Joined it recently, but might have to leave - so depressed at the level of incompetence! This weekend I've seen threads from a teacher of 30+ years who says that phonics is to blame for all her non-readers in Y2, a teacher who wants to know how to collect evidence in Y2 for explaining writers' use of figurative language (don't bother - you're reading the Y6 interim framework, love Wink) and a teacher who wants advice on dealing with 'figgity' children. And loads if threads asking to be spoonfed to plan EVERYTHING down to the last detail. Or threads that say 'do we have to teach such and such? Where can I find out? Thanks in advance.' READ THE BLOODY CURRICULUM!

And breathe.

Oh that "writing for a boy" was awful. Why on earth would you write that!!!! All the Twinkl FB groups are pretty dire these days IMO.

jennielou75 · 21/11/2016 20:20

I love the ones that put up clearly scaffolded, teacher directed, rewritten work by a 6 year old genius and tweely ask if this child's work is good enough for expected....then the deluge of wow thats amazing and will def get exceeding posts!!!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/11/2016 20:37

Good to know somethings don't change, even if the curriculum does. Grin

Think that used to happen on levelling threads on TES.

Feenie · 21/11/2016 21:45

Tonight's offering - nth from Twinkl but Facebook KS1 - specifically Year 2 group and very similar in terms of bollocks like this:

no exclamation mark needed on an exclamation sentence...
does need a verb though x

Hmm

Then - from same imbecile poster:

'you can use them, but I don't think they're vtal... could be wrong. i'm new to y2 after my NQT last year in y5/6 xx'

And - my favourite:

''Charlotte Read' (tagged) 'so it doesn't have to contain a noun to use an !'

How do these people get through the day???

Poster A says that exclamation sentences don't have to have an exclamation mark (of course they do!)

Poster A then changes mind slightly and concedes that they could have one - but they're not 'vital'. They are.

Poster B tags someone else and announces excitedly that a sentence doesn't have to contain a noun to use an exclamation mark!

Confused Confused Confused

The clue is sort of in the name 'exclamation sentence', isn't it?

Dread to think what will happen if you bring up what words exclamation sentences have to start with.

BetweenTwoLungs · 21/11/2016 22:48

I find I see a lot of the opposite - someone posts a piece of writing by a y6 genius, amazing in every way, three sides of A4, and all replies are 'great writing hun, would say nearly at y3 expected level'

Feenie · 23/11/2016 21:56

Hi all! Has anyone had any information on whether there will definitely be a ks1 spa test in may 2017 and what is the situation with the handwriting objective. Last year it was joined just for greater depth- is this the case this year and where have you found this out? Many thanks! Xxxx

ARA, anyone? You know, the statutory document that you have to follow 'coz it's, you know - statutory?

OP posts:
Rigbyroo · 23/11/2016 22:01

Hahahahahaha! I could cry reading some of this shit. It pains me that these people are allowed in a classroom.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/11/2016 22:51

Now, now, Feenie I think we all know that most people have never bothered to read the ARA.

Giving the level 2 AND the level 3 tests, anyone?

Feenie · 24/11/2016 06:53

Fair point, Rafa!

And why would you read the statutory document that contains everything about a statutory process and holds you, the head and the governors to account legally?

No idea. Seems like a waste of time to me. Grin

You've just reminded me about being told I clearly know nothing about phonics because children aren't taught alternative spellings in reception and you definitely don't teach children the [schwa] sound at all because that confuses children and ruins their spelling.

And yes, that's a year 1 teacher that doesn't know the difference between using the schwa at the end of sounds like 'suh', 'muh' and using the schwa as one of the 44+ sounds in words.

PhilODox · 24/11/2016 09:50

Sorry, stealth posting here, as not a teacher... but this thread explains a lot about last year, and the frustration we had about what DS was learning, thank you!

Feenie · 26/11/2016 08:40

(Not twinkl, another one)

I have some children in my class who are very behind with their phonics. They are currently working at Phase 2. They will be sitting the screening test again this year. My worry is that with them only being at Phase 2, they are not going to make it to Phase 5 meaning they may not pass the test this year. Can anyone suggest some advice on how I could speed up my phonics teaching? Can I double up on phonics sessions or would that be too much?

How do they manage to dress themselves on a morning? Hmm

Feenie · 26/11/2016 10:42

Should she spend more than 20 minutes a day teaching her several non-reading y2s how to actually read? Hmmm. It's a tough one.

Omg, I saw that one, Beananti - loads of silly sycophantic answers until someone with sense eventually said 'Just give them enough pencils'!

There were people like on my PGCE Facebook group.

I am baffled how someone who can find their way onto an internet forum can't just google 'lesson ideas for.....(whatever)' if they're really stuck. There's loads out there. Confused

SaltyMyDear · 26/11/2016 19:07

Well, I do have some good news for you all.

Reading Recovery is no longer compulsory in NSW, Australia!

There is a young man trolling about displays on both Twinkl sites tonight - the funniest thing is some members are replying seriously

Feenie · 30/11/2016 20:53

I saw that - assumed it was a woman for some reason. Yes, comments are quite funny!

Please don't leave the group, feenie. This thread is gruesomely entertaining Grin
