Love the DIY kitchens showroom. We're having their Norton range

Oh lovely @4yearsnosleep ! What colour are you going for?

I think we're going for the Malton light grey and charcoal. Can't decide between light coloured worktops and oak. We have oak at the moment and it's a pain oiling etc but I do like the look of it. I was thinking even could have oak on the base units and light on the island (which is where the sink will be so most splashes)

We're having light grey and a custom colour island in midnight teal. We're having an oak breakfast bar attached to the granite on the island.

If your sink is on the island, I'd go for the configuration you've suggested. Worktop Express have lovely solid wood worktops, but also a great range of laminates that don't look laminate and the solid laminate thin worktops

Thanks for the neighbour advice. I think we will try and catch them this week to let them know.

Nice to hear about other doing 2 storey side extensions too! We have an exciting kitchen extension which will be incorporated into the new extension so not much foundations to dig out. The attic will be relatively simple too I think, with a dormer and a velux to add.

Hoppahouse · 21/03/2019 09:37

Ooh kitchen talk!
We're getting ours from a friend who supplies and fits kitchens. We're having handless doors and going for white on the wall units and charcoal on the island. I just haven't decided on the worktop yet.
We have the plasters coming next week and 4 weeks 3 weeks to go until the kitchen is installed 😅

Can anyone advise on the best thing to do with this wood (will be used as shelves and a sil) - should I varnish, wax or oil it?? 🤔

I prefer the middle worktop btw - just happens to be the most expensive 🙈

4yearsnosleep · 21/03/2019 10:15

@Hoppahouse Osmo Polyx Oil is what you want you can get it in multiple finishes

Love the kitchen design. Our screed is being poured tomorrow, but the kitchen won't be delivered until the 20th May

Thanks @avocuddl.

I really want to visit DIYKitchens showroom but have settled for requesting door samples. We are in Scotland so it's quite far away! Samples are really heavy! At the moment I am thinking grey linwood doors. Can't decide really and keep veering between grey and white with the occasional oggle at Carbon. I am tempted to put Carbon in the utility under the guise of dark hiding mud but really because I don't have to take DHs views into consideration there.

@4yearsnosleep I am also thinking of oak bbar onto our penninsular (not enough width for an island). Are you going for a raised one? And how will it look? DH has requested black granite so I think the contrast will be good but am not sure.

4yearsnosleep · 21/03/2019 10:43

@soakedat3 I'm also thinking carbon in the utility Smile

It'll be chunkier, 4cm at least depending on whether we go for oak or reclaimed wood. It was the DIY Kitchens show room that made us decide as they feature combination worktops quite a lot

soakedat3 · 21/03/2019 13:56

@4yearsnosleep I really like mixed worktops but for some reason when I mentioned it in another kitchen place (kitchen depot) they didn't know what I meant and I had to draw it. I am hoping for this kind of thing but as we're not near the details with builders yet I've no idea if it's a go or not.

Please post a pic of your Carbon utility when it's in. I really like the boldness of a dark door but wonder if instagram might not live up to real life! :D

Love that pic.

Utility will probably be vastly delayed so that we can afford all the finishes needed for the extension Grin

@Hoppahouse love the beam! Going to look beaut! Can I ask the materials/price differences between the worktop samples? I like the middle and the one of the far left.

How funny so many are going for DIY kitchens! I'll post my pics I took at the showroom, think I got one of Linwood if that helps in any way @soakedat3. I love that picture with oak breakfast bar!

I can't decide between all dark bottom units including the island and light wall units/tall cabinets. Or all light units around the edge and just dark island

Has anyone made a list of ALL things that might need to be budgeted for? From main build costs, kitchen, floor/fitting, light bulbs that kinda thing? I'm worried that I'm missing something big from my budget planning!

elasticfantastic · 21/03/2019 17:59

I wish I was that organised @avocuddl GrinGrin

elasticfantastic · 21/03/2019 18:00

That kitchen is lovely... where is this DIY kitchen place? Is it a chain? I'd not heard of it before MN.

