How many loos would you expect in a 5 bedroom house?

We’ve got an en-suite, a family bathroom with loo and a loo with no basin next to that.

The loo with no basin is getting removed to putin new hot water cylinder.

Thinking about putting one in downstairs but it won’t be particularly easy as no headroom under the stairs for one so will have to make space elsewhere. Probably mean a smaller utility.

Downstairs pool essential for families, elderly or even if you are in the garden. Who wants children to traipse upstairs from the garden??

Smaller utility or combined, personally I don't like houses with loo and utility combined but some people have it.

No point having a loo and no basin, so yes, pop in your boiler. 2 bathrooms upstairs is fine BUT you could ideally do with a downstairs loo with basin!!

We have three, one downstairs, family bathroom and en suite.
Works for us.

AriettyHomily · 07/08/2020 08:24

3 minimum

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/08/2020 08:25

I think even if you only have one upstairs you do need one downstairs.

We have too many though. Our house used to be six bed but we've changed one bedroom into a dressing room as part of a master suite so its now 5 bed. We have six loos - family bathroom, three en suite bedrooms, a downstairs loo off the hallway and then another in the shower room which serves the garden (which is actually really handy if you garden a lot). Its way too many loos to clean.

I agree, who buys a house without a pool... Or puts one upstairs?GrinGrinGrin

Our best downstairs toilet was just inside the backdoor. Very helpful with our extremely muddy garden

NeverTwerkNaked · 07/08/2020 08:26

We have a 5 bed and have one downstairs and 2 upstairs it feels about right I wouldn't want any more!

We've got 5 bedrooms and when renovation is done we'll have a downstairs toilet, kids bathroom on the middle floor and our bathroom on top floor. We're removing the en suite and repurposing it. Don't like en suite bathroom as I do t want to be lying in bed listening to DH's toilet noises in the morning!

MsSquiz · 07/08/2020 08:43

We have a 5 bed house and currently have 2 en suites, a family bathroom & downstairs loo. Originally there was another en suite but we took it out to make the family bathroom bigger.

In our old 5 bed, every bedroom had an en suite, but no family bathroom and a downstairs toilet

I would expect at least 3 for a 5 bed - downstairs loo, family bathroom and en suite to the master

LadyCatStark · 07/08/2020 08:43

3 minimum. We have 4 but we only have one child so I always wonder how people with more than one child decide who gets the second on suite? Our friends have 6 😵.

itsaratrap · 07/08/2020 08:44

At least 3, with 1 downstairs.

BlackberrySky · 07/08/2020 08:47

It depends on what comparable houses are like in your area. Make sure you have at least that number.

Ifailed · 07/08/2020 08:48

Every room in the house should have an en suite, including one halfway up the stairs, just in case.

Candleabra · 07/08/2020 08:49

3 at least (one downstairs). Most new builds round here have four, but they're 3 storeys.
I'd want at least one on each floor, plus en suite to master bedroom.

Techway · 07/08/2020 08:49

@Aroundtheworldin80moves, Ha..pool/loo, obviously have to have both 😃

Sexnotgender · 07/08/2020 08:49

3 would be useful. I’ve got a large 4 bed and when we had people stay our 2 toilets weren’t enough. One shower wasn’t enough either, was a complete pain.

Dogsgowoofwoof · 07/08/2020 08:49
  1. One bathroom and a downstairs loo. I don’t want to have to clean anymore than 2.
mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 07/08/2020 08:54

We have four in our five bed. Used to be three (one downstairs, one family and one en-suite), but we added an extension so now two biggest bedrooms are en-suite. I would definitely expect a downstairs loo in a 5 bed.

Appuskidu · 07/08/2020 08:54

We have three which has always seemed to be enough for all of us.

MurderousChicken · 07/08/2020 08:54

3 at least - downstairs loo, family bathroom and en-suite. We have a 5 bed and have 4 toilets.

flapjackfairy · 07/08/2020 08:55

We have 5 beds ( one downstairs ). We have a wet room (with shower ) down stairs and a Family bathroom upstairs with bath and shower. Two loos are plenty for us .

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 07/08/2020 08:59

3

Okbutnotgreat · 07/08/2020 09:02

Minimum 3 and definitely one downstairs.

thegreylady · 07/08/2020 09:02

I think a family house needs a downstairs loo. Dd converted box room to en suite to master bedroom. They have a family bathroom upstairs and a loo off the utility room downstairs. It is a godsend when kids are playing in the garden, especially if they have friends round.
