Wondered if hand holding for Sept newbies would be nice?

Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

Sew at each end then do large running stitch along each side. I've found that to be sufficient when sewing in tags in the past.

hattyyellow · 24/08/2009 20:51

Cheers all.

Aranea I like your "without a Grand Plan plan". Makes sense.

Golgi good point about not labelling nursery clothes - I only labelled sunhats and coats for the girls at nursery. Wahey! One less thing to do - no labelling!

Those of you whose kids have been in nursery etc care pre-school - do you have a whole folder of colour coded assessments to give in? Or is that just us? I do wonder when on earth the teacher will find the time to read through it all..

My biggest concern is being able to find the girls shoes in amongst the packing boxes on day one. Chaos.

At least we have coffee at the village hall for all the parents who can come on day one. Nice idea I think.

hattyyellow · 24/08/2009 20:58

Ps does anyone else have a child who is still prone to drama queen tantrums? One of my girls can still have a complete flip at nursery if she wanted the x bowl and someone else gets it...

do they get overawed by the whole concept of school and lose the tantrums?

Aranea · 24/08/2009 21:03

We've been given a few pages of assessments to pass on, disappointingly monochrome though.

Can't help on the tantrums thing I'm afraid though, as mine has never been a tantrummer. I'm not sure this is a good thing though, as it means she broods on things for ages. I rather admire children who just let rip cos that's how they feel.

Aranea · 24/08/2009 21:06

wow, I just used the word 'though' 3 times in that post.

paisleyleaf · 24/08/2009 21:17

Had a wardrobe clear out to get the uniform in and did the label sewing and 'about me' booklet today.
Took longer than I'd thought it would.

I've been thinking about the school meals and worrying about how the dinner ladies are. I remember feeling quite bullied by dinner ladies to finish everything (coleslaw etc that I didn't like as a child).
I'm hoping they're more relaxed these days, as I'm quite keen for school meals to work out for DD (particularly the winter months).
I don't want her to be put off in first few weeks then have 7 years of packed lunch.

golgi · 24/08/2009 22:39

Oh the tantrums - we have those. And the howling and wailing at any slight upset or injury. I have mentioned to the boy that this might not go down too well in the playground.
When we're out and he falls over, people turn and stare, no doubt expecting to see some sort of horrific injury.
I'm hoping he will feel more self-conscious at school and not let rip quite so much.

I think I'm going to go with packed lunch to start with, mostly because I can't figure out how to order school dinners! He's also a bit weird with food - all parts have to be separate so woe betide if a dinner lady put gravy on his potatoes.....

He's an interesting character, my son.

OK next job on list - School shoes - sooooo.... what ya all doin' / done already (I know you lot ) regarding sensible school shoes???

Links are very welcome!!!!

Aranea · 25/08/2009 10:13

did you have a nice holiday?

(obviously I have done nothing about school shoes as have done nothing about anything)

Ixia · 25/08/2009 11:50

Our school list just says sensible shoes. So I haven't bought black (bleurgh), just hope she doesn't come home on day 1 and say everyone has got black shoes . She's already commented on the fact that most children wear logoed (is that a word) uniform...I've bought her non-logoed

simpson · 25/08/2009 11:59

Ok have now found labels

So now I have no excuse not to start sewing

On the shoe front i am lucky in that DS does not start till end of Sept to TBH am going to risk it and leave it till most other kids are back at school early sept then get them.

Hope I don't regret this as i find everything out of stock!!

Of to try DS's school uniform on him properly for first time, hope it fits!!

golgi · 25/08/2009 13:23

I bought some cheap school shoes in ASDA. School said they take them off as soon as they get inside and wear plimsolls/trainers/slippers - so he won't have them on for long anyway.

bodenaddict · 25/08/2009 14:45

have bought these for school for dd1 her school just states dark shoes :-

she has size 6f feet dont do school shoes in her size

good luck sewing

Acinonyx · 25/08/2009 22:19

Thanks nanny!

Got dd's shoes. There was a power cut in the street and chaos in the shops. They only had ONE pair of black shoes in dd's size - but they happened to be one of the nice patent black that I'd seen online and we got them and she loves them. So fairly painless.

