Selling in Silicon Valley - Want to come along for the wild ride?

I'm prepping my house for sale in Silicon Valley, California - just south of San Francisco. The property market is completely insane. It is astonishing who can actually pay these prices - especially when you realize that most purchases are cash. That's right, cash. With no contingencies and no chain.

Will be chronicling the madness of this sale here. I will then be purchasing a smaller (cheaper we hope) property nearer to SF. They say 'good luck with that. Feel free to join in, or simply ignore. Should be very interesting.

Offering 117k over asking. 3 day close. Free rent back til November 7. Our agent said it sounds great. Let it be good enough.

Feeling the woo. 😍

Oh dear this waiting is killer. I have no patience and so much rides on this next hour or two. Please let their agent be on the ball. And persuasive.

Very strange having to show these strangers the balance in our bank account. I understand the need to show we have the funds but it also shows how much more we could be pushed to spend.

Well hell. The agent just told ours that he could not present our offer tonight because the sellers are out of town. Why make us write one then? He told our agent 'go' in a text. What the heck?

Looks like he was playing us. Now we've shown our hand he can get others to outbid. Shoot. I'm really furious.

If this is the case your agent should have known better......but no one has you in an arm lock forcing you to buy it -- I am sure the there will be another one coming along shortly....dont panic - dont overpay -otherwsie you have defeated the object of moving.

Fascinating thread 2017
I remember selling my lovely home in Florida.
It was over Christmas and the realtor was doing handstands because she just didn't realise how long the Christmas holiday went on for.
I had to get something notarised and was in uk and she was panicking in case the buyers pulled out.

I can only imagine how stressful it's all been for you . However the price of houses 😱
Omg...in Florida when I sold you could have got the one you're thinking of buying for about $300 to $400k

PerfectlyPooPoo · 16/10/2017 16:00

I've mentally moved on from our house too 2017 and we haven't even sold it yet! Grin

Now that I've decided I'm going I just want out.

2017SoFarSoGood · 16/10/2017 16:20

Thank you good people for helping me through this. Another your words are very wise. I shall try to heed them.

Perfect it is very twilight zone like. How marvelous (or terrible) that our minds can switch gear so seamlessly.

I'm now thinking we shall hear nothing today, while cheat agent fishes for a better offer.

Hope it is a typical crazy Monday in the office so I can stop raging.

Now they are meeting at 1:30 to review offer. I bet it is offers that he collected between ours and this afternoon. I hate lying toads and that is what this man appears to be.

Your powerful WOO is reassuring, dear Bore

well got a text:

counter coming in....

Eek. Let's see what they want now.

OP posts:
2017SoFarSoGood · 17/10/2017 00:01

Counter is three things:

  1. A longer time to close (why - why would you not want money sooner?)
  2. additional 35k
  3. additional 30 days free rent back. (but we'd have to pay for a hotel / air bnb / rental for that whole time! and have our cat somewhere, again costing more money.

Cheeky. They want it all. I am so damned torn. Gut says give them $15k extra and tell them to use it for a hotel. Then done. Nothing else.

Lazy bastard did not even write the counter down. We've said until we get something in writing it does not exist.

DH is not happy with me since I'm getting rather loud and sweary Angry

2017SoFarSoGood · 17/10/2017 02:15

To top it all the counter offer expires in 3 hours from sending.

Have counter counted.

17.5k extra extra, 7 day close and not an extra minute of rent back.

Expires at 10 pm. Will me 3 hours on the nose.

I'm so done with this it will be a relief to move on. Either way. Tonight this is done.

OP posts:
2017SoFarSoGood · 17/10/2017 02:16

Be. Will be 3 hours.

another20 · 17/10/2017 11:29

What a shame. What happens now? Could you up the offer - do you want to? Or does it mean that it has gone to a higher bidder?

How much longer can you stay in your existing home? Can you extend this? Or will you be looking a short term rental?
