in your house, it’s the property version of a supermodel who would look good in a bin bag, put that kitchen in an ordinary house and I don’t think people would be as impressed, it’s the features of your house that are lovely not the kitchen (though of course it is very nice) and I think SOOLA is right, your house is dramatic, embrace that don’t try to dial it down.

Solar, thanks for your input. One thing.......the tiny pictures are family photos of the past nearly 100 years......love them.

Your kitchen is stunning @Indecisiveragazza. I love the windows but think some lovely roman blinds would soften the look of the kitchen, roller blinds are very clinical and cheapen it IMO.

usernamewastaken · 29/10/2020 23:43

Lovely. Those white light pendants above the hob will be full of grease within a few months, that'll take the 'shine' off!

Yup. Put them in another room. You have a big house.

I love your table and chairs too. I have similar ones. But they don’t work with your kitchen.

tldr · 30/10/2020 01:47

It’s beautiful and I have a question! How long is your island and is there enough room to do things like plate food up next to the hob? I’m at the planning stage and my island looks similar (on paper) but I’m concerned that even though it’s huge, it’s not huge enough!

Also, to answer your question: plants.

Indecisiveragazza · 30/10/2020 08:31

TLDR, I’ll get back to you with the exact size of the island. It’s an interesting question. Though huge, I would say there is just enough room for plating up. The previous island I had the sink was on the other side which gave more room along the side of the hob. There are obvious advantages to having the sink where it is now though and I think they outweigh there being a bit less space next to the hob. The pull out bins are at the end of the island next to the sink.
Soola, I know what you mean about the positioning of the pendant lights. The old island was parallel to the window. I decided to leave that positioning and see how it looked. Perhaps it does look a bit odd. We might change that, though I’ve become used to them. One is directly above the hob and the other above a big working space.
Perhaps, it doesn’t look it in the photo but the mirror over the fireplace is huge. All interesting points, thanks.