Still need to sew those labels. Got a weather proof coat from M & S - think I should get a lighter raincoat too.

newspaperdelivery · 26/08/2009 19:18

Hi all.

Had a playdate with a litlle dc who is going to be in my dd class, and who will also start in the 3rd wave with her. Quite funny really as they totally played seperately. It will be another familiar face and thats good.

Our shoes are from HushPuppies and meet my patent needs But they are a bit wide, but what can I do? She has these bonkers skinny feet [7 c/d at Clarks] They are a bit like these

Realised today that probably need a tracksuit top for outside PE. I hop ethey use all this stuff!!

I don't know if I said that her class starts in 3 waves dependant on age? So the young ones go in full time but there are 10 of them, then a week later next 10, final ten start 15th.

Probably a sound idea, but is assumes alot based on age. My dd has had very few full days at playschool relative to a dc who has had full time nursery, and is infact a bit lacking on the stamina, energy and social front. She could do with a rolling start herself! If she is very tired or stressed I will try negotiate a few half days.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 19:53

less than a week to go here.

my friend bumped into the teavher in town and found out it's tuesday they're back on.

[runs screaming and hides head under duvet]

moodlumthehoodlum · 26/08/2009 20:00

Two weeks to go here.

DS made me cry yesterday because I asked him what he was looking forward to doing at school, and he said "seeing all my friends"... But because he's going to a new school to which he hasn't been to the nursery, he won't actually know anyone on the first day..

I am going to be a seriously gibbering wreck.

I'm also going to perk myself up by buying a pair of grey converse for the school run.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 20:19

i like that plan moodlum... sadly i just maxed out my credit card on a new mattress so no cheer me up shoes for me

newspaperdelivery · 26/08/2009 20:54

oh moodlum

But like the idea of the school run converse. Can I pinch that?

New thread could be
sept newbies...2nd term
sept newbies. Good grief it's september.
sept newbies...poo, pens and pandemonium [sp?]
sept newbies...shoes, socks and september shocks.

Ixia · 26/08/2009 21:01

Bodenaddict, we wanted those shoes in red (DD's uniform is red), but they didn't have her size .

But we got these (link below) and love them, but they are an 8G and she measures an 8E, go figure?!

middymo · 26/08/2009 21:40

Hello, what's everyone doing with regards to naming socks? Are you bothering at all, sewing labels (if so where), using laundry pen? Thanks

golgi · 26/08/2009 22:41

I'm buying cheap socks!

Have sewn labels, and even trained the boy to wee standing up. Now I need to stop him putting his hand down his trousers and fiddling with the things that he finds there.

I said to him this evening "you won't be able to do that at school"

His reply "Mwah ha ha ha, they won't be able to stop me!"

Hmmmm.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:45

lol. Actually i shouldn't laugh, both the ds's have a similar facination with fondling the contents of their pants/nappy.

ds2 is only 6 months and already the second his nappy is off he shoves his hand down and gets a disturbingly content look on his face.... i can envisage a simiar comment form him in years to come!

cheap ass pennys [primark] socks here too... life is too short to label socks

nannynick · 26/08/2009 23:17

Socks:
The iron on labels are good for those. I've been known to iron on a labels on the morning of the socks needing to be used... the iron on labels only take a couple of minutes, so it can be done in a bit of rush if necessary.

Label PE socks.
Label socks which will be worn on PE days - you may want to label say 2 or 3 pairs of socks... then remember to get your child to wear one of the labelled pairs of socks on a PE day.

CatHerder · 27/08/2009 08:56

Aagh labelling socks. Never bothered with dd as I knew I could trust her to stuff her socks inside her shoes when she changed for pe. But ds1 is just as likely to ping his socks across the classroom when he takes them off. They're grey socks, I wonder if I can put his initials on them with laundry marker pen?

Reading - our school have said we start with about 3 minutes a day at home, learning letters. I can manage that at the kitchen table while ds2 has a banana, I reckon!

I did all the other labels yesterday with taggits - those are fab!

And ds1's size 2-3 BHS adustable-waist trousers actually fit him, hooray.

He's driving me bonkers this week, I'm counting the days now...

(oh, it's Fruitful btw, in holiday mode)
