Why doesn’t anyone want our house?!

Been on the market since January.
Dropped the price twice, recently switched agents.
Lots of viewings, generally positive feedback. People like the house, but no one wants to buy it!!

OP posts:

Nice house. No kerb appeal.

BrokenWing · 12/07/2019 18:52

Honestly, it's nice inside, like your kitchen diner, but the front door down a narrow dark side passage and one loo in a 3 bed would be a straight no for me. Wouldn't even view.

Are all the houses in the street the same with front door down the side or was it moved when the garage was converted?

Redwinestillfine · 12/07/2019 18:53

It's a lovely house op. My only thought is it's really overpriced but I am in NW and I bam sure it's priced right for where you are

FudgeMallowDelight · 12/07/2019 18:54

The garden is good for kids. I'd probably have a few more plants, but a lot of people like it how you already have it

CheeezyBeanz · 12/07/2019 18:56

Agree with #regmover: how can you comment on the price if you don't know the area intimately - that's not helpful :-(

Raybay · 12/07/2019 19:00

I would say for me a downstairs toilet is a must and the back garden is small and lacking in any planting. However, I love a full garden and the privacy trees can give and understand that everyone is different. Unless you have to drop for a quick sale to not lose out on another place, I'd take it off the market and put it back on in a few months.
One last point, do you have dogs or other smelly pets/fag smoke? If your carpets smelt I'd be thinking of the expense of replacement as a buyer.
Good luck with your sale.

Runnerduck34 · 12/07/2019 19:03

are the dimension of bedrooms correct on house description???
Bedroom Two
7'0 x 5'6
Bedroom Three
9'6 x 6'6
Floor plans give bigger measurements for bedroom 2 . Hope floor plan measurements are correct otherwise bedroom two is too small to be classed as a bedroom imo. incorrect smaller room sizes on a description for bedroom 2 will put people off!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 12/07/2019 19:04

I think it looks lovely OP not sure on prices in your area but that would get snapped up in my area (Essex). Good luck x

Historydweeb · 12/07/2019 19:05

Op I think your house is lovely!!

LouH1981 · 12/07/2019 19:05

I think it looks lovely. Inside especially! Maybe pop some pots with some inexpensive flowers in out the front which you can then take with you.
Is it by a busy road or close to industrial buildings? (Apologies if you have already mentioned this)

PurpleGlitter1983 · 12/07/2019 19:07

Too modern and I wouldn't pay that much for a detached house that has neighbours so close.

twosoups1972 · 12/07/2019 19:12

I think it's a lovely house! Can't believe some of these comments. When we were looking at houses, the main thing we considered was the location (and the aspect). Everything else can be changed. We certainly did NOT look at how clean the grouting was Grin

I'm not familiar with house prices in that area and yes the door on the side isn't ideal....but you can't have everything and I think it's a nice family home.

WildfirePonie · 12/07/2019 19:12

I just looked on street view too, next doors drive looks a bit of a mess tbh. I wonder if you could offer to help tidy up...? It might be putting people off!

bubblegumunicorn · 12/07/2019 19:17

It looks lovely only thing I would do is paint the walls in the bedrooms white/a pale colour people like to imagine them selves living somewhere and I know I can do that much easier with a neutral colour scheme!

andnotadroptodrink · 12/07/2019 19:18

Can you add a photo of the front that makes it clear you can park at 90 degrees to the house? The drive area looks shorter in the new photo than in the one when you bought the house yourself - I wasn't sure if you had to park at an angle. If there's actually room to park two cars at the front it would be worth making that clear.

kittytiggy · 12/07/2019 19:18

Hi, I was in the exact same situation!
What helped us, I'm afraid to say is dropping the price.
Yes, we got less money for it than we would have liked, but it was such a weight off our shoulders when it sold!!! x

Heartbrokenagain1 · 12/07/2019 19:18

Lovely house OP! I agree with what PPs have already said about adding some greenery in pots to the front. What about dressing up the main bedroom a little? It looks a bit "bachelor pad" as it is. Crisp white bedding with a nice throw and a few matching cushions might make it a little more appealing.

Good luck! Hope it sells soon. Come back and let us all know!

bingbongnoise · 12/07/2019 19:26

@noitsachicken

Cons...

Too expensive, no kerb appeal, very close to other homes (may as well be a semi, no room for future extension/expanding.)

Nice house inside though, well looked after, decent sized rooms, decent garden.

The houses being so fiercely close together would really put me off.
Sorry. Blush

I agree with other posters that there are a multitude of detached homes you could buy that are further from neighbours

eg,

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72251557.html

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-63189015.html

Obviously doesn't bother everyone though, as they do sell.

Good luck. I do feel you may need to drop it to the 200 thousands...

flowergrrl77 · 12/07/2019 19:29

Probably the biggest thing you could do that costs nothing... is to have the estate agent change the order of the pictures!! The kitchen diner first!!

LillithsFamiliar · 12/07/2019 19:32

I think it's a nice house. The only changes I'd make are removing the white furniture from the blue boys' bedroom. It's blocking the heater and pushing the blue wardrobe too close to the cupboard door. It makes the room seem smaller. If you removed the white furniture, you could push the blue wardrobe closer to the window and it would make the cupboard door corner seem more open.

Dreamtheimpossibledream · 12/07/2019 19:35

I think it’s a nice house - the outside could do with some flower pots or something.

To be honest I would have fewer pictures. eg. kitchen diner looks lovely in the first one, but I like it less in each subsequent picture.

frumpety · 12/07/2019 19:43

Can you get a quote from a plumber about converting the cupboard under the stairs to a cloakroom with toilet ? Even if you don't want to do this at the moment , it puts the possibility in the buyers mind.

Side entrance houses are always trickier, people generally have a image of a 'front' door in their minds when thinking of a house.

Your living room storage is brilliant ( how many inches is your TV , some people prefer bigger , this is something that could easily be changed by a joiner ? ) but other than the kitchen and under stairs cupboard there isn't much else, are there other opportunities to build in storage in the bedrooms ? if there are mention it at viewings , will you be leaving the shed ?

HuggedTheRedwoods · 12/07/2019 19:43

I like your house aside from the front door situation. I'm sorry but that would stop me even coming to view, partly for general access reasons but also because I like to see a nice front door (as sad as that sounds!) but presumably your viewers must already have been aware of the design it can't be that off putting to those that came to view.

I had a look on streetview to see if the entrance alleyway looked wider and noticed your neighbour has a sign on the wall - do next door run a business from home? If yes, what is it? Also, what backs on to you - is it a garage unit? Could it be neighbouring businesses putting viewers off?

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/07/2019 19:47

I think kerb appeal is important and it needs some dressing up, a small but effective detail. What about window boxes under the front windows? A few pots? I would never worry about decor because I'd want to change anyway. Your beautiful lounge bookcase is lovely! I have three loos but all upstairs, I regret not buying a house with a downstairs loo admittedly. It's a difficult market all round, houses used to be on the market for no more than a week where I live (a good commuter route in North Herts) but they are hanging around for ages now. The Brexit word has been mentioned a lot. I hope you manage to shift it soon! Good luck.

TwilightHarmony · 12/07/2019 19:47

I live in Newport and since the toll has gone on the bridge our house prices have gone up. This could be affecting your housing market, as you get more for your money over here and commute to Bristol.
