Kieron79 - could you tell me what flooring you have? It's beautiful!!

Kieron79 · 13/07/2015 20:27

Yeah sure, it's by a company called natures own and is an engineered oak, we deliberated for ages over wood or tiles but are really pleased we went for wood as feels so much warmer

Watergirl1 · 13/07/2015 20:29

Mandy214, it's a natural stone called calacatta brazil quartzite. It's hardwearing like granite but looks more like marble.

tinyeyes123 · 13/07/2015 20:40

Watergirl and Kieron: please can you let me know where you your units from? They're both beautiful kitchens, super jealous!
Are you finding the pale worktops ok? I love them but have staining fears!

Kieron79 · 13/07/2015 20:46

Kitchen is from Wren kitchens (Linda Barker Range), there are some horror stories on here but I have to say I can't fault them (nor could our builder). Really pleased with quartz worktop, it hides a multitude of sins as looks clean even when not and us v durable, we can put pans straight into it from the hob

MrsFlorrick · 13/07/2015 22:08

Watergirl. Your quartzite looks amazing!! I've got carrara and it's excellent but very interested to hear about yours.

How was it price wise and where did you get it?

ReallyNotAMorningPerson · 13/07/2015 22:25

Watergirl another one who'd love to know where you got your kitchen from. It's just fab!

Kiwi I also liked your retro yellow kitchen though I appreciate close up it must've looked a bit grotty in real life!

MrsMarigold · 13/07/2015 22:46

Ha. Contemplated posting our kitchen on for a laugh - it has rotting worktops... and an architect laughed at it.

Selks · 13/07/2015 23:40

Sidge, I love your pale green glass work tops, were they expensive? And where did you get them from? I'd love some.

Sidge · 14/07/2015 06:23

Thanks Selks I love my work tops, they look stunning and we're just what I wanted.

They weren't cheap, about the same as granite, quartz or silestone would have been. I think we managed to get all the work tops and splash backs done (kitchen and utility) for £4k, but there's a lot of glass!

I wouldn't recommend the company we used, they were based in Slough and were completely incompetent. Hmm.

Sidge · 14/07/2015 06:24

Were not we're. Stupid autocorrect.

Watergirl1 · 14/07/2015 07:59

I'm really pleased with the quartzite, I nearly went with marble but was worried about staining with young children. It was pretty much the same price as engineered Quartz like silestone. It hasn't stained or etched at all and is apparently very heat resistant (although I haven't been brave enough to put hot pans on it). The only issue is some watermarks around the butler sink which dry out easily. I used MKW surfaces but picked the stone out from a yard in Battersea as I think quartzite can vary a lot. The units are from unitsonline.co.uk and are the burbidge petworth range.

Roosterhead · 14/07/2015 09:38

Compared to others we have a really awkward kitchen shape as it is a galley with a big window on one side and a serving hatch on the other. One end (not shown) is way narrower as well.

Can't tell from the photos but the floor is quite a bright turquoise. Wood countertops were not my first choice but so far they've been ok.

Those of you who have wood worktops, how to you stop them going black round the sink? We've had ours a year and it drives me mad!

Roosterhead · 14/07/2015 11:14

We wipe round the sink a lot. And we used loads of Osmo oil when they went in.

PigletJohn · 14/07/2015 12:12

the Astracast Bistro sink is also very good with wooden worktops, as it runs right back to the wall - no wood behind or under it or near the taps. There are probably others.

Belleview · 14/07/2015 12:15

Is it basically a sit in sink that avoids the wood and water problem? The Bistro is v £££.

MrsJamin · 14/07/2015 13:24

I couldn't find any cheaper options for sinks that went from front to back unfortunately, so it's going to be wiping-like-mad and osmo oil when our iroko worktops go in.

Watergirl, yours is my favourite so far! Looking forward to having ours done so we can add my picture in a month or so.

PigletJohn · 14/07/2015 14:10

"sit-on" sink. You can put it on a 1000mm unit with no worktop. It meets up with the worktop at each side.

There are more utilitarian sinks that do the same thing, used in commercial kitchens. They seem to be in a thicker grade of stainless, which is not so silvery, and the sinks are deeper. Catering equipment is often discounted

IkeaYoukea · 14/07/2015 14:16

Yep, we wipe loads. Maybe I need to be sanding and oiling much more frequently? Changing the sink isn't an option. I wondered about matt varnish, if a product exists that can be used over a previously oiled surface.

SophiePendragon · 14/07/2015 14:19

We just got rid of a catering sink we'd bought a year ago while renovating.

It was awful. 4ft wide, very deep bowl, large drainer, upstand built in - all lovely - but the f*ing thing wouldn't drain properly, it only had a tiny waste not a basket one, the water sat in the sink and if you adjusted the feet so it drained better, the water went all over the draining board instead!

It was f*ing useless.
I understand Franke do great catering sinks but ours was a cheap copy made by some steel fabricators somewhere I think. Good quality steel but bad bad design.

Belleview · 14/07/2015 19:22

Heh, yes,sit on not sit IN!!

Bostonpj · 14/07/2015 20:35

I'm loving looking at all your pictures. Our new kitchen will finally be finished on Friday. It's taken 3 weeks as DH wanted granite countertops which are arriving Thursday. I'll post some photos when it's all done. Can't wait!

MrsFlorrick · 14/07/2015 23:01

Watergirl. Thanks. Grin
I think MKW are the only ones that do that one. Couldn't find anyone else in the UK.

Can you tell me how much per sqm? Please.
