No tips on the homework Soaked but will steal yours once it's done :) sorry about the wrong joists! Hope they get the right ones soon!

avocuddl · 11/06/2019 20:11

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo in love with your combo!! Will be going for something very similar! Love it!

muchtodobutstopforcuddles · 11/06/2019 20:56

@Linguaphile your kitchen is beautiful!! I love the floor too. May I ask where it is from and what the dimensions are of your kitchen/living space are?

WorrisomeHeart · 11/06/2019 21:04

lingua that is such a gorgeous room!!!

Well the rain has stopped play here too - the scaffold is finally up but seeing as the first job is to take the roof off, the builder is (sensibly!) waiting for the weather to ease 😂

TheFatberg · 11/06/2019 21:06

Soaked I'll double check on our downlights but we've got either two or three adjacent to either side of the island. Kind of like the letter H including the pendant lights over the island

TheFatberg · 11/06/2019 21:07

Also I might be the only one happy about the rain as we've just had turf installed which needs to be watered.

soakedat3 · 11/06/2019 22:30

@TheFatberg, @Linguaphile, @Hoppahouse and others who are nearly done or done-ish, how bad did your gardens end up? Just so I can prepare myself! At the moment I am ok if it's grass that's damaged but am keeping an eye on the flower beds. I was hoping for a first flowering of peonies that I planted last year too - bad planning!

Linguaphile · 11/06/2019 22:35

Thanks all!

@muchtodobutstopforcuddles It’s a bit of an L-shaped room, with the wall with the cupboards being about 6m long I think. Overall at the biggest points it’s 7m wide (measuring along the wall with the windows) and about 9m long.

@Hoppahouse Yes I did! The splashback is a few months old now. It was a bit slap-bang in the end as I got so fed up with babying along the plain wall. 😅 One day I had just had enough so we had the tiler (who was there for another job) install it that day with extra tiles from other parts of the house. One day i’d like to change it—the grey probably wasn’t the best design choice—but for now it does the job and at least is cohesive with the rest of the house.

@soakedat3 Yes it’s in there! I’m tall and didn’t want an extractor or pendant lights in my field of vision. The box a fair bit bigger than I anticipated to be honest but super functional at least.

Linguaphile · 11/06/2019 22:40

Oh, and @muchtodobutstopforcuddles the flooring is engineered oak from this company: www.par-ky.com/en/m/

We had it glued down so it feels proper solid. I went for the matt lacquer finish which so far seems pretty bullet proof with kids, plus I don’t have to freak out about water on it. My daughter painted the floor the other day and it came right off. 😅

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/06/2019 23:28

@TheFatberg I'm glad someone is going to enjoy those Next pendants as it's not going to be me! Mr WheresDoes has not been allowed any much input into kitchen design but he hates pendants over islands and no amount of Pinteresting beautiful light would sway him. He even got Beardy Builder to support his opposition to them. The compromise is zoning the downlighters so that there are three spots over island so I have the option of adding lights later (after serious sulking and whining)

TheFatberg · 12/06/2019 05:38

soakedat3 our garden wasn't particularly nice in the first place so although it did turn into a dumping ground for all of the old doors, parts of the conservatory etc, it didn't destroy anything. I hope the builders are able to work around your garden and not make a mess.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo maybe when our lights are in, I can post a photo and it might tempt him to change his mind? Downlights will look just as nice though and will be lower maintenance.

Hoppahouse · 12/06/2019 06:48

@soakedat3 our garden had stacks of bricks and also the conservatory bits, old radiators etc dumped in it. You would never know now though as it recovered pretty well. I have put grass seed down in areas that needed it and with all this rain, the patches have almost gone!
Our building work went on from Jan - end of April (although we still have things to finish inside) and we did have decent winter weather compared to this now 😫

Linguaphile · 12/06/2019 07:07

Oh yes our garden was a nightmare, full of old nails, rebar, and chunks of concrete. They cleared most of the main rubble when they left but we had a company come to clear it all and make it useable again. Was a bit of a shock how expensive it is to fix up a garden—we hadn’t budgeted for that and it was truly necessary to do as the children couldn’t play there otherwise!

We did the bare minimum now so that it looks decent and they can play safely, and then next year we’ll finish it off properly.

TheFatberg · 12/06/2019 07:17

Are people getting work done to the "old" side of their house too? That's definitely taking some of our budget to make sure everything matches throughout - radiators, new skirting, and possibly new doors too. Plus we'll need new carpet upstairs but think we'll just try and match as much as possible so we don't have to redo the stairs.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 12/06/2019 08:17

@Linguaphile so are those large format bathroom tiles as your splashback? I don't think I've ever seen such large tiles in a kitchen, and I really like the look.
@TheFatberg I don't think seeing "my" lights in situ will shift him but I'd like to see "what could have been"

Gardens - we have planned ahead a bit re the garden. We have dug up a few plants and replanted them away from the main building zone. 2 favorite shrubs are now in big tubs and I hope to replant them afterwards. Yesterday we cut back a lot of surrounding plants to make them more compact and less vulnerable to damage as people walk by.
We're actually extending the tiny patio over 2 flower beds nearest the house so if they get trashed it's not a problem. But yes, the patio work was not included in our original budget, and I expect it to be several thousand. But it will allow me to finally have an outdoor rotary drier, so Yay!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 12/06/2019 08:37

@soakedat3 or @WorrisomeHeart
Would someone who has actually broken ground like to start a new thread?
Since my build has yet to start I would be a fraud to be the OP

Linguaphile · 12/06/2019 08:47

WhereDoesThisToiletGo yes they are! 😅 We had the large format tile splashback in our last house and loved it—so easy to keep clean and a lot less grout. Also quick to install! Closer view in the pic.

Kitcat47 · 16/07/2019 21:33

Hi we are looking to extend Kitchen Dining room out by 3 meters across the full length of house 6 meters. We have had some plans drawn up. Has anyone had an extension around the same size? What was the cost. I sent the plan to a builder and he give me an estimate of £34000 plus Vat just for the shell.
