I haven't seen another thread similar to previous years, so thought it would be beneficial to start one as exams are now 1 month away.
I think SHHS, UCS, KCJS and WUS are all in October.

Also - Curious to see if number of applicants are down this year, with Labour's VAT raid.

So what was your boys’ feedback?
my son said they had 120 maths questions which I find hard to believe! He said maths and reasoning were tricky and he didn’t manage to write down all sentences in dictation.

Powerpray · 12/10/2024 13:02

Mine says listening was the toughest - 2 sections - in which only one of them was dictation type. The second section it seems they were supposed to write answers to some questions where they weren’t told/dictated the answers.

reasoning says only 8 questions which makes my heart sink. Maybe he has left a page😬😬😬

maths was easy he says - English comprehension broken out in a few sections and writing about a picture of a playground

Yes, same about English and 8 questions in reasoning. Please ask him about maths - rough number? Really curious because cannot believe they had 120!

Mama252 · 12/10/2024 13:15

Mine said he couldn't finish the first section of Maths and that reasoning was tricky. Listening he says was fine but can't remember a lot of details. He said comprehension was in two sections and composition they had to write about what they did at a funfair.

He is saying he didn’t count but section a and b were a lot of questions- section c was two questions

Mine said before they started the teacher said the Maths was longer than usual so they should not worry and just move on when she tells them too. He doesn't know how many questions though,

Caps0218 · 12/10/2024 14:16

I hate asking him as I fear the worst.....

However maths was easy, although he said he skipped 2 of the questions in section B. But answered all others.

Listening was mixed, he struggled with the last dictation question.

Reasoning was mixed..::seems it was more verbal.

Anyone sat the 8+? How did you find it?

Caps0218 · 12/10/2024 15:10

Also to add, seemed many were finding the verbal reasoning tricky, the teacher told them all to guess!!

Anyone here doing WUS on Friday? Seems they have completely moved away from iPads.

How did they do on the comprehension section? My son said everything was kind of "okay" except for comprehension. He thought the text and questions were hard and didn't finish the paper.

San2023 · 12/10/2024 15:18

My DS feedback was English had comprehension on 'planet mars' and composition on a picture showing rides and all in a park with instructions write about your day in a fun park. Comprehension was easy but he couldn't finish the composition completely.
In Maths, 3 sections. One of the Section had 2 questions only: one involved writing as many number statements as possible by looking at a grid of numbers based on addition. He couldn’t complete the other question as there wasn’t enough time. The other two sections were OK and he doesn’t remember how many questions there were.
Reasoning was little bit hard, he left 1-2 questions at end.
Listening- had dictation about some lines which he couldn't complete.otherwise rest was regular in listening but couldn't finish all.

user14809753 · 12/10/2024 16:48

Hey, do you know how many boys they're taking in the end? Is it 50? And how many do they call back for the second/final round? Is it about double the final intake?

Caps0218 · 12/10/2024 16:55

I think they take 54, so I would guess they ask at least 110 back. Also being the first exam they may over offer to around 60/65 so they could take back 120/130?

It’s hard to gauge how they’ve done, as it’s all relative to everyone else.
Our DS said comprehension was fine, though we know he made one mistake.
Story again he said it was fine, though he forgot to include speech marks, and perhaps could have added more description.
Maths he didn’t finish all of Section B.
Could not get much out of him for listening
Reasoning was tough and even the teacher told the class to guess.

I guess we find out on Wednesday.

Also discovered that the verbal bad 8 questions worth 25 marks....one question had 6 marks they had to add a 3 letter word to an existing word to create a new word.
One of them was Wimb---don.
Another was c---

So led and old.
This must have been the tricky part of verbal.
DS struggled here.

OP posts:
Caps0218 · 13/10/2024 09:05

Didn't let me write it properly

You had to LED to the middle to get Wimbledon.
Old to C to get cold or even ape to get cape etc...

DS said for one of the sections they had to complete the words that represented things that can find in a school, by adding a vowel(s)

E.g

bks---- books

I’m quite surprised at the Math. DS would usually struggle with the English but would finish Math test papers quite easily. Have they made it harder than usual or is it just this way all the time? They would want to keep to a high standard I suppose..

San2023 · 13/10/2024 12:40

From what I managed to gather from DS, everything was harder than the EPP tasks, except for comprehension. So I really don't know how he did on the ones he completed, let alone the ones he didn't finish.

Caps0218 · 13/10/2024 12:53

The maths is frankly odd; 3 ten minute sections...
That's 2 years they didn't have non verbal.
DS said most of the verbal was easy apart from the question about creating a 3 letter word to add to another word to make a new word

Felt the same way - but I did hear that sometimes, some groups start a little later maybe because of disruption from a child etc. So they just tell the children to move on to keep them on track for time but the teacher notes it down that they started late etc. Not sure if this applies or if I am just using it to console myself 🙈😂

Caps0218 · 13/10/2024 15:10

Do we know if they take a certain number through or their is a certain pass mark and take everyone above?

My DS did. He found it's ok, reasoning was the most difficult one he said. How many boys were there you think?

Well he seems to think it was around 90 boys but it seemed a fair bit more to me. I was thinking more around the 150 mark? My son found it ok too, he did say the maths section c was challenging and that the reasoning bit was confusing at times. So will see what the outcome is! Hard to tell from the boys feedback!
