How did your year 6 find the reading SAT today?

My DS did well in all his SAT practice papers, but said the reading paper today was tough.

My DS got reading greater depth, just Didn't in mocks but we had practiced comprehension when we realised. Just at home with some sats practice books but ten min 4/5 a week for about 3-4 weeks.

They are reported to the secondary school by the DfE, the school doesn’t pass them on.

Mine did well, GD as predicted by their teachers. I think the hype around the bats paper was a bit silly really. They’ve adjusted the marking scheme to account for it. They all did the same papers so can compare one against the other.

It’s not really ‘adjusting’ to drop a paper’s threshold by 10%, so much so that the pass mark is less than 50%.

What kind of paper says a student is ‘at standard’ with less than half marks and drops the national percentage passing? Come on.

They adjusted the mark scheme as they knew if they'd stuck with the previous year's pass mark, it would have been carnage.

A National scandal about how ridiculous it was (and the bat paper was ridiculous and a stupid measure for what the kids can do) on a par with the 2016 car-crash when only 53% reached the 'Y6 standard' for Reading / SPAG / Maths because the standard they'd set was utterly ludicrous and not fit for purpose.

And I say this as a Y6 teacher whose cohort did brilliantly this year...

Feenie · 13/07/2023 06:48

Yes, mine did too.

Wouldn’t have been without the unprecedented sliding of thresholds though.

To put it in perspective, they sometimes change by one or two to adjust for difficulty.

Five marks is nuts.

Got results today, reading and spag greater depth, maths as expected. Which is pretty much what she got in mocks. But yeah I suppose without dropping pass marks she wouldn't have those results.

CoffeeWithCheese · 14/07/2023 16:08

DD1 got her results back - 118 for the reading paper of doom (her best score). GD for reading/SPAG, probably just one mark short of it for Maths if it existed still - which about fits her historic profile of breezing through English and being so on the borderline for Maths that, to quote her Y2 teacher, "she might make it - I wouldn't want to stake my performance management on it" (I got on well with her Y2 teacher - hence the honest appraisal of how borderline she is).

She'd enjoyed the reading paper - came home in a foul mood after the Maths reasoning one.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 14/07/2023 18:18

DD's scaled score was 120 off a mark of 47. At the time I commented that she found the questions fine but only just finished the paper and didn't have time to check her answers.

She got 120 for SPAG and 119 for maths.

PreplexJ · 14/07/2023 19:24

DD got 119 for reading and 120 for SPAG and maths.
She did 11+ so thinks SAT is much easier but reading is harder than the school practice one.

boysmuminherts · 15/07/2023 05:16

I thought you couldn't get 119? It used to be 118 then 120?

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 15/07/2023 07:02

@boysmuminherts this year a score of 46 gives a scaled score of 119
