Selling in Silicon Valley - Want to come along for the wild ride?

I'm prepping my house for sale in Silicon Valley, California - just south of San Francisco. The property market is completely insane. It is astonishing who can actually pay these prices - especially when you realize that most purchases are cash. That's right, cash. With no contingencies and no chain.

Will be chronicling the madness of this sale here. I will then be purchasing a smaller (cheaper we hope) property nearer to SF. They say 'good luck with that. Feel free to join in, or simply ignore. Should be very interesting.

Oh, sorry to hear that - it's so annoying.

(what does hingy hengy hingy hengy mean??)

2017SoFarSoGood · 17/10/2017 15:36

We could have upped the offer but I I'm afraid I was so put off with the whole transaction I was done. It's over. I don't believe there were other better offers but they really wanted an extra 45 days of free rent back. It makes no sense to give them more money and then pay for us to go into a rental instead of them. So. Over.

We have 25 more days. Have agreed if we find nothing we shall book an extended stay hotel, to allow for the cat coming too. We are also getting an estimate from our movers to do am interim pick up and store for the duration. Then we shall go with the flow.

That's our plan. Let's see. Eek.

Oh dear. The black beetle house sold for $267,000 over asking price. This does not bode well!!!!

Snowgirl the reference comes from Bore wishing me well with her version of "whits afore ye shall ne'er gang ahent ye" and my telling the tale of my good American friend who has adopted it - somewhat - and at board meetings will quite seriously interject 'hingy hengy hingy hengy, you know!" whilst looking all stern and knowing. She believes she is saying it exactly as she should Grin

Shocked at that 2017

I didn't like it.

Oh heck. But don't worry the right one will come along.

DeadDoorpost · 19/10/2017 20:49

I had to come and find this thread to see if there had been a good update. Hopefully you'll find something soon. It's been interesting learning how it works in the USA

2017SoFarSoGood · 20/10/2017 00:53

No good update, sad to say. After weeks of his popping like chicken pox there is nothing out there! I'm sad. And a tad scared to be honest.

Sent DH to look at an entirely unsuitable home today. Then another. Neither meet any of our criteria.

Must not panic buy.

Really though that's pathetic. Worst case scenario we go to a hotel for a few weeks. One with a kitchen and two rooms. Pet friendly. DH is pushing me to just book it so that I can sleep again, but it's about $100 a night cheaper if you book the non refundable, which I will do nearer the tiime. 22 more days.

Eek.

My mantra for so many of life's situations is from that wise old bird, Julian of Norwich:

'All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well'

Sort of a medieval version of 'hingy hangy hingy hangy'

Bore you have a lovely way of making me believe thank you.

So another one popped up just before sleepy time last night. The decor and design is horrendous but the location and space seem ideal. It is possible our eyes will bleed but perhaps we shall be able to see beyond the current... Not sure what to call it.

Hate a hot tub. Rats love them, and ivy, so both on my hell no list.

Shall go see this later today this..*

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/10/2017 16:58

Now that has good bones!

I also hate hate hate hot tubs

A light sprinkling of woo for the visit...

Well have to tell you that your woo is the best EVER. Two more really good options just came up. None will let us in before the open house tomorrow afternoon BUT all are contenders. Whew. I was freaking out the last two days. However, now I'm a happy cat again Grin

Here are the other two:

DH fave
my fave!

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/10/2017 19:00

Ooh! Like both of those but slight preference for your fave too.

2017SoFarSoGood · 20/10/2017 19:15

persuaded them to let us in to MY FAVE this afternoon at 2:00. I'm going to be useless at work between now and then. I have a feeling. A good feeling.

HipToBeSquare · 20/10/2017 19:23

OMG Bore I need some of your woo too please! Have our 1st second viewing tomorrow after so many viewings and I'm actually really nervous Blush

I really liked your dh's fav 2017 but not keen on the no backyard fence thing.

But your fav is amazing and you have to buy it! and then invite all on this thread to your house warming

I'm from Australia and those houses remind me of home.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 20/10/2017 19:27

i like the first - the views are fab

the third looks lovely and friendly :)

2017SoFarSoGood · 20/10/2017 19:44

Thank you Furlined - love that you see my fave as friendly. That's exactly what I feel!

Hip best of luck tomorrow. I strongly recommend the special recipe of Bore WOO - it is truly the magic sauce methinks. We are so lucky, but don't tell anyone else

Whatever house I get you folks are invited. You've been lifesavers so far, keeping me semi-sane through this madness!

HipToBeSquare · 20/10/2017 19:58

Thanks Bore, I'll let you know how it goes Smile

We'll all be checking back in by 10.30 pm here 2017 for an immediate update on your viewing.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 20/10/2017 20:33

awww - lovely

2017SoFarSoGood · 20/10/2017 23:55

Hmmm.

My fave is beautiful outside. Perfect location. Marvelous back yard. Wonderful light. Loads of space.

Kitchen needs pulling out. Not an emergency but pretty old and useless. Been painted and tiles replaced but old. No walk in shower. Tons of room to put one in. Looks like quite a bit of work needs done. I still quite love it. DH not keen at all.

Little one he loved is in poor location. A tiny bit rough. Not for me. Off the list.

Our least favorite is in a nice place and look excellent from the outside. Shall visit tomorrow. Let's see how that goes.

OP posts:
furlinedsheepskinjacket · 21/10/2017 00:11

i like the outlook on that one :) hope the visit goes well

toldmywrath · 21/10/2017 08:40

Take your Mexico medal with you for added woo. I must say that I have enjoyed finding out the California way of house buying and selling. Envious of the huge rooms and views. Not envious of the price tags!

Good luck OP!

2017SoFarSoGood · 21/10/2017 20:38

Oh Toldmy that is genius. I shall secret it on my person. Portable woo.

My agent had a really great observation. Each of the homes we have fallen for are small versions of our current house. She is right! Perhaps habit.

Getting ready mentally for today.

OP posts:
2017SoFarSoGood · 21/10/2017 23:43

Holy mackerel it's the dream home. Shoot. Is already priced at the high end of our asking so doesn't leave us as much room to wiggle but we both agree this is the one we empty the coffers for.

A million times nicer in the flesh than the pictures show. So lovely. Impeccably finished.

They are not taking offers until after next weekend. This is killing me.

shocked.
