Wondered if hand holding for Sept newbies would be nice?

Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

teafofrtwo - it's not unlike her is it?

Pig - I understand the shoe thing. DD is a c-d!! C! So the odd ballet slipper fits. Oh and Rondinella at £60 a pair She's fattened up a bit so Clarks D are ok wit insoles. Always have to order them though.

Gosh tree - thought ds had skinny feet (d fitting). It's such a pain as they never have any nice ones in his size and the likes of Geox won't fit properly.

I've given up looking at the full range of shoes in shops as I only end up disappointed when they bring out the one pair in ds's size which I won't like.

Not even a fan of Clarks but given up elsewhere as at least they do width fittings.

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 20:28

You can get startrite online now, plus they have many amazing ways of measuring feet. I find their sizes are of a better standard size - so for example, dd was an 8, chap brought a 7 by mistake and it fit her
Also startrite d is more narrow than Clarks.

Sucks having no choice though. DD is due to grow in height and I just know her feet will get longer and skinnier. She's been a 7.5 and an 8 for ages.

We thought we would have to get shoes made at one point!! Can you imagine what that would cost

teafortwo · 23/06/2009 20:32

Ahaaaa - pigswith I am delighted that you noticed ... I giggled when I wrote it too!!!

bodiddly · 23/06/2009 20:59

ooh I have the opposite problem with ds' feet .. they are wide and he has high arches so nothing fits him! I am very familiar with the choice of one pair of shoes at some shockingly expensive price! I go to an independent shop in town but usually end up with startrite or ecco.

simpson · 23/06/2009 21:03

can i join??

DS (PFB)is starting in Sept.

He is an August baby and if he was a day younger would be starting the following Sept

But I guess cut off point has to be somewhere!!

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 21:08

Hello simpson, welcome.

Don't forget to ds the register!

[long list of posters with a does: and a doesn't: about your dd. Just copy and paste and add yourself]

I'd never have seen the 'gingerley' - am shockingly thick at that stuff.

Can I introduce a new panic? I think i'll manage to buy shoes, uniform will be mostly hand me downs from his siblings and I have discovered that sewing name labels is a great job for the MIL BUT how do I get his hair cut, both DH and I have taken him to various establishments and left without a haircut, my most recent attempt involved getting a parent from pre school who is a hairdresser to come to the house and ' do her best' while I held him down, maybe i'll just get him an alice band

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 21:16

Maybe he could be a little surfey dude?

OP posts:
bodiddly · 23/06/2009 21:34

we found a great place where they have a kids corner with a dvd player ... he now (admittedly after many trips) will sit quite happily and watch a dvd while getting his hair cut. He does get a sweet from the hairdresser afterwards as well.... which certainly helps the bribery!

simpson · 23/06/2009 21:50

Is there anyone that can add me to register as computer playing up & won't let me cut & paste.

simpson has DS who will be 4.0 on 1st day of school. He can feed, dress and has no toilet problems. he can count, knows most letters and is starting to read some words. He also draws & holds pencil well but no writing yet. Main worry is tiredness as he gets very tired just doing half days at preschool.

golgi · 23/06/2009 21:57

geogteach - I cut my boys' hair myself. Park them in front of a DVD and bribe with chocolate for afterwards if they don't wriggle too much.
They look a bit.....well like their mum has cut their hair. But I don't want to pay for them to have a tantrum in a hairdressers!
Does Peppa Pig go and get a haircut at all? It worked for the dentist. Not sure she's got any hair actually.

Had a letter home from nursery today - we are to provide a black t-shirt and trousers for a school play costume - by next Wednesday. And the school Fayre is this Friday and would we like to bake cakes? Think this may be a problem - it does seem like a lot of the other village mummies don't work, so are able to do domestic duties at short notice. My boy will be the one who never has the right costume on the right day.....

He also draws & holds pencil well but no writing yet. Main worry is tiredness as he gets very tired just doing half days at preschool.

Acinonyx has one dd will be 4.1 starting school. Major toilet issues and very shy. Draws well, writes, counts and does some very simple sums but no reading.

Babbity has DS who will be 4.10. Can do dressing, eating and toileting. Knows alphabet and loves numbers/ sums/ "science" but not interested in writing, holding pencil, or anything creative. Bum wiping adequate.

blametheparents has a DD who will be 4.6. Recognises letters and is trying to work out sounds in words, but cannot read. Can do simple adding and taking away sums. Desperate to start school with her big brother, keep reminding her she will not be in his class. Some toilet issues, she has been prescribed movicol now which is helping loads, but need to keep a close eye on her diet.

