I haven't seen another thread similar to previous years, so thought it would be beneficial to start one as exams are now 1 month away.
I think SHHS, UCS, KCJS and WUS are all in October.

Also - Curious to see if number of applicants are down this year, with Labour's VAT raid.

Well he seems to think it was around 90 boys but it seemed a fair bit more to me. I was thinking more around the 150 mark? My son found it ok too, he did say the maths section c was challenging and that the reasoning bit was confusing at times. So will see what the outcome is! Hard to tell from the boys feedback!

yes, I thought around 120... so still a lot...

alquora · 14/10/2024 11:25

My son sat 8+ too, reasoning was the most difficult. Did you get any idea how many questions were there for reasoning? Maths seemed manageable but still missed couple of questions.

No idea about how many questions but I do remember him saying that they had to do a fair bit of underlining

Has the details for WUS on Friday been sent to everyone already? I can't see anything on my mailbox yet! Shall I panic?

Yes - they were sent a couple of weeks ago. Our son is in the morning sitting, I think there are 2 sittings. No section will be on iPads; everything will be paper based.

@Caps0218 thank you! I will chase them today via email and call tomorrow.

ThePractical · 14/10/2024 21:11

Yes, we were sent the details last week. DS is sitting the test on Friday morning. Is WUS test going to be even more challenging than KCS? :(

I would say it’s the most competitive, 400 boys applying for 22 places and only 60 going through to 2nd round.
i would assume English comprehension and Verbal reasoning will be harder, probably the hardest out of all the schools.
Maths will be more standard format, problems etc…..

Trying to gauge how they decide between morning or afternoon? We are in the first half of the alphabet
i wonder if it’s alphabetical?

Not sure about the allocation really. I’m just glad that it’s done by afternoon, so we can relax and get started with weekend as soon as possible! :)

I doubt that the WUS test is more difficult than KCS (or SPJ). It also doesn’t really matter how difficult it is, as they’re competing against each other and there’s no cut-off score or objective standard. The 60 boys with the top (age-adjusted) scores will go to the second round, where they will then be assessed both on academic ability/potential and “softer” factors such as behaviour, kindness, “spark” and just generally being the right “fit”.

WUS (like KCS and SPJ) wants a mix of different types of boys — super geniuses, sporty, artistic, musical, etc. Of course they will all be academically capable (say within the top 5%), but it isn’t entirely focussed on academics.

Edited

I 100% agree with this and think this is the most sensible explanation of ‘what they are looking for’

Caps0218 · 15/10/2024 16:19

100% agree, they are looking for all types of characters, but obviously bright boys. Nevertheless, the competition is fiercer as they only take 60 through and in the words of one the admission people, boys who do better academically in the tests will have a better chance, which is only natural.

My DS also sat the 8+ this year for KCJS. He found it overall challenging. Couldn’t get much out of him.

Not yet, do we know if they will get back to everyone today?

user1493044974 · 16/10/2024 12:31

The website says everyone will be informed today. Fingers crossed.

2minutesplease · 16/10/2024 12:51

I think they will let us know closer to the end of the day. I heard many (if not all) schools that so parents don’t start calling to school with questions and sleep on the news.

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 16/10/2024 13:13

Last year someone I know didn't get through and they were notified before lunch. No news might be good news?!

SWlondonmum123 · 16/10/2024 13:18

Last year results were out around 12.30pm

viking777 · 16/10/2024 13:24

For everyone? Thank you

SWlondonmum123 · 16/10/2024 13:28

7+ results last year were released around 12.30pm for everyone last year. Perhaps they are doing it towards the end of the day today as someone suggested, parents may be calling the school for feedback etc

Cloudbinky · 16/10/2024 13:29

Good news was around 14.30

SWlondonmum123 · 16/10/2024 13:35

We didn’t pass last year and were informed around 12.30 and remember others from school who also didn’t get through were told at the same time. I’m not sure in that case if it was only rejections at 12.30 and good news later 🤷🏽‍♀️

viking777 · 16/10/2024 13:44

Thank you very much! We are so nervous- first school.
