Wondered if hand holding for Sept newbies would be nice?

Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

My DS2 is starting too. He's gonna hate it at first, I reckon, then love it (has been climbing the walls at nursery being an Autumn kid)

It is much easier this time round having been through it once. But DS1 starts Big School next year so crapping it in advance all over again.

TwoSunnyDays · 19/06/2009 20:35

M&S pinafores tend to be small in size

treedelivery · 19/06/2009 20:38

I dunno about pencil cases and all that.

dd1 can dress herself, but she will need an hour or so.......

I'll be asking about that at the induction thingie.

I too felt there was very little notice, if I wasn't on mat leave there would be no way I could get to it if I was rostered on.

Am going to get the real old traditional cash's tapes - like we all had. And some funkier shoe labels etc. SHe needs a labeled sports bag too. Nostalgia trip!

LupusinaLlamasuit · 19/06/2009 20:41

Jeez, all you Noobs with your name tapes. Us, ahem, old hands make do with The Felt Tip From Mothercare.

Or if you do private school must have woven name tapes, at least only do the Surname so you can Hand Down. Ah. No. You won't be doing that will you?

Wheelybug · 19/06/2009 20:44

I'm in. My dd1 starts school in September. She can't wait. She's a january born so will only be doing mornings until Christmas which she isn't happy about.

Ordered all her grey bits from M&S on line and they have been despatched but sweatshirt, polo shirt and pe t-shirt are all logo'd so need to go to special shop.

DD1 has an induction in a couple of weeks but their teacher did go in to their nursery yersterday to meet them. Her nursery is not attached but the nearest one to it so a lot go from there meaning she'll know about 11 out of 30 in her class.

treedelivery · 19/06/2009 20:44

Wont be handing down as within a month cardi's etc will be rammed down back of car seat and covered in goo.

Is this a good time to ask if anyone is getting organic uniforms?

No private here, but a drive to the school. Guted as I hate the pre school drive.

ooh and I agree re woven name tapes - I bought them when dd started nursery and we had to label things. The problem is I can't sew so I ahve to get my Mum to do it and she always asks me why I don't get iron on ones. But they have to be lovely woven ones - I got them in italic writing too as thats what we had as kids. Sob. Nostalgia. We also each had a different colour (my oldest brother had blue, second one ahd red, me green). DD1 has red so dd2 will have to be blue or green. Saddo.

Lilyloo · 19/06/2009 20:51

my dd starts this time too
I ordered the uniform from m&s with free delivery , 3 for 2 and 10% off code.
I got 2 pinafores , 1 skirt for pe days, 4 polo shirts and knee length socks.
The polo shirts are small.
I will get school logo cardigans.
dd has had one settling in day last week and has another next week and one the week after.

treedelivery · 19/06/2009 20:52

I am so there Wheelybug.
Nostalgia. Who remembers those shoe bags with the names embroidered[sp?] on?

So organic uniforms.....now is this pfb gone mad or does her eczema warrrant all the help she can get? Plus she isn't used to central heat

Is anyone else panicking over the drop off/pick up situation? It has been so easy with nursery open till 6, not sure how we are going to manage with 3.20 pick ups on the days that I work. I'm a secondary school teacher, so I don't even know what days I'll be working in September til the new timetable is revealed (usually last day of term).

pigswithfludontfly · 19/06/2009 21:22

My feelings are similar to Boco's in that I'm also self-employed and don't have enough work time but I will miss the little chap when he starts as I love his company these days. Can't imagine sitting alone for lunch for example .

I really could do with hearing what arrangements are going to be for settling in e.g. mornings for half a term or full time though so I can plan my work. Hoping to find out next week. To be honest I'll be very disappointed from a work point of view if he's part time for ages, especially given he has two proper days at nursery at the moment so is kind of used to more than mornings only.

Tentatively looked at M&S school uniform brochure and am going to try and order some next week. Their sizes are usually quite generous so I'm probably just going to order age 3 (ds is quite small, summer bday) and I'm sure that will do for most of the year.

We've got loads of settling in sessions over the next few weeks which I take is a good sign that the school takes it all seriously.

Acinonyx · 19/06/2009 21:27

I have one pfb starting in Sep. She's 4 in July. Very interesting about uniforms - I have been rather confused about that. Just been checking out the grey stuff at M & S. Think I wil get some of the red stuff too - and then some with logo.

I think I'll take her to try the pinafores on as she is rather tubby. She has never worn a skirt as she has no waist, bless. But one for PE days sounds a good idea.

CM will pick dd up when I'm working. Thank goodness we can walk to school.

Bog standard iron on labels here I'm afraid. I don't do sewing. Actually I don't do ironing either...

