Suppose you had just found out that the other kids in DS' Y1 Class

all had reading books and records that they brought home every week ... that teacher wrote notes on how they read in class in, and parents wrote notes on how they read at home

and they'd had them for 4 or 5 WEEKS

and your child didn't have one (hadn't had one since Reception last year)

What would you think /do?

Has dc lost it - I think it's the norm everwhere to have them?

cece · 10/10/2006 19:39

I think I might mention it to the teacher the very next day

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 19:39

I assumed that they weren't having them this year

I'm really upset TBH

Would definitely want to know why. Don't you have some form of evening or communication which sets out what is expected for Y1? We all had a session which explained how often reading would come home, when spellings were due (and how to teach them), simlarly bonds etc?

Is it just your ds, or are different teachers doing different things?

Miriam2 · 10/10/2006 19:40

I would want to know damn well why not.

Ladymuck · 10/10/2006 19:40

Perhaps it is because ds is so far ahead that he's outgrown it?!

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 19:41

DS hasn't been given one .. he said something yesterday about I have to find his reading record from last year which made me think so I checked with other parents today and they all have brand spanking new ones and have had them for 5 weeks ... at least the 4 or 5 parents I spoke to had

He hasn't brought home a reading book all term

I feel really crap that I hadn't noticed / twigged before tbh

SherlockLGJ · 10/10/2006 19:41

I would be up to the school like a shot.

How accurate is your information ? Is it just a case of Mummy Olympics ?

LIZS · 10/10/2006 19:41

that you should be having a conversation with the teacher as to to whether dc may have mislaid it or if there is somethign you should be talking about. odd

lulumama · 10/10/2006 19:42

speak to teacher tomorrow

whether dc forgot it or never got one, very remiss of school not to send a letter home to alert you to the fact he had lost it / never got it... if it is the schools error, i'd raise merry hell!

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 19:42

DS is NOT a good reader yet

and needs coaxing to practice

and sounds out phonics and doesn't like words with many syllables

He also says teacher doesn't read with him in class .. but I don't know whether to believe that one (although his friend backed him up) .. but if they do it by calling the name on the reading record he might have been missed out

but for 5 weeks????

OP posts:
TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 19:45

there are only 22 kids in his class and a teacher plus assistant so don't think he could have been missed out

am feeling really concerned

don't want to play this wrong with teacher

but something has bloody well gone wrong hasn't it?

OP posts:
katierocket · 10/10/2006 19:47

Don't blame you for being upset. It is very odd isn't it. Only thing to do is speak to teacher.

lulumama · 10/10/2006 19:56

if not a good reader, needs extra support.... how very odd

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 20:00

Um... DS1 (7 and Y3) denied all knowledge of a reading record book. It came home last week and he's been filling in books that he's read at school.

Gobbledispook · 10/10/2006 20:02

God I'd be livid. There's something amiss there. I know you feel a bit bad about not noticing but how can the teacher not realise he's not been read with??

I go in and do reading and there is a folder with a page for each child and at the front, a class list with dates across teh top adn you tick off when a child is read with. No child could be missed.

It will have nothing to do with how he's doing at reading - all children have a reading record regardless, surely?!

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 20:05

am feeling really crap .. I should've worked out there was something amiss before

OP posts:
Gobbledispook · 10/10/2006 20:07

Oh Twig
Like you said, you thought maybe they hadn't started that whole thing up yet - you trust the school and expect them to be in control!

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 20:11

Twiglett, there may be nothing wrong. If I trusted 100% what my children came home and told me I would assume they were not learning anything whatsoever.

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 20:12

5 weeks and no reading book at home .

5 weeks and no comments from me to teacher about DS home reading

5 weeks and no comments from teacher to me re: DS school reading

I don't see how something can't be wrong there, do you? honestly?

(I am obsessing but partly due to amount of red wine in my system)

OP posts:
bosscat · 10/10/2006 20:12

how strange. I'd be feeling really upset with the school. How could they miss him out? Where is his book? Where does he say it is?

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 20:12

You just need to go and chat to the teacher. "I'm sure there must be some mistake/misunderstnading but LittleTwiglett says he's not been given a reading record or been heard reading..."

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 20:26

I know you're right Soupy ...

Lact8 · 10/10/2006 20:36

Ah TwigTwoolett, don't beat yourself up about it.

I find the whole issue of homework confusing as it changes from year to year and then even teacher to teacher.

Ds1 gets reading, writing, maths and general knowledge every week adn it takes us hours to complete.

Our next door neighbour is in the same year but a different class and gets nothing, no reading, spellings, anything!

If ds1 hadn't brought a book home with him I would've just assumed he had one of the 'no homework' teachers. And I wouldn't have sussed it unless I'd seen one of his friends with a homework bag either.

I'd go with SoupDragon's advice. He'll get a reading record. They'll make sure he does reading in class as they'll know they should've done it earlier and he'll catch up in no time.

singersgirl · 10/10/2006 20:56

Please don't beat yourself up about it. You didn't know. DS1 (Y4) has yet to bring home a reading record this year, despite a letter yesterday saying could we please sign it every time he reads.

And your DS probably is being heard in school, just maybe not one to one with the teacher. I know in my DSs' classes they do guided reading in groups and the teacher just writes a general comment.

But definitely chat to the teacher ASAP - I think it's a bit strange he hasn't brought home any books if everyone else has. But my boys' teachers don't always check their bags, so she may just have assumed there was a book and a reading record, and you just weren't listening to him...
