£250k 2+beds where?

Where can I buy a house for £250k max with at least 2 beds. Nice location, preferably with good public transport. I live in the SE and this won't even buy me a bedsit where I live atm. I am finding it quite hard to search Rightmove by just price so would like ideas of location. London/Sussex and bits of kent are my only experience of property/location (apart from holiday destinations in the UK).

When my last child finishes their A levels next year I would love to move somewhere cheaper but naice.

Parts of the Forest of Dean are still very cheap. (Well, relatively)

Branleuse · 04/02/2018 08:53

im pretty sure you can in colchester, and thats still the SE

ElanorGamgee · 04/02/2018 08:58

I wouldn’t venture into Norfolk personally having lived in a very pretty Norfolk village near Norwich for a decade. It takes 75 mins on the train from Norwich to Cambridge or almost an hour to get to the A1 or M11 in a car.

Houses are much cheaper than where we moved to but the fact that it takes you an hour to leave the county in almost any direction is not good for visiting or visitors.

If you're not going to be driving, and will be completely reliant on public transport, look at one of the northern cities. Sheffield (the country's biggest village) has areas that feel rural, but are a short bus ride away from everything.

Phillipa12 · 04/02/2018 09:02

Parts of wiltshire will fit your criteria.

insancerre · 04/02/2018 09:20

From the public transport angle, I would avoid Norfolk and Suffolk and North Yorkshire
The north east has the best public transport of any region I have lived in

Woolfrai · 04/02/2018 09:24

Some parts of Lincolnshire can be great with public transport. With North East Lincolnshire, you can get a good house in a nice place for your budget. You'd be close to both the wolds (great for lovely walks) and the coast.

We are in a Harrogate village, this part of North Yorkshire has pretty decent train links. Harrogate to Leeds or Harrogate to York are both 30 mins, fine for commuting and then and open up the east coast mainline and cross Pennine route to west coast mainline if you want them.

We are going to Edinburgh at half term - 3hrs 15 mins from Harrogate with one change at York.

falang · 04/02/2018 09:29

Northumberland. Stunning scenery. Castles. Friendly people.

FennyBridges · 04/02/2018 09:30

Cornwall. Clays villages. Lovely location, although a pain for a supermarket (have to travel 20 mins).

ElanorGamgee · 04/02/2018 09:39

Ilkley is another place to consider OP with great transport links.

I think of ilkley as a smaller Harrogate for active folk. More expensive than Harrogate so smaller houses for your money but still a house with two three beds and a garden.

Tons going on there, we visit family there once a month and it is definitely on our list of potential places to move to once we no longer need to be in the school catchment area we are in.

Our list is fairly small though, we want to be in or on the edge of a town or city for our retirement, Ilkley or York, then last resort Harrogate.

Not currently Harrogate for us as we get older because it is not very cycle friendly, no thought to people using a bike for daily life.

I moved from London to Liverpool, love it here. I have a four bed terrace and paid £175k for it. 16 minutes on the train to the city centre, 10 minutes walk from the beach. Loads of local restaurants and bars and independent shops.

Another Shrewsbury one.

flumpybear · 04/02/2018 14:03

Nottingham .... two universities plus Leicester and derby are close enough to travel to
I love West Bridgford but some other areas are lovely too!

longtompot · 04/02/2018 14:03

You can get houses in south Wiltshire for that price. Where I am we have direct trains to London, Southampton, Bath, Bristol and Cardiff. Lots of buses as well. Where I live, I am a 10 min walk from the countryside and a leisurely 20 min walk to the city centre.

Laska5772 · 04/02/2018 14:24

Hey... its not that bad here on IOW! We have all the supermarkets (inc Lidl Aldi Asda, Tesco , Morrisons, sainsburys , waitrose ..)

Petrol hasn't been any cheaper in major supermarkets on mainland the last few times I've been over. (country petrol stations are a different matter, but are everywhere) .

But yes employment can be more difficult and often not paid so well as mainland (though I've been successfully employed in public sector since I've been here ) Yes there are 2 Cat B/C prisons (but you dont really notice them) and there are lots of other employers .

Schools haven't been very highly rated but OP doesn't need schools .

TalkinPeace · 04/02/2018 16:10

I knew Laska would pick me up !!!
The Island has definite up sides and indeed the OP is not worrying about schools
but the points I made are there to explain why house prices are so much lower than the other side of the Solent Grin

hotstepper4 · 04/02/2018 16:15

Where I live, Newhaven. It's a 40 min bus ride to Brighton and you can get a 2-3 bed for that price.

RedRobin87 · 04/02/2018 16:22

Norwich. Good links into London. Nice area, low crime rate, lots of countryside, etc.

We live in North Norfolk which is a bit more expensive than some other areas but you can still get a two bed for under £200k

Smellylittleorange · 04/02/2018 21:44

If were talking Islands noticed Hayling was a bit cheaper in parts the other day. Bottom of A3 towns quite cheap and goid rail links. Everyone raves abput Chichester but i just think its overpriced a bit twee and boring Hmm

Lucymek · 04/02/2018 21:49

Midlands.

lljkk · 04/02/2018 21:50

Most of North Norfolk is not naice .

Don't you need to work, OP? Some places are cheap b/c there are no jobs here.

RedRobin87 · 04/02/2018 22:08

@lljkk - and what parts would you deem not "naice"
