Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

Oh and for the record, i'm about as far from a yummy mummy as possible only a couple of weeks ago i was congratulated on my pregnancy ds is 2yo, no babies here. But thank you all the same.

blametheparents · 23/06/2009 16:51

DD had a friend round to play today who will be in her class and they played beautifully together They had lunch and then I took them both to pre-school.

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 17:14

teenage years were the hardest as a redhead. Am ok now, but still pasty and white skinned and do have 'ishoos' about that. Striving to not pass them on the dc's

People say either 'kind of nice' things about dd's hair or say totally shit things.
Things I hate

'how's her temper?' - 'No worse than yours must be with that face dearie'

'has she noticed her red hair yet?' - 'not as much as she's noticed her beauty'

'will you dye it?' - 'not before she's 5 anyway'

'Oh that's in my family but we got away with it' - 'Hmm yes I can see Lots of stuff runs in families doesn't it?'

The nice but a bit ?? are

'I'd love hair that colour but mine is brown' 'dye it that colour then'

'I love it despite what people say' ' what do they say?'

All makes me really. But I wish the crap things weren't said infront of her.

People say lovely things though - that they like it and it's like a Titian painting and other lovely stuff. So thats nice.

What a rant!!

treedelivery a smock looks like this and is worn by French children (boys and girls) over ordinary clothes for school...

www.letablierdecole.com/images/camillesmall.jpg

Milk's one has to be Navy blue and have the schoool name on it. We have to go to a special shop to buy it.

I really bigged it up! We had moule et frite together on a terrace in Paris beforehand. We did cheers with the drinks in honour of her school smock and everything that it means.

We gingerly entered the shop - expecting a big trying on session ending in exiting the shop with a bag containing the precious smock.

We were instead greeted by a very serious lady who said "Oh you are here for the smock. (opens book and starts to write without making eye contact) Name? Telephone number? (looks at Milk for less than a second), aged 4, I would say buy two one for wash one for wear... (writes 2 in book) thank you and goodbye."

Me - "So... so... so.... (stunned voice) what happens now? Do I come back and collect it? When? (seems logical) In about a week perhaps?"

Woman - "No come back in Sepember. I have some school coats if you want?" (waves over-priced coats before my eyes.)

Me - "No thanks."

So then we went to the park used by Milk's school-to-be and played for the rest of the afternoon. We bumped into a Mum we know with two children already attending Milk's school-to-be. I told her the story of the smock. She smiled at my innocence and told me stories of the absolute bun-fight to be expected in September getting ordered smocks and books needed too...! + [scared emotion]!!!!

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 17:25

I went to school in Spain for a term. I can still remember the smock and the drive around the whole of Majorca for the books. I remember the name embroidery too. So lovely.

Have to say your trip out for uniform slightly more glam than a bun fight in M&S in a windy highstreet in a small town in Yorkshire.......so forgive me if not too sympathetic

Who's with me? lets go!

at ginger rant!

I once had a dear friend who had a mini. All other mini drivers pipped at him knowingly and non mini drivers someimes too. I have noticed having ginger hair is a bit like this.

Sometimes people cross the street just to comment on Milk's hair.

When we were in Tunis we couldn't move for people stopping us and asking if we would be kind enough to let them kiss Milk's head... which made us giggle lots!

Since having Milk I too go weak at the knees at the mere mention of ginger hair - so you can imagine I am still in recovery from looking at your profile the first day I posted on this thread, treedelivery... your dd is beautifully angelic!

teafortwo · 23/06/2009 17:33

Where in Italy are you going?

lollyheart · 23/06/2009 17:35

Hi my dd starts school in sept too, she is my bfp so this is all new to me.
I find out tonight who her teacher will be and who will be her class.

Im off now to read the thread.

lollyheart · 23/06/2009 17:36

That should be pfb

teafortwo · 23/06/2009 17:38

Hi Lollyheart - welcome to this school crazed thread!!!

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 17:42

No where, I just hear from wolf that people there dig the ginger
So am off to Sorrento, or to George Cloony's place if he's free.......in my head....

No one would want to kiss dd1's hair, she has...er....personal washing issues.

I think Milk should realy be called Milk. It's a great name!

Welcome to geogteach!

Great the playdate went well blametheparents. I was thinking of having one but I'm a bit nervous! What do you do?

OP posts:
wolfnipplechips · 23/06/2009 17:46

lol at ginger rant too. I died mine in solidarity with ds. My Dbil tells people that ds hair colour is african sunset, i love that.

tree your dd's have pre raphelite angel coloured hair. She needs practice this in response to peoples comments.

I'm trying to teach my dd to love her fair skin, its hard because i'm a sun worshipper but i do think really pale skin is beautiful and should be preserved, you should be proud of yours.

Anyway ladies as you were, i must go and spray dds hair with a half a bottle of hairspray and apply half a ton of blue eyeshadow .

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 17:50

I could get her to say that! And show her all the pics and explain it to her. Ohh lovely internet research project!!!

Or even a trip to Paris to see the masters at The Louvre. I think building my childs self worth entirely justifies a trip to Paris. Totally.

We invited the friend round at 10.30. They played in the garden for a bit om the trampoline and on the swings, and then with DD's Polly Pocket stuff in her bedroom. Gave them lunch at about 11.45 (cheese sandwiches, kiwi, cucumber and half a packet of hula hoops each) Then took them to pre-school at 12.30pm. Went really well, no arguing to speak of and good sharing (mostly)

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 18:19

Did parent stay?

OP posts:
blametheparents · 23/06/2009 18:33

No, we went solo!

I find it easier really cos can then concentrate on the kids rather than trying to have a conversation with the parent and then getting cross cos you are getting interrupted.
I do know the parent quite well though.

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 18:45

I don't know any parents, except to chat to at the pre school doors. DD has asked if one of her preschool friends can come to play so am a bit nervous.

Would need to hire a cleaner to visit for a start......

I have a red head also - dh used to ahve red hair and there is a lot of it in his family. Not had many off comments about it though, thankfully. We use a lot of sun cream though.

I've never done a play date without the parent yet - not relaly on play date terms with any of the local families yet. Have some regular mums I meet with from nct etc but the kids will all be going to different schools.

treedelivery · 23/06/2009 19:26

Yay more redheads!!

OP posts:
teafortwo · 23/06/2009 19:33

Ha ha ha - at Milk's real name being 'Milk" she does have an almost as daft name in real life! When her Granny first saw her she said "She is called ................. and has ginger hair??? You do know she is going to have a really tough time at school now don't you?"

I suppose we will find out in September !

teafortwo · 23/06/2009 19:37
  • sorry Milk wanted to show me how she has perfected dive bombing the sofa!? So I got a little distracted.

It was supposed to read...

pigswithfludontfly · 23/06/2009 20:06

PMSL at the fact teafortwo said you went GINGERLEY into the smock shop....

Welcome to all the new people on here.

I found out today that you can pre-order Clarks shoes on line so that the (probably) right size will be in stock when you go - definitely going to do this for ds' school shoes as I'm mega fussy re shoes and they never have any in stock to fit his skinny feet size.
