3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2019

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2019!) 😉

@Nyclondel - i have messaged you privately.

mumteacher · 20/12/2018 20:59

Sliver1504 it may depend on what she was asked in round 1 (happy for you to PM so we may eliminate) but round 2 will be more pencil control, loads of conversations about the environment around them. Eg when presented with woolly hat and glove are they able to predict the weather/season? Floating/sinking objects - great one for bath time. Difference between older people and younger children - grey hair , wrinkles.

@mumteacher, thanks for getting back. Sorry I forgot to add that this is for 7 plus.

tidyyourbedroom · 22/12/2018 20:57

Could anyone confirm the school day times for Highgate junior school please?

Is wrap around care offered before and after school and if so, to what time? I can't seem to find this information on their website. Thank you.

bluefolder · 27/12/2018 12:07

@tidyyourbedroom the people on this thread are those sitting for the schools so less likely to have that info. I'd ring the school or post a new thread with the school name in the thread title.

RunRunMum · 01/01/2019 23:42

Who has assessments kicking off this week?

coffeeincosta · 03/01/2019 10:56

Mine is halfway through Habs boys 7+ (chews nails).

RunRunMum · 03/01/2019 11:31

@coffeeincosta good luck to you

Confsdmum · 03/01/2019 17:22

My daughter has her 4+ assessment in habs tomorrow morning Confused

sevenplusmum · 04/01/2019 14:14

We had UCS today. Anyone else for UCS? How did it go? Was there no creative writing in UCS?

Jifey · 04/01/2019 14:31

Same. There was no essay writing I am told. Just problem questions, spelling test, comprehension and non verbal reasonsing. DS and friends said it was pretty easier than expected.
Does anyone know when results are expected?

sevenplusmum · 04/01/2019 14:44

@jifey:
DS found it easy too. I couldn't find any information on results date either - nothing on their letter or website.

coffeeincosta · 04/01/2019 16:49

Results letters posted end jan, 29th or thereabouts.

CB2009 · 04/01/2019 22:05

Tidy your bedroom. Highgate Junior School. Gates open from 8am. Bell rings at 8:25am. Parents can drop at 8am as children supervised. School finishes at 3:40pm. Wide choice of after school clubs which run until 4:40pm. Hope helpful

Tolacar · 05/01/2019 17:04

Does anyone know what the chances of getting into Hampton Prep from the waitlist? DS on the waitlist but have to wait for all other deadlines...tense few weeks.

Jifey · 05/01/2019 17:25

@Coffeeincosta is it then the case that there are no interviews for ucs? That’s an awfully long time from an exam which took place on the 4th. Is your response from previous experience?

coffeeincosta · 05/01/2019 19:04

The interviews/group activity was last term, ucs sees everyone twice.

coffeeincosta · 05/01/2019 19:07

And they have a gentleman's agreememt woth habs, highgate, belmont etc to all send offer letters on the same day.

coffeeincosta · 05/01/2019 19:27

They also need a couple of weeks for all the schools to talk to each other to work out, of those offered more than one place, who is likely to go where, so that the schools know by how much they can over-offer.

coffeeincosta · 05/01/2019 19:27

@Jifey if your son did UCS, how do you not know that the first round was last term? didn't he go?

Jifey · 05/01/2019 22:18

@coffeeincosta, it’s interesting that you consider the group assessment and test done in October the final post exam interview.
All the applicants had to attend that, and we were made to understand that it was a warm up and all the boys who attended that will still sit the exam.
Other schools including Highgate offer interviews post-exam before the final offer.
Do you have a child in Ucs JB? and did you child get an unconditional offer without an interview with the head?

coffeeincosta · 06/01/2019 07:49

@Jifey who told you the first round was a warmup? It was the group exercise/interview, all the paperwork from UCS was quite clear that they see everyone twice. There is no further round.

Some schools do paper then a cut and an interview, others see everyone twice or see everyone for both papers and group exercises, it has always been like that.

coffeeincosta · 06/01/2019 08:37

did you child get an unconditional offer without an interview with the head?

all offers at 7+ are unconditional, there is no such things as a conditional offer at 7+

CB2009 · 06/01/2019 09:38

As already mentioned. UCS step 1 is activities in class. Group work. All entrants sit the exams. No further steps or meeting head. You then either get a straight offer or reject. Siblings may be tipped off ahead of formal letters if they are to be rejected. This has been the UCS 7+ way for some years now

coffeeincosta · 06/01/2019 09:42

Yes, I think most schools will have a quiet word with parents of siblings who aren't going to be offered a place. Sibling policies vary from no help to a significant lowering of the threshold.
