£250k 2+beds where?

Kikashi · 02/02/2018 22:57

Where can I buy a house for £250k max with at least 2 beds. Nice location, preferably with good public transport. I live in the SE and this won't even buy me a bedsit where I live atm. I am finding it quite hard to search Rightmove by just price so would like ideas of location. London/Sussex and bits of kent are my only experience of property/location (apart from holiday destinations in the UK).

When my last child finishes their A levels next year I would love to move somewhere cheaper but naice.

@GemmaB78 has beaten me to it...check out the East Riding of Yorkshire. Lovely little market towns and I can be in York, Leeds, and Hull in an hour or less, same with Coast, Moors and Wolds. We work in York but get so much more house for our money now we live between Hull and York. 2 year old, 5 bed detached, with garage, large garden and nice area £290k. Here's an example of a 4 bed within your price range www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-50006442.html

Mupflup · 03/02/2018 09:41

You'd get a 3 bed in a nice area for that round here (South Wales)

RaspberryBeret34 · 03/02/2018 09:52

Cheltenham? It’s 2 hrs in the train to London, you can get a decent 2/3 bed for 250k and there are lots of lovely areas.

Poppyfields21 · 03/02/2018 09:53

Another vote for Canterbury. Great access to London and the coast and some gorgeous little cottages for the £250k mark. All local amenities on your doorstep and plenty more going on too!

Kikashi · 03/02/2018 10:02

Never heard of Saltaire - the link to the house in Shipley is lovely. Thank you so much everyone for all the advice and links - all the houses have their good points. Feel very positive now that I can get something nice somewhere nice - so many good leads. I especially like the stone cottages.

I would definitely look at County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear for that budget. You'll get at least a 3 bed if not also 4 bed detached in some places!

angularmerkel · 03/02/2018 10:09

North Yorkshire - Scarborough, Whitby, Filey you'd get loads for your money up there. Plus Coventry uni's campus at Scarborough are always looking for tutors if you wanted to keep your hand in.

Market Harborough, Leics. It has a station, 1 hr to London, loads of independent shops as well as smaller chains, cafes, restaurants, leisure facilities and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
For a city buzz the train is 15 mins to central Leicester, big shops, museums etc.
Also quick to get to M1 & M69.
You would just get a 3/2 bed for your budget, but it is v. Popular and one of the highest price rising areas.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 03/02/2018 10:18

The Medway or Thanet. Direct (although fairly slow) train link to London.

RaininSummer · 03/02/2018 10:20

Many parts of Devon. My house is four bed and only about 210,000.

MadameJosephine · 03/02/2018 10:21

I second Harrogate, in fact I was about to link to the very same house as Elanorgamgee!

nic14271213 · 03/02/2018 10:21

You can get a 4-5 bed near me in Derbyshire !

ElanorGamgee · 03/02/2018 11:24

Josephine I think that Harrogate is really good value in that price bracket for living in such a vibrant, nice place with transport links and the Dales on your doorstep.

We need more room than that and the prices seem to increase out of proportion in relation to space.

Footle · 03/02/2018 11:48

Another vote for Norwich.

runningtogetskinny · 03/02/2018 14:19

You'd get a lovely terrace in East Boldon just a few miles from Newcastle and less than 3 miles from the beach. It's also on the Metro line, I love it here

VelvetSpoon · 03/02/2018 14:27

If you prefer to stay in the South, then the Isle of Wight is a fantastic idea. Everything is nearby because of the fact its an island! Prices are really cheap, I know several people who are looking to move there once they reach mid fifties/ early 60s. Plus you're only a short trip from Portsmouth. Definitely worth a look.

Alternatively I would suggest Shropshire of you're willing to go a little further afield. Shrewsbury is lovely and you could get a great house or bungalow for about £200k. Telford is cheaper even than that but not as nice.

I'll try and find a few properties...

ExpectingToFly · 03/02/2018 14:29

Folkestone for sure! It's only 45 mins on HS1 to Stratford and 52 to kings x (approx). Sandy beach, lots of regeneration, old town, the harbour arm, the leas coastal park. Good schools. You can defo get what you need for 250k and it's a great investment

Pattyandbump · 03/02/2018 14:35

What about Herne Bay in Kent? Easy walk to the beach and regular buses into Canterbury city centre. High speed train into London too.

Something like this is well within budget. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-52823859.html

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2018 14:37

Salisbury?

Bluesheep8 · 03/02/2018 14:45

Bikerunski, I was going to say Huddersfield area too. Lovely villages and great transport links.

VelvetSpoon · 03/02/2018 14:55

hopefully this link works

Could do with redecoration but at £170k there's room to do that. And a handy downstairs shower room.

Can't believe how cheap the IoW is!

Delphinius · 03/02/2018 14:57

Just had my good size Victorian terrace 2 up / 2 down with big garden valued at £220k in Southsea, Hants.

TheImprobableGirl · 03/02/2018 15:04

there’s a lovely littleish town near me called Malvern, beautiful walking etc, there are loads of nature-y hikes and also the malvern hills, and great transport links! 15 mins regular bus ride to nearest bigger city (Worcester) and near m5 for visitors, not massively near the sea but burnham-on-sea and is only 1hr away, weston supermare 1.5-2hrs : lots of coach trips if that’s your sort of thing!
Lots of natural heritage, culture etc and then you’ve got Birmingham 45 mins away if you need a bigger city!

mummyhaschangedhername · 03/02/2018 15:05

South Wales .. the further west you go the Cheaper it gets, although ideally no further than Swansea for good transport links. £250,000 can you get a huge 4 bed easily.

VelvetSpoon · 03/02/2018 15:06

A Shrewsbury one too
