£250k 2+beds where?

Kikashi · 02/02/2018 22:57

Where can I buy a house for £250k max with at least 2 beds. Nice location, preferably with good public transport. I live in the SE and this won't even buy me a bedsit where I live atm. I am finding it quite hard to search Rightmove by just price so would like ideas of location. London/Sussex and bits of kent are my only experience of property/location (apart from holiday destinations in the UK).

When my last child finishes their A levels next year I would love to move somewhere cheaper but naice.

3 bed house lots of quaint cottages

snotato · 03/02/2018 15:12

My house is worth about £170,000.
I have a 3 bed semi detached with massive garden, and private parking.im in Plymouth.
I’m not in the nicest area of Plymouth, but certainly not in the worst.and I get along with all my neighbours except a mad broom lady.
We have a lovely Barbican and hoe.
Maybe worth a shot for you if you can stand our accent Grin

👋 hi hopping 😄

Cardiff is fab, but 250k would probably lead to compromise. Penarth is lovely. Almost a suberb with train link

Thank you again everyone. I have listed down all the suggestions. I can't believe your links at how lovely the houses are and the value for money. Not sure in London you could even get builders to do the refurbs for the price of some of these houses. I've been in the South too long.

I'm a bit surprised by how cheap IoW is. I took the children on holiday there many years ago and it was very lovely and our holiday cottage wasn't cheap at all. I love the sound of all stone towns like Malvern, Harrogate, Shropshire etc. Thanks for the Plymouth tip - I always kind of forget Devon as in my head it is "expensive" as I had a friend who moved to Thurlstone and her house was pretty expensive at the time.

It has made me realise how little of England I know - just the tourist hotspots of Dorset and Devon and again in Scotland and Wales I mainly know more tourist type places (the Gower, Aber, Brecon Edinburgh, Glasgow).

The Isle of Wight is cheap because
(a) there is no work there
(b) the schools are shite
(c) food is more expensive there because of the ferry
(d) one of the largest employers is HMP Isle of Wight

Lovely place to holiday, not to live as a family

weallhavedreams · 03/02/2018 18:26

Uckfield, heathfield, east grinstead? The first probably the best option for budget + being close to the ashdown forest/public transport to London, Brighton etc and having wonderful schools (if that's something you need)

AirandMungBeans · 03/02/2018 18:33

East anglia, we have a three bed semi, new kitchen, bathroom, playroom, summer house, big garden, in a nice area. We just had it valued at £235000.

5 beds, 1930s semi with garden and extension. North Shields, on the coast near Tynemouth. Nice place to live.

This one is really nice and in a quiet, smart bit of North Shields.

RaySwan · 03/02/2018 18:43

You can get a 4 bed detached in Durham for £250k in a nice area.

gillybeanz · 03/02/2018 18:45

Lots of nice places in Cheshire would get you 3 bed, and Lancs you could buy a large 4 bed detached, with land for that price.

Janek · 03/02/2018 19:02

Coventry - you won't get a stone cottage, but you can get to/from London in just over an hour...

CMOTDibbler · 03/02/2018 19:15

I live in South Worcestershire, and you can get a 3 bed semi for that budget. And we have a direct train line to London - £50 return, takes 2 hours due to stopping at every village till Oxford

gruber · 03/02/2018 19:25

If you said you liked small towns but good links, how about North Walsham (Norfolk)? It’s a decent sized town, train and bus links to Norwich but only a few miles from coast.

flirtygirl · 03/02/2018 20:16

Solihull, good town for shopping, good schools, great amenities and transport links. You can get 2 beds and some nice 1930s semi for your budget.

DarthNigel · 04/02/2018 07:41

Stansted-that seems specific but I was out looking st just these sort of properties yesterday with my friend who had the same budget-also Dunmow, and some more rural Essex villages...

AutumnalTed · 04/02/2018 07:43

Bexhill? Crow borough?

Chattette · 04/02/2018 07:50

Loads of places in the north east. You could buy a lovely 3-4 bed house for your budget. Darlington is on a main train line or other towns like Middlesbrough and Stockton?

headoutofthesand · 04/02/2018 08:02

Do you think your children and nieces will stay in the south? If so, I would try to. PIL live in Yorkshire & that is definitely a weekend away, ideally a long weekend. Going to see aunt on Kent coast is just a day trip ... leave around 10.30, get there for lunch, walk or trip to the beach, snack for the DC & then home. Especially now the DC are at school fitting in day trips to relatives/friends is so much easier than entire weekends and my DC are relatively low maintenance at weekends having just one, cheap activity each which can easily be missed. And, to take it even further, DH is the DCs father & we all live together permanently. Friends who only get the DC every other weekend struggle even more with weekend trips to see family (although are only responsible for their own half of the family I suppose).

glitterballbag · 04/02/2018 08:13

In Swale in Kent you could definitely get a place
