Would you buy a house you loved it BUT only had one bathroom?

And no possibility of extending to add another?

Have found a beautiful house that ticks most of my "want" boxes and is really reasonably priced. BUT only one bathroom in the whole house!

What if two people need a poo at the same time?! Shock Would this put you off?

@DoTheNextRightThing

My house only has one toilet. I've only ever lived in houses with one toilet. It's really not that difficult.
It really is for some people, but you clearly can't see beyond your family's perfect digestive systems.

It's really not that difficult Hmm

Mmmmdanone · 11/09/2020 08:23

I wouldn't. I had 1 bathroom until we got the attic turned into an en suite. Mornings were a nightmare before- everyone trying too use toilet and brush teeth etc.

Parky04 · 11/09/2020 08:25

We are a family of 4 living in a semi detached with one bathroom for 21 years. No problems at all. Before having a bath, the person just checks if anyone needs the toilet.

EnglishRain · 11/09/2020 08:39

I agree with others, my first thought was that the bathroom is huge! I'd pinch some of that for a shower and loo en-suite in bedroom two.

My bathroom is 9'8 x 7'3 and I have loo, sink, separate shower and free standing bath. And I've got a chimney breast taking a chunk out of the middle of it.

JoJoSM2 · 11/09/2020 10:56

I agree that the bathroom could be split into two. An ensuite wet room would only take up a tiny bit of space as in the attached example.

I'd rather have a separate full sized shower cubicle and separate bath, and two sinks, in one good sized bathroom with a big window which can be opened (this is what we have) than two pokey, unsatisfactory little bathrooms with shower over the bath and no windows in one of them. People have different priorities but I hate showers over baths more than I hate waiting two minutes to use the toilet occasionally!

KoalasandRabbit · 11/09/2020 11:14

We've only ever had 1 bathroom before this house and managed fine for 4 of us so wouldn't bother me. Even with 2 now, 1 is the cats. If I was bothered you don't need a lot of space to put an extra toilet and sink in though and definitely lots of space in that house and would just add it.

IsabellaMozzarella · 11/09/2020 11:46

Nope I wouldn't, what would you do if you all got d&v??!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 11/09/2020 13:12

IsabellaMozzarella there are only two of them! Are you saying that just in case of D&V bugs households should have one bathroom per person?

Theradioison · 11/09/2020 13:51

Nope I wouldn't, what would you do if you all got d&v??!

So you need a house with a loo for each person just in case? 🤔

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/09/2020 13:54

There's only two of you living there? Confused From your op I thought there'd be at least 10 of you. Ridiculous thread.

woodlandwalker · 11/09/2020 13:57

I've never lived in a house with two bathrooms. I do now live in a house with a second downstairs loo which was on my wish list when I last moved. It is easier if the toilet is outside the bathroom as older houses tend to be.
It's fashionable now to knock down the adjoining wall to make a bigger bathroom (much like making open plan living downstairs) which I think is mad. I know they have done this in my last house.

PaternosterLoft · 11/09/2020 13:58

I'd either flip the stairs so you could get a small downstairs loo, and/or partition that massive bathroom upstairs. You could get a separate loo with sink easy.

friendlycat · 11/09/2020 14:09

With proper guidance I think you have two options. Either split the bathroom as everyone else has suggested or you have three downstairs reception rooms and you could get a small loo and sink downstairs by taking a bit of space from one of those rooms.

CountFosco · 11/09/2020 14:18

It's not like anyone will use the bath and shower at the same time when they're in the same room, together.

My kids do this all the time, 7yo in the bath, 10yo in the shower (13yo in the shower in the other bathroom).

I only lived in student flats with 1 toilet so for 5 years of my whole life and I'm Gen X.

Waitingfirgodot · 11/09/2020 18:32

We lived in a house with only one toilet until our children were 9, 8 and 5. It was fine - a little stressful in the mornings but fine. Our new house has as many toilets as people (it had more when we moved on - we removed one to make a bigger utility room) but there were lots of things that we would have prioritised over number of toilets.

keziahthecat · 11/09/2020 18:34

I've never lived in a house with more than one toilet. It's never been a problem. However we are currently building an extension which will include a downstairs toilet so maybe there will be no going back.

Not really.

Only me and DH and we need more than 1 bathroom. It's a deal breaker for us, house hunting wise.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/09/2020 19:12

Yes. Total nonsense. There are two of us and one toilet! How will we cope?!
The angst 😂😂

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/09/2020 19:14

Just stop the synchronised shitting, Yellow. Millions manage quite well 🤷🏻‍♀️

toobusytothink · 11/09/2020 19:16

DH has Crohn's (not his fault at all) so inevitably when I need to go, he's in there!

Honestly the constant bathroom-is-not-available is just horrible. Can't wait to move, new house has 3 toilets! I could jump for joy!

kittenpeak · 11/09/2020 19:21

It probably would put me off but only because I'd be worried about selling it on. Annoying there is only 1 (I personally wouldn't like this) but if you can live with it then great, but potential buyers
Might not like it when you come to sell. If you're certain you can't extend / add a downstairs WC / add an en-suite then others might be put off

LittleBearPad · 11/09/2020 19:22

@MileyWiley

Probably one of the most entitled posts I have ever seen. Troll perhaps?
Oh don’t be silly.

OP split the bathroom in two. You could certainly get a loo/sink even if you wanted to keep a separate bath shower in the main bedroom. But an over bath shower is fine if the shower’s decent.
