all had reading books and records that they brought home every week ... that teacher wrote notes on how they read in class in, and parents wrote notes on how they read at home

and they'd had them for 4 or 5 WEEKS

and your child didn't have one (hadn't had one since Reception last year)

What would you think /do?

When DS1 was in Y2, (just 6 at the start) the teacher never checked his bag, so homework would sit in there for weeks (no one ever seemed to ask for it), books would remain unchanged, he would choose vastly inappropriate books like ones he had read in Reception or "The Collins Oxford School Dictionary".... But nobody ever checked...It used to infuriate me. He was only 6, FFS.

Sounds like the teacher needs a rocket up her arse.

MerlinsBeard · 10/10/2006 21:16

could you turn it a different way? could you say that you think you have lost your DS's reading book? and worry that he will fall behind?

iota · 10/10/2006 21:17

I think you should knuckle down and Home Ed him

TwigTwoolett · 10/10/2006 21:18

no .. I think they've messed up and I think they should explain what has happened and how they will rectify it

they have a professional responsibility to treat all the kids the same .. and something has gone awry here ..

if it has happened to DS by accident .. fair enough .. but they need to learn from mistakes like this so it NEVER happens to another kid ..

IMO it takes a good few weeks for the new routine of the year to bed down. We have had a fair round of panicky phone calls ("have they really got to wear tied ties this year?" "is three homework assignments right?") before we have all sussed Yr 3 Twig.
Actually, I do think the teacher is remiss in not spotting the lack of comeback from you. She is presumably sending 21 of these home daily. How come she hasn't noticed your ds' "absence" from her records?
Honest mistakes happen, but I think you need to speak to her and get it straight. Good luck.

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 21:24

You won't know what's happened until you talk to the teacher. Do you think it's deliberate? You said you've only spoken to 5 o so other parents so this could be a complete misunderstanding. His reading won't have suffered in just 5 weeks though so don't get worked up about that.

SoupDragon · 10/10/2006 21:26

Could the teacher be exchanging last year's reading record books for new ones, reading up on how they did/what they read last year before putting the Y1 records inplace for all the pupils??

singersgirl · 10/10/2006 21:26

Yes, "rocket up her arse" might have been a bit harsh. I think Marina put it in a more reasoned way .

TwigTwoolett · 11/10/2006 08:04

at dragon's claws stroking my marmitey back

have you not noticed I'm a friggin' owl then???

hub2dee · 11/10/2006 08:24

TwigTwoolett · 11/10/2006 08:29

No worries, T. And do not fret re: reading situation. a) It is a very short period of time b) You cannot be 100% sure of situation till you've chatted with school and c) it is completely fixable in a jiffy !

In terms of Bad Problems To Have I think you've done OK !

I mean, can you imagine the daily fight against Pringles in attempting to reduce an ass the size of mine, huh, can you ?

SherlockLGJ · 11/10/2006 08:34

Good Luck Twig,

Tell them it is your birthday, they are sure to be extra nice to you.

TwigTwoolett · 11/10/2006 08:35

Good luck from me too Twig ....
The only thing you can do at this stage is find out why ... hopefully the teacher has a good reason ... if not, come back on here and we'll all tell you what to say to her Gin

SherlockLGJ · 11/10/2006 08:38

Gin!!!!!!

Do not touch the gin, until you have been.

ghosty · 11/10/2006 08:39

... did that on purpose to make Twig smile

ghosty · 11/10/2006 08:40

[wino] could work too Gin

ghosty · 11/10/2006 08:41

Emoticon typos [wino][girn]

SherlockLGJ · 11/10/2006 08:42
Grin
TwigTwoolett · 11/10/2006 08:46

they patently don't like him and just keep him locked in the store cupboard all day and then send him home .. after all he's a foul and odious child and there's probably no point at all in educating him ... just a shame they've been caught out really
