If you were moving in 4 weeks when would you start packing?

Just that really. Moving from a 3 bed to a 4 bed, both owned so I've no end of tenancy clean to worry about

Trying to organise myself but no idea where to start! Any ideas?

I'm packing! Got the sideboard emptied and ready to move tomorrow.
Aiming to clear under the beds and 2 big cupboards today. Anything else is a bonus.
I'm going to highjack this thread @Rumours0fAHurricane and use it to keep me motivated!

Rumours0fAHurricane · 03/08/2019 10:06

@Mokepon I'll keep you company! I've only packed up a sideboard ... I sold the sideboard GrinDon't want to take it to our new house so part of the decluttering.

Today's jobs ...

Sort out shed
Tip run
Pack three boxes (ive done one already today - some kitchen bits and batteries. For some reason I grab a multi pack of Duracell most weeks to save running out (lots of remotes etc here) and I'll now stop doing that as I've got 12 packs in a drawer Grin Same with water filters for the Brita - I've got 15 of those

Personally I can’t bear the thought of actually packing a month before!

We moved last year...we spent about a week emptying and sorting the attic and garden shed etc.

Then a fortnight in cleaning and sorting and decluttering every room...including the insides of every drawer and cupboard, we went through all the clothes in the wardrobes, every bottle in the bathroom cabinet, every kitchen cupboard...everywhere. The mountain of clothes/general no longer needed stuff we got rid of was unreal.

Actual packing...we started about 5 days before. In fact, the kitchen was last and done completely in about 2 hours the night before the move 🤷🏻‍♀️

If everything is clean, organised and as minimalistic as possible, it’s easy to pack each room up in a few hours IME. Pick item up, wrap, box and repeat until the room is empty. Much more preferable than trying to decide a month before what you won’t need!

  • (I’m talking a normal medium 7 room/3 bed house-maybe you’d need more if you live in a mansion or have a lot if priceless antiques 😂)
Mokepon · 03/08/2019 20:51

How did you get on @Rumours0fAHurricane?
I managed under one bed and 1 big cupboard but also managed half the shed. And all of that has been delivered and put away in it's new home.
We also managed to unpack and set up our new tv, build a rack in the kitchen and put our modular sofa together in the correct configuration so I think we did good.
In bed now drinking gin and about to read Polo again for some light reilef!!
Hope you had a successful day.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 03/08/2019 20:58

@Mokepon ooh you did bloody well today. You've earned that Jilly Cooper - Prudence is my favourite

We totally cleared shed and tipped it over two runs. I also cleared our wardrobe out and packed my handbags. And we moved the already packed boxes into the shed (those that we are happy to be in there !)

Unfortunately the bottom fell out of one box and smashed to pieces an antique sugar shaker and a Waterford seahorse. Gutted. Could have been worse but I'll be taking more care from now on

Plans for tomorrow? I'm going to dismantle a desk and tip it on Monday I think

Ah shit, that's rubbish.
I know it's only stuff but it's stuff you really, really like.
We ran out of tape so I'm being super careful and trying not to make the boxes too heavy and carrying them from underneath iyswim. Although ours is mostly books and toys and not lovely China 😭.
Tomorrow is - move massive sideboard, washing machine and at least one bed frame. Hopefully also some more boxes but we'll see. We have a loan of a van and 2 strong boys so trying to make the most of that.
We'll have our 12 and a 3 yo in tow but lots of family coming to help which is really lovely. It's been very exciting as well as tiring but DH is dragging his feet so I'm hoping the young blood tomorrow will get him on his toes 🤣
We will survive and move somehow @Rumours0fAHurricane!!!

RhubarbTea · 04/08/2019 12:51

I have a week now til my move. I'm a single parent so am doing it all on my own but luckily don't have mountains of stuff. Well, DS does but lots of that has been packed up already. I'm excited to get the keys and also a bit daunted because if I fuck up there is no-one to pick up the slack! On move day I do have XP helping with driving the hire van which is amazing.
Have now done under kitchen sink, hurrah. Today I need to get some more boxes packed and start thinking about packing clothes.

rodentforce · 04/08/2019 18:47

Can i join? Moving day is 17th. Currently up to my ears in decluttering and packing, and I'm also cleaning the house myself (I'm renting so it has to be pristine or I might lose my deposit ... trying not to think of how the house I'm moving to, which I'm buying, will probably be much less clean). Like @RhubarbTea I'm a single mum, and so far this holiday have had no childcare! Thankfully the kids are off to holiday club from tomorrow. I have been trying to balance entertaining the kids, doing house stuff, and working (thankfully I can work from home ... have been getting up early before the kids wake up so I can get some stuff done). Am exhausted ...

Rumours0fAHurricane · 04/08/2019 20:29

Evening all. Looks like we are all being proactive! Or at least, getting there. And yes do join in. I don't move until 30th August but I'm in full swing now

Ordered new bed, mattress, bedside tables and blanket box today for delivery on the 30th. Felt weird giving an address that isn't ours yet!

Filled 5 large clear bags with my youngest's clothes and stacked them up in his wardrobe. He's been left with what he will be wearing for the next few weeks but all the out of season stuff is now in easy to grab bags. And I've filled 3 more bin bags for another tip run tomorrow

So that's my progress for the day!

sandybayley · 04/08/2019 21:51

@Rumours0fAHurricane - we're moving g on the 30th as well. We've booked packers so they'll do most of the work but we've done lots of decluttering, dump runs and chucking.

We've got rid of all the old paint (City of London kicked up) and packed winter clothes and coats. Been through the loft and weeded out stuff. Ordered a new bed, mattress and bar stools. Booked someone to come round and quote for a new front door a couple of days after we move. Also really nun g down the freezer - some interesting meals!

