£250k 2+beds where?

Kikashi · 02/02/2018 22:57

Where can I buy a house for £250k max with at least 2 beds. Nice location, preferably with good public transport. I live in the SE and this won't even buy me a bedsit where I live atm. I am finding it quite hard to search Rightmove by just price so would like ideas of location. London/Sussex and bits of kent are my only experience of property/location (apart from holiday destinations in the UK).

When my last child finishes their A levels next year I would love to move somewhere cheaper but naice.

Norwich or Sheffield? Both about 2 hours by train from London. Both near some lovely countryside. Sheffield cheaper. Norwich nicer city centre. Sheffield nicer edges to the city.

This one is near me.

Canterbury? University town with lots going on. Easy access to the coast. Fast train to London. You can pick up extra money hosting foreign students on language courses.

AdalindSchade · 03/02/2018 08:01

You could definitely get a small house for that in worthing, littlehampton, newhaven

bigredboat · 03/02/2018 08:07

Portsmouth, Southampton and the towns in between.

Rumpledfaceskin · 03/02/2018 08:08

You’d definitely get that in some parts of the southwest too.

donajimena · 03/02/2018 08:11

Cardiff. Beautiful city! Near the sea, good transport. 250k would get you a lovely 2/3 bed

Chocolatecake12 · 03/02/2018 08:14

Ramsgate or Margate,
You could get a 2/3 bedroom house.
Great transport links to London and as a pp has said both towns have English language schools that have foreign students you could host for extra income.

We moved from London to Saltaire, West Yorkshire 2 years ago. No regrets. The transport is really great as there is a reliable trainline from Saltaire and Shipley. Only 15 minutes into Leeds and 10 to Bradford. We don't really do buses but don't need to. Taxis are cheap. We still haven't bought a car. You can get a nice 2 bed cottage in the village for just under £150k. For your budget you could get something bigger if you wanted. Bingley is also nice as is Ilkley although it's a different trainline. It's 30 minutes to Leeds from Ilkley. Skipton is also lovely.

Nice 3 bed in Saltaire. World Heritage Site!

gigi is right.,Saltaire could be perfect for you OP.

Another vote for Cardiff here! I grew up in Hampshire but moved to South Wales for work, then couldn't move back as house prices meant we'd barely afford a cardboard box back by my parents. We've got a lovely 3 bed house in a lovely area in the north of the city for less than £250k. You get the best of all worlds here- city life that's very close to some stunning countryside and you're on the coast if you like the sea.

Laska5772 · 03/02/2018 08:47

Isle of Wight .. you'd get something really nice here for that . Despite what people would have you believe if you are a resident and get residents tickets the ferries are not hugely expensive.. you can be in London in less than 2.5 hrs on train inc the ferry .

I moved from near Brighton several years ago and love it here..

Buglife · 03/02/2018 08:51

Norwich and Norfolk are nice. You could easily get a 2-3 bed near where I live in North Essex though, an hour into London in the rain and very near the coast. North Essex isn’t like South Essex which is basically London Suburb. Suffolk is nice too.

caperberries · 03/02/2018 08:58

Felixstowe?

Ashford could work for you. Smallish market town, good connections, near the coast, lots of housing stock. £250k for 2-3 beds is easily doable.

Pittcuecothecookbook · 03/02/2018 09:08

Houses in villages outside of Canterbury and in East Kent have great transport links to London. Try stations like Minster, Sturry (on the HS1 line), Herne Bay, Bekesbourne, Margate, birchington etc

Harrogate, you don’t need to drive, lots going on on your doorstep, or York, same scenario. You would easily find a job in York, or Leeds (short hop on train from Harrogate).

yogaginrepeat · 03/02/2018 09:23

Northern Ireland Grinyou could get a 4/5 bed detached with large garden in some areas!

yogaginrepeat · 03/02/2018 09:24

Ah I see @WeeBunnyFooFoo has said the exact same for Scotland 😂 devolved regions it is then!

Rents · 03/02/2018 09:25

Portsmouth and Southsea! You could get a 2 bed in the nice parts or a large 3 bed in the 'up and (never) coming', by the city is so compact it doesn't really matter

Nice enough area, but on a main road

ProseccoPoppy · 03/02/2018 09:32

How about Wells? (very nice and although small there is quite a bit going on so you wouldn’t have to drive if you weren’t up to it). Tbh you’d get something decent in quite a lot of Somerset for your budget.
