7+ exams 2024

Anyone else prepping for the 7+ this year? We are trying to work out how many schools to do exams for. Live in SW London and thinking about SPJS, KCS, WUS and Latymer. Seems like a lot for a 6yo but my understanding is it's best to do a few as their performance on the day May really vary at that age.
What resources are everyone using?

I think we have to expect results tomorrow now!

Justanothermom333 · 05/12/2023 19:35

hopefully it will be good news. We sat in Highgate today, he said it’s quite hard.

Justanothermom333 · 06/12/2023 14:23

spj offers are in!

Nightlite888 · 06/12/2023 14:24

We got a no. Congrats to all those with offers!

@Nightlite888 were you told your DSs ranking?

Nightlite888 · 06/12/2023 15:04

No…I do intend to seek feedback though. There was a note about trying at 8+ but not sure if that’s standard.

Caps1974 · 06/12/2023 15:14

@Nightlite888 Surprised they didn't tell you in the parents interview, the previous head always did.

PS - That note is not standard....I assume your DS was probably somewhere between 50-75 (after the first set of tests), hence the note about 8+.

Nightlite888 · 06/12/2023 15:16

In the interview all they said was that hd was in the top 95…when I asked for more detailed info, the head said he didn’t have it to hand…

What a weird thing for him to say, as they took the the top 95 through.

Nightlite888 · 06/12/2023 15:19

Exactly. That’s why I asked for further detail but it wasn’t forthcoming.

sherry778 · 06/12/2023 15:21

When we tried 7 plus last year, we were told to try 8 plus even though we didn't enter the second stage...I assume they would recommend that to most of the candidates except those who really behind...( like bottom 25%)

Nightlite888 · 06/12/2023 15:23

Thanks! That’s why I want to know where he ranked. No point trying again if it’s not a case of just missing out or they are not interested

sherry778 · 06/12/2023 15:23

You can ask about the performance details of your son for sure. My son had just missed the second stage line.

Caps1974 · 06/12/2023 15:25

Always interesting to see how much movement there is in the final assessment day. Is it rare for someone who scored 95th to make it into the top 50, similarly someone in the top 25, is he pretty much safe. I think they should tell parents the rank. Kings gives parents the quartiles. The old SPJS head would go as granular as decile!

Justanothermom333 · 06/12/2023 17:02

I am quite curious how many kids are offered and how many are on the reserve list.

ash90603 · 06/12/2023 20:37

Have heard that those who show good potential but not yet there are encouraged to apply next year for 8+.. not all get that invitation. So its a big one.. if the gap is wider then students are asked to apply for 11+...

Justanothermom333 · 06/12/2023 20:50

Interesting. I thought it’s a standard template encourage more applicants for 8+. Is it similar with WUS as I am trying to figure out if that’s the subtle message they are telling us.

Being the first exam he’s ever taken, my son decided not to do ANYthing for Maths but scored 97% in English.

Caps0218 · 06/12/2023 21:32

@Justanothermom333 SPJS gave you his score….thats an incredible score in English…well done to your DS

SWlondonmum123 · 06/12/2023 21:40

We too didn’t make it. Didn’t get a reason again just the message to try again at 8+.
Felt so disappointed today as I was hoping for a good outcome but there’s always good in everything :)
we are trying again for 8+ for SPJ/WUS and KCS. A year can make a big difference to their maturity and confidence and I think if you’ve managed to get through the academic process then there’s a good chance you can have success at 8+.
all the best to everyone with whatever schools your boys go on to :)

sherry778 · 06/12/2023 21:41

Very well said! These are precious experiences and lessons when look back in future:)

Cadeaux82 · 06/12/2023 21:49

@sherry778 , we are in the same situation for next year, will be doing 8+. Emotionally my DS was not ready this year for 7+. Was wondering whether you have started 8+ prep straight after 7+ in Dec or gave your DS a break? Which resources did you use? And good luck for this year!

Caps0218 · 06/12/2023 21:52

8+ is harder isn’t it? As in each of the schools takes 1 class of around 18?

sherry778 · 06/12/2023 21:56

We almost gave up from 2 months before 7plus last year because DS didn't want to learn and practice. We are in state school and none of his classmates did extra learning, which made him feel unfair...

After December he slowly picked up the study and went gradually better day by day. We did have bad days but most of the days we felt happily learned new things. 8 plus is hard as fewer candidates will be selected compared to 7 plus...however kids are more mature and calmer than one year ago! Thank you and good luck to you too!

Cadeaux82 · 06/12/2023 21:56

@Caps0218 I thought competition is more or less the same as less number of applicants but I could be wrong

KCS 14; St Paul's 18; WUS 22 for 8 plus.
