I remember reading a thread this time last year about this but my searches have proved fruitless.

About 7 or 8 of us mums will be clubbing together. Last year we bought M&S vouchers and a bunch of flowers.

What would you most like to receive from your pupils and their parents?

TIA

pheebe, yoyu've got a big chip on your shoulders

Pheebe - actually people do give lots of gifts to nurses, care workers, ambulancemen & the like.

Usually hospitals say that staff cannot accept personal gifts (might lay them open unwanted to accusations of bribery etc) but they do have special ward funds which can be used to pay for extras that the NHS can't pay for e.g. Xmas parties, extra training or buying a new kettle for the nurses kitchen. These funds have lots of money in them.

Obviously a personal thank you is the most touching but you are just being mean to begrudge teachers some little extras.

I'd rather show my children that it is nice to buy people presents than save up my money just to spend on ourselves.

Well I have gone for the Unicef inspired gifts and we are sending 500 pencils to a school somewhere in the world - my five year old thought it was a lovely idea as she loves drawing so much, and it has taught her that others are not as fortunate as she is. Her class has at least 5 members of staff, so I qwent for the easier option!

Lush stinks! Makes me barf! Far too sweet smelling of weird things.

Pheebe....I bet your children get excited about their birthday, dont they?!!

or do you not bother because it is a waste of money and materialistic!

I would always buy a thank you present for a nurse and wine for a doctor to say thanks.

I also bought a hamper of wine for my lawyer.

When we had a restaurant, people often bought us gifts to say thank you for outstanding service or fab food.

it is called being nice

collision, you've reminded me of the time DH came to the hospital after I'd had DS1 holding huge box of chocolates... yum, I thought how sweet of him... then he handed them to the midwife!

collision · 03/07/2007 23:20

LOL Mrs Scavo.....I bought a present for both my midwives and the SCBU where DS1 was for a fortnight!

I sent in 2 punnets of strawberries and some creme fresh last year for the teacher and her assistants figured they would have too many chocs/wine/flowers/and trinkets.
but i like the books for classroom idea if i had the finances!

If I was a primary teacher I would like a Alpha Romeo sports car. Red. With leather seats and walnut dashboard. And some smiling respect and appreciation from the parents. No homemade fudge or badly spelt cards thanks.

muppetgirl that's really sweet about the scraper.

Right am going to ask DS1 and DD what we should get their teachers.

SueW · 04/07/2007 11:37

After DD has been in hospital we always take in boxes of chocolates or similar to say thank you to the nurses. We have also taken in chocs for the consultant's secretary and sometimes a box of choc biscuits, particularly if we have an appointment at the beginning of clinic, for the cons, sec and ever-present medical students as we have noticed they are all partial to a little something with their cuppa!

We recently had to call an ambulance and I'd love to send something to say thanks but no idea where they were based

handlemecarefully · 04/07/2007 14:16

Is that right Cat? Wow didn't realise that. Will see if I can find out re dd's teacher for certain