Bit worried about dd being SO shy and whether she will ever be able to go to the toilet on her own.

PortAndLemon · 19/06/2009 21:31

My PFB is starting in September.

Have bought his uniform second-hand, darned a few holes and ironed in nametapes (major point of naming everything, AFAICS, is for him to be able to recognise his own stuff, which he probably wouldn't from the surname alone or from my having scribbled on a random bit of label -- when I've named stuff for nursery, where it's the teachers who need to be able to identify it, I've normally done one of those two options).

When we hand stuff down to DD after a bit more darning I'll either cross out the first name if she's a more advanced reader than DS, or replace the nametape, or (if I don't think she's got enough of a NSB complex already) leave DS's name in on the basis that she'll probably be able to recognise his name almost as well as hers...

I am doing an ostrich impression over the difficulties of dropping off, picking up and school holidays.

treedelivery · 19/06/2009 21:33

Worries here about drop off and pick up. I work shifts - 12 hour days. And dh will miss it entirely.

Nanna and Grandad it is then!
My dd has opposite prob Acininyx - skinny little thing. So pinafore good for her too.

We only have 1 2 hour session!

LadyIsabella · 19/06/2009 21:34

Pigs, I agree about almost going backwards with the part-time start - DS does 3 full nursery days now and copes fine. Haven't been into school yet (meeting on 1st July), so don't know how they structure the settling in period. They couldn't even tell me what day the reception start when I rang up!

Lilyloo · 19/06/2009 21:37

am lucky this time i am sahm so don't have that worry i had with ds.
Might be worth getting names and numbers of after school clubs / childminders in anticipation of your work pattern.

I actually find M&S on the small side pigs especially their polo shirts (others too on school unifrom thread) so make sure they will fit if you order small.

treedelivery · 19/06/2009 21:38

Wonder why we have only one session? Maybe because she is older [Oct baby]

My postnatal thread is coming with some great tags and name tapes

these

these

My biggest worry is the seemingly short notice for things. I need to request a day off to attend stuff, so need bags of notice!

OP posts:
bodiddly · 19/06/2009 21:43

Im going to have the pick up/drop off problems as well. I am hoping I can persuade them to let him go full time as he has been at nursery for full days since he was 6 months old! I think he would find half days confusing.

fatzak · 19/06/2009 21:45

Will your DD be 5 in Oct then treedelivery? I was wondering about the lot from my postnatal thread - dont think it exists any more - which would have been "Due Sept 2005" DS2 was 3 weeks early(Aug 25th) so he has ended up the school year about but at least they are letting us defer until Jan. He is so excited about going to school with his big brother but I am very You still excited Treedelivery by the way about the campervan

fatzak · 19/06/2009 21:46

"above" not "about"

swissmiss · 19/06/2009 21:51

Me too! PFB DS starts in Sept. Thankfully they have pre-school for 2hrs every Monday this term so I'm sure he'll be fine by Sept. Mind you he's only been going since half term as we only got a place on re-consideration, the last geographical spot available. It's caused all sorts of upset amongst the villages as he got in over their kids (we live on the edge of town and are defo not "locals" ) but it was fair and square on as crow flies there just happens to be a canal in the way which makes for a slightly long drive. School run will be fun as DD1 has 2 diff pre-school/playgroups to go too as well, one of which starts at same time as big school.

Picked up some black jogging bottoms/daps in Sainsbury's today. Ordered the logo stuff last week @ school but have only got a few bits. Waiting on rest. Will go to M&S next week and get the grey stuff. Just leave shoes till late August.

Babbity · 19/06/2009 21:51

I'm in - DS1 starts in September.

We've had two settling in sessions already (though we missed the first one as we were on holiday) but the school got the official uniform supplier to come to the hall that day - so I've got all the logo'd stuff and have done a big M&S order for the rest. Still have to buy shoes but someone on another thread suggested buying a foot gauge so you can measure your children's feet at home then buy online so I think I'll do that.

We start off at just a few hours - 8:40 until 11:30 for the first week with surnames A-E starting on day 1, F-M starting day 2 etc etc. The second week is until just after lunch - 1 or 1:15 ish. Then the 3rd week is full time. Though you can choose esp if your child is a young one (mine isn't) to go much slower than that.

bodiddly · 19/06/2009 21:51

I am so jealous of those of you who are getting organised and ordering uniform and labels .... I think I will see if I can see the Reception Teacher before we go away if she has the time!

swissmiss · 19/06/2009 21:53

Hey Wheely, fancy bumping into you on here! I'll try and email details to all the fur quits over weekend.

PortAndLemon · 19/06/2009 21:53

I think we just have a 10.30 start the first day, then straight into full-time.
