Selling in Silicon Valley - Want to come along for the wild ride?

I'm prepping my house for sale in Silicon Valley, California - just south of San Francisco. The property market is completely insane. It is astonishing who can actually pay these prices - especially when you realize that most purchases are cash. That's right, cash. With no contingencies and no chain.

Will be chronicling the madness of this sale here. I will then be purchasing a smaller (cheaper we hope) property nearer to SF. They say 'good luck with that. Feel free to join in, or simply ignore. Should be very interesting.

Wow! What a nightmare experience, so glad it turned out well!

another20 · 31/10/2017 14:59

Thats fantastic news. Such a relief - a great house. Have you any immediate plans for it - or does it work perfectly for you as it is?

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/10/2017 15:28

Hurrah! Congratulations. All hail Julian of Norwich Grin

2017SoFarSoGood · 31/10/2017 15:41

Yes, bowing to the great Julian!

There is literally nothing to do except replace the ugly chandeliers. It has newish floors, windows, electrical etc. Beautifully maintained. Will probably pull out the hot tub after DGSs get one dip. Although told the eldest only naked people are allowed which may dampen his ardor. 😝.

DH is handling the wire transfer today. Twas lovely being millionaires for a moment.

Happy Halloween. 38 years ago today I arrived in this country. 30 years ago today we moved into our first new build home. 10!years ago today I was offered this job which is a dream job. Today. Well. I suspect this counts as a Treat! 💖

Wallywobbles

Would you consider sharing your priocess in France? It is so interesting to learn how it works in other places.

Sofar just what I was wondering, too. It'd be interesting to see how France do house buying and selling. Please do share Wally

Huge congratulations on your new home sofar, make sure your hot tub is serviced by a pool engineer before using. My nephew has his own pool services business here in UK and the yuck factor of hot tubs put me off for life.

Dafspunk · 31/10/2017 18:56

Woohoo, just saw the good news! Congratulations 2017 - so pleased for you. And thanks very much for sharing the process - it’s been so interesting, I’ve been hooked.

2017SoFarSoGood · 31/10/2017 19:10

Thank you all. I'm hoping never th have to do this again 😝 so now we need to follow others in the process.

DH is at the bank wiring the money right now. Poor (ish) again but happy. We actually feel like this is a better home so we win all round.

Big enough for an MN get together!

Yaay! So happy it's all worked out. It's been very interesting following your experience - so very different from the UK (nothing is moving round us at the moment - never mind going for $250K more than asking Shock).

I'd love to hear Wally's experience of selling in France.

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/10/2017 22:30

Big enough for an MN get together!

Right. Booking my ticket Grin

And yes, as furlined says, it happened on Halloween! Proof positive that woo is a definite thing!

What a thread! Just read it all. Many congratulations from over here in Edinburgh. ✨✨✨

2017SoFarSoGood · 31/10/2017 23:35

Thank you Boo. Wave to my mama over in Dundee please. She is desperately waiting for someone in the family with the means to show her the pictures of the house (she doesn't do computers despite us buying and setting up several laptops over the years) so that she can see where her room is. Have to send her the actual brochure so she can show off to her pals in the clubby Smile

great news 2017!

I think the buying and selling process is stressful everywhere but at least in your case it's been done so quick! I put my house on the market around the same time as you and we are still doing viewings!

I hope the new house is as amazing to live in as it looks Smile

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/11/2017 23:17

Do people over there give their houses names? Because 'Hingy Hangy' would be the perfect name for the new house.

PickAChew · 01/11/2017 23:41

Just caught up with this thread. I would say i can't believe you sold so easily but are struggling to buy (a whole month looking?!!!!!) but it really seem to be a seller's market where you are!

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/11/2017 21:50

What a relief. House purchase is completed (offer accepted Monday evening) and just got the official "sale is recorded and now closed' notice, so we are now:

  1. Home owners (again)
  2. Landlords (albeit without payment from former owners
  3. Squatters (in our former home, thanks new owners)

Feels good. Now for the most important decision of all. What does the new couch look like and when we find it, will they hold it until Move in day on January 5? Now that's a hard one!

2017SoFarSoGood · 19/12/2017 23:06

hello out there TooSleepy and anyone else still around!

Well, the update is we are surviving in a hotel suite (sounds way fancier than it is in actuality!) but are truly in the run up to moving into our new home. We got smart, and went to UK for three weeks; was cheaper to fly non-cattle class and spend wildly, than to pay for crappy hotel. Was great spending time with family even in the snow and ice and rather chilly (!!!) far north. Loved every minute. First day back at work and have to say I'm enjoying it so maybe I've finally lost that last marble...

DH and I just exchanging emails on when new furniture should be delivered . We used this house move to get all new living room and family room furniture and a new mattress for our bed - and when movers bring all the shite important stuff currently in three storage units. I know we now have to do another major cull, but it made sense at the time to wait until we actually knew what new house would be like before abandoning all of it. The garage shall be full to the gunnels until we do that, but it is not coming upstairs if I can help it!

Our 'tenants' have been in Hawaii for two weeks. Feels like a cheat us not there NOR them there.

Christmas in a hotel will be interesting. We have no oven, but do have a dishwasher and two ring hob. Shall be fun to see what we eat, especially since I've asked DS and family to join us Grin I'm planning to go twig/branch rustling soon to make some semblance of tree with baubles and lights. Saw one at a friend's house and loved it. We'll see what that turns out like.