Mydressinggownismybestfriend · 21/03/2019 18:18

A list like that is such a good idea. We haven’t started building yet but are very much winging it! I should try and think of every insidey bit we might need and price it up to get things a little more realistic!

NotPennysBoat · 21/03/2019 19:09

Hi all, can I join? We've submitted planning for a single storey rear extension, expect to hear by mid-April. I've had a builder (recommended by a good and very fussy friend) round to look at the job, he's referred me to a structural engineer to get a cost for the steels before he'll provide a quote. Structural engineer wants £1,500 for the job, which seems steep to me (I quote "there’s a lot of work ,stability frames ,steelwork ,masonry ,new foundations and underpinning existing foundations")... anyone have any views?

@avocuddl is that the carbon in the middle picture? I love the dark units with the white worktop. Hoping to go for a very dark blue (will have to be custom paint I think), but I've not seen it on any 'real' (ie non-Insta) kitchens!

WorrisomeHeart · 21/03/2019 19:28

We’re going for a DIY kitchen as well!!! Probably Carrera in Oval Room Blue (if I can convince DH 😂) I am going to see the showroom in May and can not wait.
The list I’ve made for the kitchen is as follows if it helps anyone!
Kitchen units
Sink
Taps
Waste disposal
Appliances - fridge, oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher
Lighting for task, main and dining/sitting area
Flooring
Worktops
Windows / doors
Inserts for drawers (probably going iKea as so much cheaper than DK)
Radiators
Boiler
Sockets - usb or not?
Bar stools / sofa
Soft furnishing
Veluxes - to blind or not to blind?!

I have loved using the DIY Kitchen planner especially the notes function which is really handy to plan where everything would go. I was desperate to fit in one of their corner pantries but just can’t manage it.

This is the current layout (terrible photo, sorry!)

WorrisomeHeart · 21/03/2019 19:29

Oh i should say - the big white rectangle is a double door pantry and the space next to it is a double oven /microwave stack. There are still some bugs in the planner!

soakedat3 · 21/03/2019 19:39

@NotPennysBoat I got the invoice for our structural engineer work yesterday. It was £696. I don't know if it makes a difference that we were waiting for the structural calculations and the SER certification before submission to planning. We are in Scotland and it's a single storey extension within permitted development. I'm not sure they need to be involved in foundations as was told it was for the steelwork to keep upstairs up. When I get the drawings I'll know more and will update here if you want.

@avocuddle those kitchens look so good! I really like the two tone units but am unsure if I can pull it off. Had thought maybe white top cabinets and grey bottom ones.

I have a spreadsheet... it doesn't include the main build but I have put in the prices of all the appliances I want - current ones literally have bits of plastic falling off,
floor tiles,
splashback options (can't decide on tiles or glass),
under cabinet lights,
sinks,
taps and waste fittings,
lights,
worktops
shelves
breakfast bar
fitting costs
utility drying racks

Keep having to add and looking at the final total reaching my max budget very quickly! I think if we don't go for DIYKitchens we may not actually manage to get many units at all!

soakedat3 · 21/03/2019 19:40

Oooh! Drawer inserts!!

avocuddl · 21/03/2019 19:40

@NotPennysBoat exciting! That does sound a bit steep, I'd imagine ours requires the same if not more for the two story bit and ours was £475 + vat.

I initially wanted dark blue, think it looks absolutely fabulous but fell in love with the carbon when I saw it in the show room

soakedat3 · 21/03/2019 19:43

@WorrisomeHeart - I didn't know they had double door pantry units! I am not sure we have the room but I am off to look at the site again.

WorrisomeHeart · 21/03/2019 19:47

Yep soaked@3 they do them in an 800, 900 and 1000 width I think - the 800 and 900 are shelves but the 1000 has pullout drawers at the bottom.

I found that if I used the search function it often brought up other units that didn’t display when I went through all the tabs - for example if you want a unit for a standalone microwave.
