Their 'argument' against working appears to be centred around him only being able to earn minimum wage. When I went to college there were lots of students on benefits and their course fees were entirely subsidised. What's stopping him training for a job that can bring in more than min wage ?

Roobie · 24/07/2007 18:15

I wouldn't say they were greedy just because they've ended up with a 8 bedroom house. I don't expect they're living in the lap of luxury.

Do people really resent 'funding the lifestyles' of people on benefits with kids? Aren't there people who post on here who have had kids while already on benefits with no intention of getting a job afterwards for economic reasons? Or is there an allowed quota of kids?
I'm not averse to having a smirk at the whole set up and the kids' names etc but am genuinely surprised at some of the vehemence on this thread. Conjures up an image of middle-class mums sitting there with pursed lips muttering 'dole scum'.

Cammelia · 24/07/2007 18:16

pmsl at people feeling sorry for them because they've got 12 children to bring up

also, cigarette lighter? So they can afford to smoke then

aloha · 24/07/2007 18:17

I think of how hard my mother in particular worked. She cleaned the floors in old people's homes. We lived in a council house. Please don't do the whole, 'middle class mums sneering at the poor' routine.

Cammelia · 24/07/2007 18:18

Roobie, that family are costing the tax-payer £44 k a year in benefits

Wake up

CountessDracula · 24/07/2007 18:19

um
we have one thread bemoaning parents returning to work
and another berating parents for not working

typical mumsnet!

(Aloha have you started subscribing to the Daily Mail? You don't sound like you at all)

aloha · 24/07/2007 18:20

It's their sheer arrogance that pisses me off so much, I think. Their utter conviction that the world owes them a living.

RibenaBerry · 24/07/2007 18:20

Not gonna touch the comments on benefits, but my goodness those names. Love the fact that her kids by her first partner all have normal names and then she meets someone new and goes all 'Jordan' on them. Kalifornya? (Makes me want to sing the OC theme song Kal -i- forn- yaaaaa).

CountessDracula · 24/07/2007 18:20

ooh
you have
norty

aloha · 24/07/2007 18:21

I cannot bear it that people think they can do whatever they like and other people can deal with it.
I'll choose to let my dog shit in the street, someone else can clear it up.
I'll choose to chuck my litter out of the car. Someone else can deal with it.
I'll choose to play loud music late at night. Nobody else matters except me.
I'll choose to have a dozen kids and not work. Someone else can pay for it.

DontlookatmeIamborrrring · 24/07/2007 18:22

Grrr - I stopped at 2 children because I cannot afford more, they are very irresponsible IMO.

iota · 24/07/2007 18:23

this article can't seem to get the names and ages right - there are 2 attempts:

Former book-keeper Samantha, 35, had five children from a previous relationship when she married Carl, who used to work as a door-to-door salesman. They are Craig, 16, Adam, 14, Jack, 13, Rebekah, 11, and Harry, nine.

The couple then had seven of their own: twins Parris-Jordan and Kesla Blu, eight; twins Mason and Peaches, six; Logan, four, and the three-year-old twins Skye and Kalifornya.

Paul and Samantha have eight children together and she has four from a previous relationship, making 12 in total.

The children they have had together are Harry 10, Parris Jordan 8, Kesla 8, Mason 7, Peaches 7, Logan 5, Skye 3 and Californya 3.

Samantha's children from her previous relationship are Craig 17, Adam 16, Jack 14 and Rebekah 13.

CountessDracula · 24/07/2007 18:24

well aloha
you should stop it
pick up your dog poo fgs!

foxinsocks · 24/07/2007 18:25

they've probably done the world a service getting a door to door salesman off the streets

sparklygothkat · 24/07/2007 18:25

I choose to have 3 kids (dh was working at that point) I didn't chose, however, to have 2 disabled kids, and yes I chose to have another baby! But as soon as DS has his operation, and recovers enough, Dh will be going back to work.

I have to say I don't understand how people can say they are worse off working than claiming benifits, as we are over £400 a month worse off on benifits.

zookeeper · 24/07/2007 18:25

Aloha you'll be telling us that you went to school barefoot next.

This thread is like a Daily Mail Editorial comment.

Yuk

CountessDracula · 24/07/2007 18:26

it is
your fervour is very DM

Roobie · 24/07/2007 18:26

So what? It's only £44k and there are a hell of a lot of taxpayers.
Routine? As in the 'my old mum worked her fingers to the bone ..... etc etc'. Oh, that kind of routine.

Blandmum · 24/07/2007 18:28

There are some names in the list that would make any teacher draw a sharp breath.

I'm reminded of some very dear friends of mine. They had three children, and would have loved a 4th, but didn't have the room in the house or the money to pay for the 4th, so they reluctanly stopped at 3. they were working. No=one was going to give them a bigger house so that they could have the family size they actually wanted.

sparklygothkat · 24/07/2007 18:28

44k is only £60 per person/child a week. and I am guessing that their housing benifit and council tax rebate is included in that figure.

Cammelia · 24/07/2007 18:30

Only £60 per person per week

Oh that's ok then

aloha · 24/07/2007 18:33

I think it is morally wrong for people to expect other people - many of whom are much worse off - to pay for their lifestyle. Yes I do.
Yes, I did grow up poor. I respect my mother for working to support us. WTF is wrong with that?

NotReallyHereHunker · 24/07/2007 18:33

"Dole scum"

sparklygothkat · 24/07/2007 18:33

what I am saying that if there was 4 of them, rather than 14 it would only work out £240 a week, which is a low income. But because there is 14 it seems more...

sparklygothkat · 24/07/2007 18:34

anyway I am off this thread before people get upset!!!
