Would you buy a house you loved it BUT only had one bathroom?

And no possibility of extending to add another?

Have found a beautiful house that ticks most of my "want" boxes and is really reasonably priced. BUT only one bathroom in the whole house!

What if two people need a poo at the same time?! Shock Would this put you off?

@Ginfordinner

I feel a Four Yorkshiremen skecth coming on.

Yes, we used to have outside privies and no bathrooms, then just one inside toilet. It doesn't mean that life was better and less uncomfortable for people with bowel/bladder issues.

But many many people still live in houses with only one toilet. It’s not remotely unusual.

I’ve never lived in a house with more than one except when I was in a student flat.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 10/09/2020 22:44

This is a millennial thing. Growing up in a family of five we had one bathroom .. never thought we were deprived.. would never in a million years of wanted to give up our gamily home for want of another loo..!so fucking precious..

nildesparandum · 10/09/2020 22:45

Well I never known what it is like to have more than one loo guess what I have survived
A few years ago I shared my house with six family members and somehow we managed ,and this number included two young children.
The more loos you have the more you have to keep clean.
Just my opinion, if you must have more than one toilet go ahead and get one but it is not the end of the world.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/09/2020 22:47

This is a millennial thing.

No. I'm 47 and I've never lived in a home with only one bathroom.

BackforGood · 10/09/2020 22:55

You have 3 good sized Reception rooms there!
If you want a proper dining room, I'd make the 'Family room' into the dining room, and take a bit f space off what is now labelled the dining room to create a downstairs toilet and make that room into more of a study or music room or play room or sewing room. You'll still have a lounge and dining room in addition to whatever that room becomes.

If I had more people living there, you could also divide up the bathroom, but it doesn't seem worth it when there are only two people in the house, whereas a downstairs toilet is always an asset.

So, to answer your question - in your circumstances, yes, I would buy it.
For me with 5 people living here, then no, I wouldn't - as I can afford to buy a house that will suit my needs better. Obviously, if money were tighter, then you make more compromises btween what you would like and what you need.

bert3400 · 10/09/2020 22:59

Would be a deal breaker for me . Also have to think of when you come to sell, will people buy if only one toilet ...I wouldn't

NotABeliever · 10/09/2020 23:12

That bathroom is massive and it has dual aspect windows so it would be very easy to get two good sized bathrooms out if it.

GreenTiles22 · 10/09/2020 23:17

Looking at your floor plan, either out a downstairs toilet under the stairs, or your bathroom is big so remodel the space and create a separate toilet. Or even a small en-suite with a shower one end and toilet the other. It only has to be 1metre in width with a sliding door. Could take up a small space but huge benefit!

Aurea · 10/09/2020 23:20

Small toilet and basin under the stairs. You can normally fit this in.

AlwaysLatte · 10/09/2020 23:23

Nope! Are you sure there's nowhere to put one in? My sister has a tiny WC under the stairs!

AlwaysLatte · 10/09/2020 23:28

If I loved the house and it were just the two of us I would sacrifice bedroom 3 and make a really nice en-suite for bedroom 1. Ideally also try to put in a WC downstairs if possible.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 10/09/2020 23:32

We grew up perfectly happily with 7 people in a house with one bathroom Smile Four people now with only one, though I would definitely like to squeeze another loo in!

MJMG2015 · 10/09/2020 23:32

Plenty of room to resign the bathroom to make an en suite!!!

There are options for a loo downstairs too,

If you live the house & it's a good price, I wouldn't let putting an en-suite in stop me buying it!!

RoseMartha · 10/09/2020 23:35

I have only lived in places with one loo too. Perfectly normal

Ariela · 10/09/2020 23:41

I would re-jig the bathroom and take part of it and part of Bed 2 to create an ensuite.

Downstairs, I would consider an extension along the back to allow space for utility and downstairs loo and a garden room, various ways you could organise this.

Murinae · 10/09/2020 23:57

No I wouldn’t. Won’t even rent one as a holiday cottage. Husband spends hours sat in there.

PickAChew · 11/09/2020 00:05

That bathroom is huge. You could easily divide it and make the side the shower is on into an en-suite for bedroom 2. It's not like anyone will use the bath and shower at the same time when they're in the same room, together.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 11/09/2020 01:08

@Tatiannatomasina

Can you divide the house bathroom and make an en suite with access from bedroom 2?
That was my thought as well, the bathroom is relatively spacious so a small en-suite could be created for bedroom 2.
DramaAlpaca · 11/09/2020 01:14

I wouldn't even view a house with only one loo.

Not after the trip DH and I took to Egypt, when we both came back with a nasty case of Pharaoh's Revenge.

TheHighestSardine · 11/09/2020 02:04

The only place I've ever lived with more than one loo was first year university accomodation. For two people? Not a real problem unless someone has IBS or similar.

Sunshineboo · 11/09/2020 02:08

we have bought a house we love with only one loo. it is the only thing i don’t love about the house, but the rest of it makes up for it.

mysteryfairy · 11/09/2020 02:18

Make some sort of en-suite pinching room from the bathroom and bedroom 2?

Nyclair · 11/09/2020 04:47

Yes, deal breaker for me. Need at least 2 toilets, if not 2 full bathrooms

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 11/09/2020 05:15

I would, particularly if there’s only two of you. What would be a deal-breaker for me would be a saniflo second loo. Don’t get tempted to put one of these in. I’d rather cross my legs than deal with a saniflo toilet.

HaggyMaggie · 11/09/2020 05:18

I also immediately thought of taking some off bedroom 2
