How many loos would you expect in a 5 bedroom house?

We’ve got an en-suite, a family bathroom with loo and a loo with no basin next to that.

The loo with no basin is getting removed to putin new hot water cylinder.

Thinking about putting one in downstairs but it won’t be particularly easy as no headroom under the stairs for one so will have to make space elsewhere. Probably mean a smaller utility.

I have a 5 bed house, one downstairs loo, family bathroom with shower cubicle, bath, loo etc, en suite with double shower enc, loo etc. Works well for my family.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/08/2020 18:29

There seems to be a fad now for every bedroom to have an en-suite with shower, which is just bonkers

I'm not sure its a fad, my house was built in 1949

Reluctantcavedweller · 07/08/2020 18:30

At least 3. Downstairs toilet, main bathroom and en suite.

Shmithecat2 · 07/08/2020 18:32

Three. One in the ensuite, one in the family bathroom and one downstairs.

popcorndiva · 07/08/2020 18:33

I wouldn't buy a house now which doesn't have a toilet downstairs

We have a 5 bed and we have one downstairs, 2 ensuite then main bathroom

BillywilliamV · 07/08/2020 18:36

We have two ensuites with shower, a family bathroom and a downstairs loo. One of the ensuites is used for hamsters though!

RoseMartha · 07/08/2020 18:37

At least a family bathroom and downstairs loo.

huuunderickssss · 07/08/2020 18:43

3-5... I have a 4 bed with 4 Looos / bathrooms

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 07/08/2020 18:48

We have downstairs loo (hideous) main bathroom loo and loo in the lift conversion (never used.) two would be enough I think.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 07/08/2020 18:48

I don't know why but I really feel weird about downstairs loos.

VinylDetective · 07/08/2020 19:16

@iftherewereahorseyinthehouse

I don't know why but I really feel weird about downstairs loos.
Why? Who wants to go trotting upstairs all day? Let alone send visitors up there?
PickAChew · 07/08/2020 19:21

@Hardbackwriter

I'd want a downstairs loo but I absolutely hate the current mania for putting in endless en suites - unless the bedrooms are massive it just ends up with a poky bedroom and then a shit poky little bathroom. When we were looking at new houses recently so many of them had given up loads of useful space to put in multiple en suites, all of which would have felt like showering in a coffin.
A house near me has recently been renovated and they put an en suite in every bedroom. Consequently, despite it being a decent sized 4 bed house, none of the rooms has space for anything bigger than a normal double bed.
Nothingoriginalhere · 07/08/2020 19:34

A minimum of 3, preferably 4.
we have a 4 bed house with 4 loos but with 3 teenagers in it, plus DH and me you need all the loos and showers you can get.
We have downstairs loo, main bathroom and 2 ensuites.

What proportion of houses built in 1949 had en-suite bathrooms for every bedroom?

At a guess, none. They’d be a later addition I imagine.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2020 19:44

1 downstairs with wash hand basin.
1 upstairs in family bathroom.
Maybe another 1 upstairs in an ensuite.

So 2, pref 3.

But what do I know? I live in a 3 bed Victorian terrace with 1 loo in family bathroom and 1 outside! Probably in a significant minority.

TalbotAMan · 07/08/2020 19:47

4+

We have a 4/5 bedroom house with 2 en-suites for two of the bedrooms (Master and Guest which are a bit interchangeable depending on how we feel), a Jack-and-Jill for the other two (DDs') and a family/guest one. The 5th is usually an office but has an IKEA daybed in for when we have lots of visitors.

TalbotAMan · 07/08/2020 19:49

Oh and it's a bungalow with a loft conversion (!) so three out of the four are downstairs.

Lougle · 07/08/2020 19:49

Definitely 3. We have 5 of us in a 3-bed, toilet downstairs and bathroom upstairs. 3 girls going to bed in the evening - it can be stressful.

Comefromaway · 07/08/2020 19:50

We have a 5 bed. I’ve got a downstairs toilet, the main bathroom which the kids use and our en suite.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/08/2020 19:52

I'd say 3. 2 bathrooms and a toilet.

When we bought our house it was a 5bed with 1 bathroom and separate toilet! It's now a 4bed with added ensuite. No downstairs toilet- we don't notice!

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/08/2020 19:59

Like the majority here I would expect a downstairs loo and at least 2 upstairs with 5 bedrooms.

MotherPiglet · 07/08/2020 20:00

My 5 bed house has 1 downstairs toilet.
1 upstairs family bathroom
2 ensuites

uniglowooljumper · 07/08/2020 20:07

Maybe to you. Can't stand sharing a bathroom. The 'fad' in the past for big dining rooms seems utterly bonkers to me.

Pumpertrumper · 07/08/2020 20:09

We have a 5 bed and we have one downstairs, 2 ensuite then main bathroom

Same here and it’s not even a new build. At a push I could probably live without the second en-suite but the downstairs loo is used daily!
