Oh no Worrisome, sorry to her that and hope everything goes smoothly for you.

That is a fantastic price for splashback and I think aluminium is really easy to clean. I also hate cleaning tile grout and was thinking glass but put off by the cost. No one told me about coloured aluminium!

But I have chosen some marble small subway tiles. I kind of like how they look all the way to the top on the wall with the range and extractor. Kind of like this picture. I think I read you could treat grout. I really hope so!

I would think as long as the surface is shiny a dark blue wouldn't suck light out.

I really love those soaked and have been looking for some. Where are you getting yours from? Can start the thread tiles too 🤣

Dogzndiamonds · 10/06/2019 08:24

I'm thinking of having brickslips as my splashback but don't know whether it is a good idea or not??! I love the look though.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/06/2019 08:28

I can't imagine brick slips are easily cleanable, which is the main criterion for a splashback

soakedat3 · 10/06/2019 09:27

In the photo it looks like there is an upstand and the bricks. That might make it more practical as few stains (unless it's bolognaise) make it so far up the wall? You can get brick patterned wallpaper and seal it for a more wipeable surface maybe @Dogzndiamonds?

Avo, these are where I'm going to get ours. It's quite a small tile but I like the softness of the colour of it. So many marble sample tiles in our kitchen right now!!

Dogzndiamonds · 10/06/2019 09:30

Yes I think upstands would be very sensible! Our hob is going to be on the island so it's just the sink to think about.

avocuddl · 10/06/2019 10:11

Thanks Soaked! They look lush. Just ordered the sample!

soakedat3 · 10/06/2019 13:58

A good round up of splashbacks that does confirm that you can have something a bit different above the upstands and it would still be practical. :)

We have dry weather AND builders this afternoon. Whoop whoop!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/06/2019 17:11

@soakedat3 it's CHUCKING it down here, I swear I just saw an Ark with 2 elephants, 2 giraffes and a couple of zebra float past!
I suspect the Weather Gods think we are starting our foundations this week!

Meeting with kitchen designer tomorrow, hopefully sign off on tweaked design. As long as Mr WheresDoes doesn't suddenly decide he hates it and why can't we have mahogany
Shaker instead

northernruth · 10/06/2019 17:36

Hello all, new lurker. Part way through a large double side extension with a single utility and a single box at the rear. Currently grappling with kitchen layouts and finishes. Looking at Plykea and Custom Fronts

soakedat3 · 10/06/2019 19:17

Oh no @WhereDoesThisToiletGo! The merest sniff of foundations does seem to send the rain gods into over drive. You couldn't tell it's JUNE!!

Hi @northernruth. What kind of fronts are you looking at? They always look lovely in magazines. Do you need to organise the Ikea delivery side yourself?

We are one level of brieze block on top of foundation block today. I think they worked for 3/4 hours and were off but I guess things need to dry and stick together. It's not like Daddy Pig and Mr Bull at all people!

Linguaphile · 11/06/2019 09:50

Hello all! Very long time since I was last on here. Just posting as the kitchen is finally complete now that our over island box has been done and we have a splash back! So glad to finally be finished. For those in the midst of projects: take heart! It will be over one day and you will have a home that you love to show for it!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/06/2019 17:18

Final meeting with kitchen designer at showroom. Thankfully Mr WhereDoes did not demand a change to mahogany Shaker doors, and knowing what was required of him, duly validated all my choices!
Just awaiting updated plans, but have chosen doors.
White wall and base units on three sides, navy island 90 x 220cm, mottled white quartz worktop, oak porcelain tiles .
Worktop looks grey here but it's really a lovely white, grey and hint of beige mottle effect

Lovely!!! 😍 Very similar to our colours!

About our extractor fan - we hardly ever use one anyway and it was between moving the hob off the island (and swapping for the sink), an alternative expensive option and this (not particularly pretty) extractor! I don't notice smells lingering tbh...

Hoppahouse · 11/06/2019 17:34

Although ours is still minus a splashback

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/06/2019 17:44

Why can't I see Linguphiles finished pictures?

northernruth · 11/06/2019 17:48

@soakedat3 yes we would have to organise the ikea stuff ourselves but I've done it before and Im not phased by that too much. Have a bit of a wobble today because most of the replacement door compnaies have plywood edges (very on trend) but I don't like them. I'd asked Plykea if they could wrap the edges in formica but they can't do all of them. I want a pale blue kitchen with a retro feel

Meanwhile I found out that Wren Kitchens are doing a new Macaroon collection of pastel units. I've always steered clear of big box retailers because I think they are overpriced and I hate the sales techniques (50% off then another 25% etc etc) but these units are LUSH so I'm now panicking!

@Hoppahouse I love your tile mood board, they are gorgeous

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/06/2019 17:52

Although I was pretty set on this colour scheme before joining this thread, it was pictures of @Hoppahouse kitchen that gave me confidence that it would work!

I looked into the Alusplash backslashes, but had almost rejected them as you can't use them horizontal on a windowssill. But designer pointed out that if I get a little quartz upstand as planned, it can cover the sill as it is only a few cm above worktop.
Then if I want, I can subsequently add the Alusplash if I want more colour. He said they've got some in their showroom but I probably saw it and assumed it was glass

Daphnesmate · 11/06/2019 18:35

Hello, I'd like to join. We are having a single storey kitchen/diner plus additional reception room. Foundations in (just before the heavy rain hit) and concrete base just gone in (currently covered with a large plastic sheet). I didn't think the builders would be able to continue in the rain but they seem to have made some progress. Irksome bit hasn't truly arrived yet. i.e. decamping to living room and having temporary makeshift kitchen arrangements - I think this might make go a bit crackers with 3 dc in the equation.
Most things sorted and falling into place - just a few things to sort now, so will be watching this thread with interest (and probably seeking some advice at some point).

Linguaphile · 11/06/2019 18:50

Oh how strange, I wonder why they aren’t showing! Here they are:

That is so beautiful! Did you post pictures before but without a splashback? It looks lovely!

lightlypoached · 11/06/2019 19:36

Been off sick today and been looking at kitchens.
We also got measured up today.
Inching forward Smile

TheFatberg · 11/06/2019 19:46

Linguaphile that's beautiful.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo we ended up ordering the Next lights you posted quite a few pages back so thank you for sharing them. We had £100 in Next vouchers too which meant we didn't have much to pay in cash.

soakedat3 · 11/06/2019 20:02

We had a set back today as the wrong sized joists were delivered so the floor didn't go down. Sigh. I think everyone was disappointed as a team of 3 builders came and then had to go. :( New Dad has given us "homework" of marking out what we want for lights and sockets... presumably to keep us busy!

Great kitchen @Linguaphile! Is that an extractor in your over the island box?

@Daphnesmate, I think your about the 3rd person who has had torrential rain after the foundations were laid recently. June was theoretically a good time to start... LOL!

I'm glad DH didn't make you U-turn to mahogany Wheredoes. What is it with guys and dark wood??

Not to cheat on our homework or anything but does anyone have any advice on placements of lights in the kitchen? The downlights I mean. We will have 3 pendants over the penninsula bfastbar and a pendant over the dining table.

avocuddl · 11/06/2019 20:05

Wow @Linguaphile love the kitchen!!