DwayneDibbley has DD who will be 4.2 on first day. Can do buttons, and get dressed, eats like a horse, knows alphabet, numbers, simple sums, can read (well, spells out words phonically and then says what word is, and just beginning to know whole words by sight iyswim?). no inclination to write at all. Good bum wiper, but cannot blow nose. Is terrible telltale, and huge perceiver of non-existent injustices, the constant communication of which, I fear, will make her unpopular with teachers.

Fruitful has DS1 who will be 4.7, starting full-time the second week. Can just about write his name, can mostly get dressed except for jumpers for some reason, can't wipe his bum but has completely mastered the art of only ever pooing at home

golgi has son 4.8 on first day. Can do numbers, letters, read some words. Will not pick up pen or pencil or dress himself. Still has a nap after lunch if given half a chance.

LadyIsabella has DS1, 4.9. Having a massive testosterone surge at the moment, very curious about most things (esp. space, science etc) but not at all patient (drawings take 1 min etc). Refuses to wipe his bottom unless bribed with stickers etc.

norksinmywaistband has dd 4.9 on first day, very keen to start. Knows her numbers and letters, and write her own name - in a fashion. She has poo issues and I am worried about tantrums toward end of day as she gets very stroppy when tired

pigswithflu - one ds (4.2) on first day. Improving with own dressing but often all wrong way round. Can read whole sentences (proud mummy alert), good at maths but barely writes something akin to name.
Buttons and bum wiping on to do list for summer hols.

Pinktulips has one dd (4.7) starting in sept. toilet issues, chronic shyness and hates letters and counting. has master bum wiping but buttons still a tricky one. she's great at drawing and things involving fine motor skills though (puzzles and crafty things)

Swissmiss has DS who will be 4.8 on first day. Not really interested in the academic stuff, much prefers to be making stuff. Can dress / wipe bottom but prefers not so it is the source of many a frustation on both our parts. Like Wheelybug's dd he talks a lot and will spend most of his time being told to talk less and listen more.

teafortwo has one dd will be 3.4 on first day. This is the age all children start school in Paris (where milk and tea live). Butterflies are us - but in a good way !

treedelivery has dd1 age 4.10 on 1st day. Does own dressing and academic stuff. Does not do bowel control, eating or relaxing. Todays 'Mamma worries' score 6/10

Wheelybug has dd who will be 4.7. Beginning to read and does other academic stuff hanks to a good pre-school but talks far too much so will probably spent most of her time being told to talk less and listen more.

Wolfnipplechips dd is 4.7 in sept, can dress herself, wipebum and write names. Loves drawing, craftyness and ballet. Is left handed so struggles a bit with letter formation. Is a scruffy child and her dm and db are going to miss her terribly

Babygeog will be 4.11, he is ready academically ,starting to read, obsessed with numbers but like many on here reluctant to write, in other ways he is a baby, he is number 3 and likes to play the fool. He has to wear a shirt and is clueless on buttons. Not really sure what i'll do in September...

Waves at Simpson. As you've asked so nicely . Looks like you, I and Wheelybug all have the same thing planned come sept - reading!

wolfnipplechips · 23/06/2009 22:29

teafortwo i had a sneaky look at your pics and they are really lovely, they look like stills from a film.

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 22:51

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 23:25

You can have it. Its always foggy or windy here.

I miss the city sooooo much. sniff. Think Icam not cut out for small town [unless it's genteel and near a city]

OP posts:
teafortwo · 23/06/2009 23:34

wolf - your photos are lovely too - but considering milk is usually covered in chocolate, mud, snot or a mixture of all three you living-room almost gave me heart failure!!! It is so perfect. I suppose it needs to be like that to match your perfect family - they are really perfectly scrummy!!!!

The bottom two pics on my profile are from our wedding day (we eloped to London with milk and a couple of friends to tie the knot) - the pics were taken in Covent Garden.

The top photo is from my sister's wedding. I am quite allergic to formal gatherings and called "help" on mn. I was completely styled by mn style and beauty laydiiies so had to put that pic up to show off their skills!

wolfnipplechips · 23/06/2009 23:36

I never thought i was a city girl until we decided to move house a couple of months ago and i find myself having panic attacks everytime my dh likes a house more than 15 mins from the centre of town.

I do love the countryside though, my IL have a beautiful holiday home about 40 mins from us in the peaks and its idyllic i'm just not sure what i'd do if i had to spend all my time there. I'm from the sea side though and i do really miss it, even the mist and fog

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 23:36

teafortwo - Ace!

Had mild palpatations at the white lounge too, then remembered I have 2 cream sofas and cream silk curtains! No one ever goes in the lounge. Wonder why??
