Kitchen fitting has started today so no sink, no cooker! We have microwave ready meals for tea!

Blighted by the fact the plumber had to drill up half the floor to find the gas pipe to seal off the old pipe to the gas hob! Still it’s giving me a-bit longer to get my work tops oiled! 😬

And another twatchops fuck up seems to be coming to light! We have a gap between the screened floor, the internal bricks & external, The company doing our floor were going to sort it out but now not sure they can, they want Building Regs people to see it first! Sigh!

HideHide · 20/11/2017 18:31

ok, so turns out the Corian we wanted is now on delay until after Chrismas! Torn between saying stuff it and waiting (Its the last piece of the puzzle for pre christmas finish) or choosing something else…….
What would you do??

extentionmadness · 20/11/2017 18:33

believe I think builders are just so pissed off and they don't trust her. she's unlikely to let them in to have a look at what is actually up there and I think that putting the price up was partly trying to convince us not to do it. Now he's been told about the brackets he is even less keen. Given her behaviour I don't blame him to be honest.

We all think it's her that reported us to planning enforcement. I'm so frustrated, we only have about 2-3 weeks left of work and we're done, but they can't risk moving forward until we get the all clear from planning.

Argh, we're so close and I'd even moved loads of stuff in preparation for it and now I don't get my lovely hotel stay Sad

whattodo I'd definitely enjoy the silly season before the proper madness and mess starts!!

DustandRubble · 20/11/2017 18:38

FFS TeamRick. What a mess he has made. Exciting about kitchen though.

Tika we put lots of stuff in storage as we needed to clear the rooms for the building work, even though we were not planning to move out. We didn’t have enough space to store it in the house.

TeamRick · 20/11/2017 18:55

Hide difficult decision! Are you hosting Christmas?
Is there anything else you like as much?

I think I’d be tempted to wait! ( but I’ve obviously got used to waiting! 😞

DustandRubble · 20/11/2017 19:07

namedychangedy we are getting under unit lighting as I think it makes a real difference. Our electrician is supplying it as he has better quality stuff than our kitchen supplier does.

DustandRubble · 20/11/2017 19:09

I would wait Hide, you are going to be living with this kitchen for years. Unless you can find something else that you like equally so you don’t secretly resent it.

extentionmadness · 20/11/2017 19:19

Oops, posted too soon!!

hide I'd also wait as it's going to be in for years. Is there anything you can use temporarily over Christmas?

Rick hope that are you not going to be uncovering to many more twatchops fuck ups!

Tika77 · 20/11/2017 20:11

HideHide I’d probably wait for the right thing. Cannyou get a temporary worktop?

Tika77 · 20/11/2017 20:14

Extension I feel for you. Even a good relationship with neighbours can go down because of extension works... and people can be so petty.

Believeitornot · 20/11/2017 20:57

@HideHide post Christmas isn’t too bad. You could ring other places - we are getting recycled glass which takes about 3 weeks. But I would wait and stick some MDF down for now. It’ll be worth it.

@TeamRick we had a gap between the screed and wall because they had to wait for the sliding doors to go in before filling the gap. The builders then filled it when doors were fitted.

TeamRick · 20/11/2017 23:10

Believe I think it’s something to do with that too but the company who are doing it in the absence of twatchops were concerned about the air bricks and stuff! So we’ll get Building Regs to check it out!

whiskyowl · 21/11/2017 07:47

hide - how would you feel about another worktop? If you'd always be a bit sad you didn't have your Corian, I would wait. If you look at quartz or Dekton and think "ooh, this is the perfect excuse" I'd switch!! Grin

rick - It reminds me of the opening of Stonehenge by Spinal Tap.

In ancient times,
Hundreds of years before the dawn of history
Lived a strange builder, the Twatchops
No one knows who his was or what he was doing
But his legacy remains

I think the building regs thing might work in your favour if you do have to take the wanker through the small claims court. So it's probably worth waiting for, though I appreciate how much you must just want to crack on at this point in time.

extension - that sounds worrying about your neighbour's chimney. Is there any work-around that would still allow you to have what you want? Can you explain the concept/idea so we can try to think of alternatives?

Undercupboard lighting - you can get LED strips that are just AMAZINGLY thin. They're barely the width of a fabric tapemeasure and they just stick on. You need to hide a driver in a cupboard. I'm having one under an upstand nosing.

Question for those of you with modern open plan spaces - what lighting did you use? In the existing house I have a couple of white downlighting pendants, but I think they now feel too low and look weird. I don't want to replace them with spots, but I think I need something closer to the ceiling. Gah, I'm rubbish at lighting!

