Wondered if hand holding for Sept newbies would be nice?

Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

Hello - two weeks to go here and still haven't done any sewing.

Must remember to fill in the "about me" stuff too.

I've got a complicated boy starting. Will let you know if I can manage to get him to write anything himself!

newspaperdelivery · 21/08/2009 22:14

PinkTulips - are you me? [hmmm] I could have written that post!

I think I am relaxing into the girl thing, and have plunged myself into the complex mind wars girls seem to subject themselves too. Another good reason to be terrified of school - little girls. In groups.

I went to all girls too Aranea, and grew up entirely around women [are you me?] - the girls seemed so much less complex when the boys weren't around. That school saved me. It was so right for me, although I wish they had made me work harder at my exams

I really do wish dd needed a pencil case

Aranea · 21/08/2009 22:21

Oh god yes, newspaper (don't think I'm you, btw, but will keep a close eye on the situation) - I am trying to brace myself for lots of tragic encounters with other little girls. DD1 does take things quite hard and takes what other children say very seriously. She'll have to toughen up a bit.

newspaperdelivery · 21/08/2009 22:27

I'm certain that I am you. Or that you have my dd. Or I have yours. Or something. So similar!

So who is PinkTulips and have any of you got a nice mansion I can claim as my own and move into. You imposters

Aranea · 21/08/2009 22:31

lol newspaper

Aranea · 21/08/2009 22:33

Actually I think I can prove I have a legitimate claim to my home. My dd is not spontaneously doing multiplication or anything like it. Hah.

(though she did rather excitedly learn to count to 100 this evening. She is very pleased with herself)

newspaperdelivery · 21/08/2009 22:49

Bugger.

S'ppose I'll have to clean this one then.

Aranea · 21/08/2009 22:55

ooo, you can clean this one if you prefer!

Aranea · 21/08/2009 22:56

It looks like a 4yo exploded in here today.

newspaperdelivery · 22/08/2009 13:17

No cleaning done. Or sewing. just mumsnetting

Did I sound smug with my tales or multiplication? Didn't mean too
DD1 is completely inept in many other ways so have feet firmly on ground here. Still, am hoping one of them can keep me whhen old. Be that through genius, hard work or lottery win - I'm not too bothered which.

Aranea · 22/08/2009 13:41

Oh gosh no didn't mean to suggest you had been being smug. Though actually even if you had been I think it would have been quite justified. I'm very impressed. It's lovely when there's something they do that amazes you, and it's such a shame if you feel you can't share it with people for fear of sounding like a boasting mummy.

I think I'm specially impressed by your dd because I had a huge blind spot about that sort of thing as a child. My parents say it was quite strange. Luckily I got the hang of it in time for secondary school. My dd1 seems quite ordinarily able in that way - not surprising to anyone else but it still surprises me because I just couldn't see the world that way at her age. I still can't do jigsaws, though, which I think is a bit connected.

newspaperdelivery · 22/08/2009 14:38

OOOO good . You didn't suggest it in the slightest, I was wondering myslef.

Was thinking about it in bed

I have a total fraction problem I never ever got how to multiply a fraction.

Ta chuck

Acinonyx · 22/08/2009 16:06

Dd is quite mathsy but I just so wish she could go to the toilet and just do a poo like other children .

PinkTulips · 22/08/2009 17:48

delivery, you can come clean my hovel mansion if you'd like

I have what can only be described as some sort of mathematical dyslexia... it would have been quite funny in school if it wasn't so utterly tragic. I did honours for the Laving Cert as upon examining the pass papers i realised i'd fail those too and felt it was less embarrassing to fail honours than pass

It's not really surprising my kids can't count past 12 is it?

delivery, smugness is wholly justified, nee utterly compulsory , when discussing a multiplying 4 year old

Aranea · 22/08/2009 20:32

Oh poor little Acinonyx's dd. I hope she is OK.

I am knackered now after a hard day watching DH putting up stairgates.

golgi · 22/08/2009 22:45

I've finally sewn some labels! Have discovered that label-sewing and X-factor go quite nicely together (with a glass of wine) so shall do the rest next Saturday.

simpson · 22/08/2009 22:48

golgi - well done on the sewing front

Still have not tracked down labels in house.

newspaperdelivery · 22/08/2009 23:25

I know how you feel Acinonyx. We had years of it. Maybe try the chiropractor? Or movicol. Or both.

Oh no Simpson, no sign yet?

No labelling here either.

hattyyellow · 23/08/2009 21:17

Ooh can I join please?

I have twin girls starting school in September. Not entirely sure they will cope as they go straight in full time and they only turned 4 a few weeks ago. Well we will soon see!

We move house on Friday and they start school a week later. Aggggghhhhhhh. We were supposed to complete weeks ago and the whole thing got pushed back.

School has no uniform and I can't face labelling every item of their clothing - does anyone else have this predicament and what are you doing about it?

Aranea I wondered also about the reading aloud after school - as I will have two kids trying to read to me plus we have an 8 month old baby. Did you get any answers on this?

Aranea · 23/08/2009 21:35

Hello hatty

It all sounds very stressful, good luck with the move.

I'm in the same situation re. no uniform. I haven't done anything about it and am hoping masterly inactivity will see me through OK. I am rationalising it by saying that it will be fine as their stuff will be easily identifiable unlike uniform.

I don't really feel there is an obvious answer to the reading problem. I suppose I will just have to muddle through it all somehow day by day without a Grand Plan. Thinking about it, that approach has never yet let me down.

newspaperdelivery · 23/08/2009 21:59

I like your style.

Mine is somewhat similar, but has an element of 'throw money at it'. I always hope to spend my way out of any tight corner/issue.

Mum has offered to take away the uniform and label it. I threw it in her car quickly greatfully accepted. Woo Hoo!

golgi · 23/08/2009 22:06

I don't think I'd bother labelling "not-uniform". I didn't label anything that he wore to nursery last year. Although he did come home with someone else's shoes once (same style, different size!)

I'm hoping that granny will do the "reading-after-school" bit - boy likes reading for granny, and if we wait until I get home from work he may well be too tired.

Aranea · 23/08/2009 22:11

Result, newspaper!

golgi - very nice piece of delegation there too... I think I need to work on that skill.

bodenaddict · 24/08/2009 09:08

morning

gd luck hattyy

Acinonyx · 24/08/2009 18:29

Can I ask a stupid question about sewing in tags? Do you just sew them in at each end or do you sew them in flat, all the way around (please tell me it's the former......)?