We're actually going on holiday next Saturday for two weeks so I'm now in holiday packing mode.

yummumto3girls · 04/08/2019 22:10

We are moving on 23rd August! 4 bed plus annexe and out buildings to a 2 bed in need of a loft conversion and extension! We need to be ruthless and have both had 10 days leave which I have mostly spent going to the recycling centre and selling stuff! Most of it is stuff we brought with us 5 years ago and have never used, some still in the original moving boxes! We have rented a storage unit so will be hiring a van tomorrow to take everything we don’t need during building works there. My advice, if you don’t use it or need it, don’t take it with you

Rumours0fAHurricane · 04/08/2019 23:07

@sandybayley wow, you've got it all going in! Holiday packing as well!

OP posts:
Rumours0fAHurricane · 04/08/2019 23:09

@yummumto3girls I'm being so ruthless it's unbelievable! I'm also doing that thing where I feel I need all new for my shiny new house - as far as is feasible of course

So my towels are all going as I blew £200 on new ones in John Lewis. They're packed nicely away with new tea towels, linen baskets, oven gloves, Denby plate set, duvet sets, actual duvets.... how I'm managing to hide it all from my husband is quite something 😂😂

OP posts:
IdblowJonSnow · 04/08/2019 23:12

Nothing because I wouldn't have anywhere to store it!
As you've already decluttered I wouldn't bother for another week.

yummumto3girls · 05/08/2019 17:59

Rumours - I think that’s the trouble, when you move to a new house you want new stuff! Smile

31RueCambon · 05/08/2019 18:03

Id declutter ruthlessly room by room and box up books and winter clothes

Skyejuly · 05/08/2019 18:45

I've moved 7 times in 10 years and what works for me is declutter a room and use it as storage. We've emptied the dining room and putting seaked labelled boxes In there.

Dump run every day.

I want new stuff but cant afford it lol so being ruthless but frugal with reusing things.

Pack declutter and clean as you go

Mokepon · 05/08/2019 20:18

Doing well, everyone. Brew or Wine.
We moved most of the big stuff, bed frames, sideboard etc yesterday and managed another couple of loads today with most of the pictures/bikes and bike shed.
So now just clothes, kitchen stuff and bits and bobs. Probably more than I think but isn't it always?
Ordered a couple of bits of furniture that we need.
Tomorrow's agenda is finish up the last bits of painting. Get all the stuff put away in the attic we don't need. Pack up the rest of DDs wardrobe. Probably another tip run.

I'm hoping we'll be in by Friday. Maybe slightly optimistic but I like a wee deadline Grin.

MrsPworkingmummy · 05/08/2019 20:30

We are moving on 19th August and our removal company are dropping boxes and packing materials for us tomorrow. We've had a HUGE declutter (mainly of a double garage that was packed to the rafters), hired a skip (filled in a day), given away lots of furniture and given lots of old clothes to charity (about 18 big bin bags full!!). We now need to pack. I'm the opposite of a minimalist, so have lots of candles, picture frames, antiques etc to pack. With two kids running around, it's not the easiest. Good luck everyone x

Rumours0fAHurricane · 05/08/2019 21:00

@Mokepon sounds very productive. Willing you on for Friday!! Deadlines are good to have

@MrsPworkingmummy sounds like the amount of stuff I've been skipping and tipping - and I hilariously consider myself minimalistic 😂

Today has been ..

4 clear pack bags with winter coats and autumnal stuff

5 bags to the tip (almost on first name terms now)

3 bags packed for charity shop tomorrow

Five items being collected after putting them on Facebook

So that's me for today!

Tomorrow's jobs ... packing up some coat hangers. That'll take two bin bags! Packing more of my beauty products (it's my job - beauty not packing! - so I have literally loads and loads and loads)

Keep going everyone

OP posts:
sandybayley · 05/08/2019 21:57

More packing boxes delivered today. DS1 has packed most of the books in his room (he has a lot). Very helpful having DC who can pack. DD has also packed most of her room. DS2 has chucked a lot of stuff as well.

Bag of stuff to the charity shop. Gathered all the balls from the house and put in one container. I have no idea how one family can have so many balls. Tennis. Hockey. Football. Golf. Squash. Mainly keeping them for the dog.

DH is sorting through all his files and shredding (I can hear the shredder!). He's been sorting out a home insurance issue all day as our vendors had not declared a claim they'd made on the house. We may need to make a claim against them after completion. They actually lied about it in enquiries so we need to get legal advice on potential remedy.

Bought school uniform for DS1 and DS2 as they'll be back to school a couple of days after we move. Need to see in name tags (sigh).

Two more random meals eaten from the freezer. Just some turkey mince (yuck) and casserole beef to use up. Any ideas?

Tomorrow - need to order bedding for DD as she is getting a new double bed and iron for holiday packing.

applepieicecream · 05/08/2019 22:05

Skip about a month before to have a clear out and then pay the movers to pack. Wouldn’t ever do it myself

Rumours0fAHurricane · 05/08/2019 22:15

@sandybayley I'm useless for advice on the freezer using up. I usually have a Gousto box each week and I MUST cancel this and use some freezer food. Trouble is - it's not very appetising compared to Gousto!

I did go through the freezer a couple of weeks ago though and binned loads. All the absolute rubbish. Did same with the cupboard stores too.

@Rumours0fAHurricane - tonight we had spaghetti bol, haddock fishcakes, rice, pasta and broccoli plus some frozen fancy egg tarts. DC not impressed.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 05/08/2019 22:34

EnvyI'm with your DC! Eek! Still / needs must!