NamedyChangedy · 21/11/2017 10:27

Thanks whisky I’ll look out for led strips. I haven’t ordered them from the kitchen company as they don’t appear to be the best value. I’m hoping they can be retrofitted as I actually need to find a new electrician anyway. Yours sounds good Dust - you’re not in London are you? But I suppose anyone good will be booked up till Christmas...

I ended up ordering tiles in a bit of a panic last night, am really hoping they work with everything else. Now berating myself and wondering why I didn’t have samples ready for months beforehand. I think I could have done with hiring an interior designer, I clearly haven’t approached any of this in the best way.

whiskyowl · 21/11/2017 11:08

namedy - yes, I imagine your electrician will be able to do them cheaper. I am sure your tiles will be fine, everything else you've chosen has been lovely, and no evidence of needing any kind of interior design assistance! Put up a picture and we can admire. Grin

HideHide · 21/11/2017 12:16

Phew, just been over to the suppliers and chosen an alternative colour (in the best light with a bit of a squint it’s EXACTLY the same?!)
And bonus points as it’s in the lower pricing band so I’ve saved a fair whack too! Fired earth here I come 🙌🏻👏🏼

Believeitornot · 21/11/2017 12:22

@NamedyChangedy we ordered tiles in a similar fashion. I couldn’t believe it because dh is normally quite careful and just said yes!

They arrive Friday. What did you go for? We’ve gone for grey gloss

TeamRick · 21/11/2017 17:33

Positive update from me!

I have a utility room with a working sink, washing machine & dryer!

The cat has moved in!

TeamRick · 21/11/2017 17:37

Whisky I love that, made me really laugh! 😂😂😂

whiskyowl · 21/11/2017 17:43

Brilliant, Rick!!

It's been up and down today. While my builder is absolutely brilliant - cool, calm, collected - my electrician is definitely not. Confronted with anything new, there is much sucking of teeth and speaking of 'problems'. I told him that the wall lights needed to be wired a specific way - TWICE - but he didn't listen, and as a result I had to race across the city and buy a second driver. He's a nice bloke, he's just very old school.

The windows are also delayed - it's now Thursday, not tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath. Sad The plasterer is also not around as much this week as I'd hoped, but he's coming back next week and the following to crack on. The stuff won't take long to dry as it's a really thin skim coat over plasterboard, so hopefully I'll still be able to crack on with some decorating over Christmas.

On the upside, the recessed spotlights are in, as are the recessed wall lights. And the hall may be less expensive than I'd envisaged because the plaster which sounded blown is actually welded to the wall and so a different kind of approach is needed - some kind of render and then skim. Plus, it looks like we may be full steam ahead for at least some - not all - of the kitchen to be fitted by Christmas (I still think this is a bit optimistic).

I'm bidding on a new dining table on Ebay. God knows where I'm going to put it if I actually win it.

Titsywoo · 21/11/2017 19:15

I ended up having similar with my bathroom tiles namedy. I had all these great ideas but couldn't decide so left it for ages then when the builder said I need them soon I got some samples and he said those won't work (odd shaped shower because of the slope of the ceiling in loft). I think I quite like what I chose even though it was rushed but I don't think I'll really know until they are all up - then it is too late!

NamedyChangedy · 21/11/2017 21:28

Erm @Believeitornot I’ve also gone for grey gloss tiles in the kitchen! Now wondering whether you mentioned that before and I’ve subconsciously copied?!? That, or we share a brain!

For the downstairs bathroom walls I’ve just got plain old white metro tiles, but flat. I haven’t chosen a paint colour yet so I figured they’d go with anything. And they were super cheap! Will probably pair with a light grey grout.

@Titsywoo let’s hope we’ve all made good choices. I imagine that once the builders have gone we’ll be too relieved to care about tiles!

@TeamRick is that all your utility room? It’s absolutely massive! Our washing machine got plumbed back in at the weekend - it’s been such a luxury (and time saver) not having to make trips to the launderette!!

Believeitornot · 21/11/2017 21:42

@NamedyChangedy haha no way! Great minds clearly Wink no the grey gloss was a change of mind on a whim. I’d originally planned for white tiles but decided grey because all white seemed too much. We’ve gone for grey gloss chevron tiles....

@TeamRick jealous of the utility!!!!

We are at the tricky stage. Boxes of kitchen stuff piled all over the house as we don’t really have a proper kitchen.

I feel like we have too much stuff 🙈

TeamRick · 21/11/2017 21:54

Name yes it is! It is a very luxurious utility room, I know! I bloody love it! ❤️❤️
