all had reading books and records that they brought home every week ... that teacher wrote notes on how they read in class in, and parents wrote notes on how they read at home

and they'd had them for 4 or 5 WEEKS

and your child didn't have one (hadn't had one since Reception last year)

What would you think /do?

I just wanted to update this, because I was so grateful for all your help at the time

About 3 weeks after he started getting reading books sent home we felt it all 'click into place' and he was suddenly able to read

He is now bringing home ORT level 8 books (approximate reading age of 7.6) in the 2nd term of year 1 (he's 5.11)

so .. if anyone is worried about their child's reading .... don't .. its a clicky thing and it moves in jumps and starts

Great news Twig! It is great when it clicks.

I have only just seen this thread and well done for sticking to your guns. My son was 6 in august and is in year 2. At the age of 5.11 he had a reading age of 7.1. So your son is now doing better than mine. I must admit that my sons school is probably not the best in the area and that his year are behind compared to where they should be. He is one of the youngest in the clas and s one of the clever kids in the clas. If he was in another scholl he would only be average. Explains alot about his school. Luckly, My sister is a teacher and she has helped me out abit. She has even provided me with things that my school has not. If it wasn't for her help and the exra stuff I do with him, god knows what stage he would be at now.

Good luck in the future and keep going. If he is enjoying reading get him to read other stuff at home. I brought my son some Roald Dhal books for christmas and I am planning to sit down with him at some point and we are going to read these books together. Hopefully this will get his reading age up evern further.

Thanks for the update Twiglett: that's great to hear.

And I agree completely about reading suddenly all clicking into place.
