Would you buy a house you loved it BUT only had one bathroom?

And no possibility of extending to add another?

Have found a beautiful house that ticks most of my "want" boxes and is really reasonably priced. BUT only one bathroom in the whole house!

What if two people need a poo at the same time?! Shock Would this put you off?

You are being daft if it's your dream house otherwise. I think you'll find that as an adult, you can probably bear the odd five minute wait.

HazelWong · 11/09/2020 05:35

I have never lived in a house with only one bathroom. Of course, you can cope but it wasn't what we wanted. My DH spends 30 mins showering and shaving! If it were only 5 minutes it might be different

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/09/2020 06:08

Those upstairs rooms are a really good size. You could make that place 4 bed with 4 ensuites if you wanted (change size one window in bathroom and move door in bed 2). Ok you’d have one small bedroom if you really want a bath and I’m not suggesting you should do this. My point is ensuites can take up a tiny amount of space. Plus you have 2 obvious options previously discussed downstairs. Lots of potential if you get at the right price....

Katyy · 11/09/2020 06:20

I couldn’t love a house with just one toilet. There’s only me and dh and we have three in a two bed house.

Cardent · 11/09/2020 06:23

Yes. I live in a house with only one bathroom. 3 adults.

It’s fine, its always been fine.

CleanAndPaidFor · 11/09/2020 06:33

There are three reception room downstairs. Is there budget to to sacrifice the dining room by knocking it into the kitchen and making a utility room and downstairs loo?

sanityisamyth · 11/09/2020 06:34

That bathroom seems quite large. Could you not split it to make 2 en-suites?

Okbutnotgreat · 11/09/2020 06:51

I’ll would absolutely look at splitting the bathroom. A bath with a shower over is no great sacrifice compared to only having one toilet in the whole house. We used to have that and I was so pleased when we moved to a 3 bathroom house.

daisypond · 11/09/2020 06:57

Yes. I live in a house where there is only one bathroom, and no separate loo. There’s five of us. It’s fine.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 11/09/2020 07:01

Split the bathroom (the toilet section can be tiny with a tiny tiny sink). Or put another toilet/tiny sink in the pantry off the kitchen (more expensive but gives us downstairs toilet)?

LionLily · 11/09/2020 07:05

That's a large bathroom, with two external walls and water/drainage already available on three sides. There doesn't seem to be any major issue to knocking through to the adjacent bedroom (eg boiler, stair void). I don't think it would be a massive task to convert to an en-suite and 'family' bathroom, probably not too budget busting either.

Pobblebonk · 11/09/2020 07:18

Our neighbours put a porch onto the front of their house which also enabled them to put a downstairs loo in. Is that a possibility?

Toontown · 11/09/2020 07:24

We had 1 loo until last year in a house of 6, we've managed 15 years of it. Last year we split our bathroom into the world's smallest bathroom and an extra loo. It has been useful as I now can have a bath with out a child pooing in the corner.Grin

Motherof3Dragons · 11/09/2020 07:26

We bought a house with one bathroom, but we plan to extend and build a shower room next year. We also have an old loo in the garden shed.
We still use a „potty“ for our youngest child, because he wouldn’t be able to wait if the only toilet in the house was „occupied“.
Moreover the kids- bedrooms have sinks, which avoids an early morning mayhem in the bathroom.
I wouldn’t have bought this house without the extra sinks, the extra loo, or a possibility to extend, even though we absolutely loved this house otherwise.

frumpety · 11/09/2020 07:28

Looking at the floor plans , you can add an additional toilet next to the bathroom by taking a bit of bedroom 2 , just a thin strip and change where the entrance door to the bedroom is. Not sure what the distance is from the chimney stack to the dividing wall to the bathroom is, but it looks doable.

Jent13c · 11/09/2020 07:46

Plenty of room to have 2 good size bathrooms without compromising on bedroom space there and not a whole lot needs moving. Excuse the terrible drawings...I'm no architect but the bath has a shower above it

Ginfordinner · 11/09/2020 07:52

Unfortunately a couple of us have bowel issues, so only one loo is a deal breakerfor my family. Being told that one loo between 126 people isn't very helpful Hmm

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 11/09/2020 07:54

No, just no way. It would never be a dream house with only one bathroom.

RingtheBells · 11/09/2020 07:55

I would make the family room smaller and have a small cloakroom off the hall.

RingtheBells · 11/09/2020 07:57

Or this.
winetime89 · 11/09/2020 08:00

We're a family of four with one loo, never causes us any problems tbh, kids are only young though maybe itl be different once there teenagers

Porridgeoat · 11/09/2020 08:04

Massive bathroom with two windows. I’d add an en-suite with walk in shower to bedroom.

Angel2702 · 11/09/2020 08:08

I’ve never lived in a house with more than one bathroom. We have a downstairs bathroom only shared between 5 of us and it’s never been a problem.

DoTheNextRightThing · 11/09/2020 08:09

My house only has one toilet. I've only ever lived in houses with one toilet. It's really not that difficult.

Porridgeoat · 11/09/2020 08:12

Or add the en-suite to a different bedroom ...
