If you were moving in 4 weeks when would you start packing?

Just that really. Moving from a 3 bed to a 4 bed, both owned so I've no end of tenancy clean to worry about

Trying to organise myself but no idea where to start! Any ideas?

They have big hanging rails and just lift clothes on their hangers into the rail and wheel straight I to the van.

We used movers last time and they were so fab. Worth every penny. They did everything, it was amazing to watch.
This time we decided we had loads of time so not to bother. I do have a man with a van though and family are helping. Still panicking, waahh.
GinGin. I think we need doubles @Rumours0fAHurricane

RainOrSun · 31/07/2019 20:43

I basically pulled it out of the cupboards, and dumped it on the nearest bed/surface.
They wrapped it, packed it (and got it through 2 sets of customs-that bit cost us).

Mokepon · 31/07/2019 20:43

And obviously I have no words of wisdom except start now Grin.

RainOrSun · 31/07/2019 20:44

Oh, and rocked up with every shapped box we could possibly need, rolls of tape, bubble wrap and wrapping paper.
And then took everything away. Apart from the empty house, you couldn't tell they had been.

Now!

Rumours0fAHurricane · 31/07/2019 20:44

I've gone with 'AnyVan' as used them before for a couple of things and they were decent. They're also very reasonably priced and fully insured

I moved recently. At 8 weeks i had packed everything not needed for day to day life and was decluttering. So winter clothes, tools, decorations etc. Then four weeks was spent selling stuff i didn't really need. About two weeks out all clothes apart from a minimal set was packed.

Due to the way the move worked i sent about 70% of the stuff ahead of me with a week to go.

Final few days were minimal packing.

Didnt use a removal firm. Booked space on a lorry and hired a man to help load it.

Moonflower12 · 31/07/2019 20:53

For clothes I'd just put them in clear bin bags. You can get them in Morrisons. Then you can see what's in there without having to rip them open.
When packing books don't fill the boxes too full. They are so heavy.

For pictures etc just a layer of bubble wrap is fine.

Good luck! I love moving house.

I'm not using the £850 service. That's for them to pack for you. I'm using their moving service so basically they'll move items, load onto lorry and then reverse that at other end. That's £300 which I'm happy with

Clear bags for clothes is a great idea

Ha, £300 is 6 weeks council tax round these parts sadly!

I'd like a packing ninja though!

You can have those totally mismatched freezer meals to use up stuff! They are fun 😊

LoafofSellotape · 31/07/2019 21:06

Only £300? That's why the packing is really expensive. Ime it's the other way round.

Rumours0fAHurricane · 31/07/2019 21:07

Yep, for them to pack adds an extra £500 odd. And I really would prefer to do it myself I think - although I'm tempted of course!

After using the packing service when DM moved I would always go that way. No boxes cluttering up your space for weeks. Just done in a day, and put in the right room at the other end

I'd stop stressing and pay for full removals and packing. Worth every penny and full packing isn't usually much more than having them shift your boxes and dismantle your furniture and rebuild at the other end.

I've done one move where we I did all the packing and swore I was never making that mistake again.

MiniMum97 · 31/07/2019 22:42

I would pay someone else to do it for me. I did it last time (thankfully as we only had two days warning!) we moved and it was money very well spent. Would definitely do but again.

If you go down this road you do need to pack a box of your very delicate and irreplaceable/sentimental things. We had one box and we took this in the car.

Movers are so fast. They packed and moved the entire house in less than a day!

Amber17 · 31/07/2019 23:07

In a similar boat here but moving in less than three weeks.

Last time I paid for the packing service but it seems to have got a lot more pricy, they wanted £500 this time!

I started packing yesterday, just christmas stuff and books.

WouldYouLikeAnOmlette · 31/07/2019 23:13

You mention no end of tenancy clean? Are you not planning on cleaning your house though? The previous owners of my current house only did a surface clean and it was really really shit of them SadEnvy

Rumours0fAHurricane · 31/07/2019 23:30

@WouldYouLikeAnOmlette I own my house. I meant ' I don't need to consider any end of tenancy clean therefore this isn't something I have to add to the to do list'

Blimey - my house is immaculate and OF COURSE I'll leave it clean
