Would you buy a house you loved it BUT only had one bathroom?

And no possibility of extending to add another?

Have found a beautiful house that ticks most of my "want" boxes and is really reasonably priced. BUT only one bathroom in the whole house!

What if two people need a poo at the same time?! Shock Would this put you off?

What sort of house is it? Surely there's some way you could add another loo?

NatalieH2220 · 10/09/2020 21:52

No, I couldn't go back to one bathroom now. Would definitely put me off.

Fizzingsherbert · 10/09/2020 21:52

I didn't realise 1 loo was such a deal breaker!! We are a family of 4 with one bathroom and it's fine, children are primary school age, not sure if that makes a difference. We are house hunting now and it hadn't even occurred to me to only look at houses with more than one bathroom!

PolarBearStrength · 10/09/2020 21:54

It wouldn’t even occur to me that we would need more than one bathroom or toilet tbh. If we had a family of 8 it might be an issue but for a normal size family, one bathroom is fine.

Bunnybigears · 10/09/2020 21:57

We have 4 people, 2 adults a teenager and a 10 year old, we have 1 bathroom and its downstairs we have never had an issue, sometimes you have to do the 'I need a wee dance in the kitchen while you wait for someone to finish but thats just life. I have never lived-in a house with more than one toilet.

HowFastIsTooFast · 10/09/2020 21:58

36 and never lived in a house with more than one bathroom/toilet. Now reading this thread and wondering how on Earth I've managed this long.

Dawnlassie · 10/09/2020 21:58

First world problems.

yearinyearout · 10/09/2020 22:02

Absolutely not.

Shedpaint · 10/09/2020 22:02

Nope would not consider it

But I’d def think creatively about how you could add one before discounting

eb2020 · 10/09/2020 22:04

Not a chance. I recently declined on a property because there was only one bathroom. I've compromised in the passed and regretted it. Life is too short to be shitting in the same toilet as everyone else!

ButterflyRuns · 10/09/2020 22:06

I lived in houses with just one growing up and honestly I'd want at least two loos (as in a bathroom and a toilet) in a house I was going to buy.

pallisers · 10/09/2020 22:06

No. I would not consider it. When we are all home, there are 5 of us. But even if it was just dh and me, I'd want a second loo at the least.

ChicCroissant · 10/09/2020 22:07

I'm in my mid-fifties now and as a child, the houses I lived in had toilets that were separate to the bathrooms - only one, though.

As an adult, all our houses have had more than one toilet and it is handy although I probably didn't think it would be until we had the option.

QueSera · 10/09/2020 22:09

Could you put one under the stairs? Cut into a bedroom to make an en suite? Etc?

Krazynights34 · 10/09/2020 22:10

Turn a small bedroom into a bathroom? Does it not have a garden to extend into? Take part of two bedrooms to add a small shower room with toilet?

JaJaDingDong · 10/09/2020 22:10

Until about 20 years ago very few houses had more than 1 bathroom/toilet.
You'll manage fine.

Which isn't to say it's not nice to have more than one, but you'll be fine with one.

AuntieMarys · 10/09/2020 22:10

Definitely not. There are 2 of us and we have 3 bathrooms and toilets .

ShyTown · 10/09/2020 22:12

No I wouldn’t want one loo but surely you can add another somewhere?

RedSoloCup · 10/09/2020 22:18

We are 5, me DH, 3Dds 10-15 and one works okay for us, I'd like more but not a major issue ever!

waterandlemonjuice · 10/09/2020 22:19

No

Pixxie7 · 10/09/2020 22:21

Why does everyone now need 2 bathrooms, people have and continue to live with one bathroom for centuries.

joeysapple · 10/09/2020 22:22

Ooh thanks for all replies. Here is the floor plan. There is only one cupboard in the whole house so wouldn't want to sacrifice it to make a loo and there is nowhere else it could reasonably go. Bedrooms are small so would be tough to make an en-suite from one I think?

But I absolutely LOVE the house. I've driven past it for years and thought how lovely it is, and now it's on the market and it's gorgeous inside too.

I come from a family of six, and we managed with one bathroom most of the time we all lived together. Odd, I know.

Mind you, I did once pee on my sister's bun. To be fair, she'd left it on the stairs, so I'm not sure what else she could have expected, really.

ThunderSkies · 10/09/2020 22:25

You could eventually add a toilet in the pantry area or under the stairs?

RevolutionRadio · 10/09/2020 22:25

Yes we did exactly that but there is only 2 of us. We got a better area for less money by buying an older house with 1 bathroom.

I don't think there's any logical way to extend our house to get an extra w/c. I'd then be worried about taking space from the garden.

My dh tells me when he's going to the toilet so I can go in first, otherwise I'd be waiting a long time for him to come back out again.
