If you were moving in 4 weeks when would you start packing?

Just that really. Moving from a 3 bed to a 4 bed, both owned so I've no end of tenancy clean to worry about

Trying to organise myself but no idea where to start! Any ideas?

My OP really isn't about cleaning houses so spectacular point missing there. My Op asks when you'd start packing to move if the move was 4 weeks away.

Some really good advice here though so thanks

I'm moving back to UK in October and I have a 13 week schedule, so everything is done by the end of September, giving me breathing space for oven cleaning, defrosting fridges and freezers etc. It's hard work, and takes longer than you think.

Enb76 · 01/08/2019 11:27

I'd start throwing stuff out now but I wouldn't pack - I've moved 5 times and three times packed myself and it was a PITA and stressful. I am happy to pay to have all of that taken away from me.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/08/2019 11:28

I'll never do my own packing fo a move ever again. Movers that pack are the BEST thing ever. So efficient.

longtompot · 01/08/2019 11:43

As everyone has said, now is the time to start packing.
I wrapped & packed all ornaments, pictures, and fragile things that were inside cupboards, which we didn't use often.
I would pack a layer of books in the bottom of a box and then put out of season clothing on top, or bedding etc. Other clothes & bedding would go in black bags.
I packed the kitchen cupboards over the weeks and by the last week only essentials were left unpacked.
I cleaned each cupboard as I packed.
Hall cupboard was all packed too.
The loft was a huge job, but not as big as our lean to (garden dumping ground :( )
I also potted up some favourite plants from the garden, plus had our shed to empty and take down.

We moved from a long term rental to our first owned home, and had a few weeks crossover between end of tenancy and moving in, so we moved boxes every day. If we were to move again, and I hope so but not for at least 10 years, I really would consider having packers come in and do it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/08/2019 12:17

Everyone talking about buying crates and boxes - every time I’ve moved the removal company have provided these about four weeks before. Do they not do this any more?

We move in 3 weeks. Not started yet. 4bed to 4bed x

Blobby10 · 01/08/2019 12:28

I'm not moving until October and have already emptied and sorted the contents of the loft! Garage will be next on my list followed by kids wardrobes one by one (they are young adult 'kids' and all away at uni/work). My stuff is fairly well sorted but as I am doing all the packing by myself so would rather do it sooner than later!

You will still need to clean the place for your buyers btw!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/08/2019 12:56

Moving end of August... Currently pre packing. (International so we have packers and they have to ensure we have no banned items). Was supposed to be tomorrow but slightly behind schedule so glad of the few extra days.... But not many as we had holiday booked.

Packers will pack literally anything left lying around... Passports, full bins, the hamster cage (but not the hamster...)

Rumours0fAHurricane · 01/08/2019 13:53

@Blobby10 OF COURSE I WILL CLEAN! Where on earth has this come from? My house is totally immaculate as it is but regardless of that , it will be cleaned

I asked when to pack boy if I should clean. So bizarre that some people just cannot seem to read

@longtompot some good tips there

OP posts:
Blobby10 · 01/08/2019 14:09

@RumoursOfAHurrican please accept my apologies for insulting you! I didn't mean to. I read your OP as if you didn't need to bother cleaning as it wasn't an end of tenancy !! Sorry!

Svalberg · 01/08/2019 14:13

Packers are fine until they pack that packet of nuts that should have been in the kitchen but was in the dining room & you shove the dining room boxes in the garage because you're doing major works in the dining room. Then mice discover the nuts, get in the box, shred or wee over everything & you have a mice infestation to get rid of Blush

RhubarbTea · 01/08/2019 15:43

Not everyone can afford to pay people to do it for them so to keep suggesting that when OP has said she's not going down that route is pointless.

OP I'm moving in a week and a half (fuuuuuccccck) and have been prepping since about 8-10 weeks before move. Mainly because last time I left it too late and it was an utter shambles. I did that thing some people have mentioned of not wanting to have my nice familiar stuff packed away too soon, ended up massively misjudging how many boxes I'd need and how long packing them would take and the whole thing was a stressfest.
I had this idea of 'ah it will be fine, I could pack in an afternoon if I needed to' but the other day I spend some of the afternoon just weeding the garden ready for the move. I am quite bad at working out how long stuff will take though Grin

My local health store has been amazing for free boxes in just the right size, they get a lot of jars and tins delivered often so I call just before recycling day or when they've had a delivery and get given loads!

Things you forget will take ages:
Loft if you have one, I don't.
Shed or garden area
Under the fucking kitchen sink! Yet to do mine, too scared...
Under beds if used for storage. Ditto any walk in wardrobes or cupboards where loads of stuff is stored.

Consider decluttering:
Books. Bloody heavy if you don't even like some of them.
Clothes
DVDs/games
Bathroom bottles
Garden shite
Old paperwork or bank statements you no longer need.

Off to pack another box now... Good luck with your move OP.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 01/08/2019 16:15

@Blobby10 sorry for howling at you 😂😂

Oh I can afford for someone to pack for me, that's not a problem at all. Trouble is, I'm a control freak and I just want to do it myself

I've started doing a bit more today. Packed my make up (well my stuff I've decided

OP posts:
Rumours0fAHurricane · 01/08/2019 16:16

... I can do without for a month. I am in the beauty industry though and I've filled five large boxes with my spare make up alone. And this is before we get to the skin care. Grin

Rumours0fAHurricane · 01/08/2019 16:18

@RhubarbTea ooh under the kitchen sink! I'll make that tomorrow's job. And you're right, there's just so much to do and it all takes longer than you think. Hope your move goes smoothly and is stress free

We are moving in 6 weeks, no date yet but 6 weeks has been mentioned.

I'm reluctant to start packing until I get a confirmed date in case I jinx the whole move, might be crazy but we looked at this exact house 14 years ago but missed out.

Loving the idea of packing clothes in clear bags, this way I could start but keep them hanging on the wardrobe in the bags. So packing but not really Blush

Me and dd are aiming to sort out the attic, box things up etc, label. Most of it is done as we had a major sort out a few years ago, it just needs finishing off. I'll tell myself we're organising not packing Grin

Bluefargo · 02/08/2019 14:52

I've moved 3 times in the last 5 years - pack a box a night from now til a week before and then you only have to do essentials in the last week

sackrifice · 02/08/2019 14:55

The moment I know I am moving is when I start packing and freecycling everything i don't want to take. i have boxes open in the room with the most space and every trip from a room will be carrying something to go in the box. I write on the side of the box what's in it.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 02/08/2019 20:20

I've started! Got around 6 boxes stacked in the conservatory now and I decluttered under the kitchen sink.

Turn of the shed tomorrow but I'm leaving that to the husband
