all had reading books and records that they brought home every week ... that teacher wrote notes on how they read in class in, and parents wrote notes on how they read at home

and they'd had them for 4 or 5 WEEKS

and your child didn't have one (hadn't had one since Reception last year)

What would you think /do?

Hoping for an update too. Hope it's not pistols at 3.15.

SoupDragon · 11/10/2006 10:03

I can't believe how irate some of you would be before finding out the story from the teaching staff! Small children are horribly unreliable with the "truth" - not because they're lying but because they see the world differently to us.

BloodyTenaLady · 11/10/2006 10:07

Similar happened to me, couldnt be sure they were all reading only really by what mums were saying at the 'drop off'. Mine had read once in only two months.

I just started my own reading programme at home with the Oxford Learning Tree books.

It is such a black hole when they get into school, you just dont seem to get much information and I know I am not the only mum moaning about it. Infuriating isnt it.

BloodyTenaLady · 11/10/2006 10:08

Sorry that was at Nursery son was rising 4 though and the format was for them to read every day. It never happened though.

foxinsocks · 11/10/2006 10:12

Poor Twig - I hope this is all a misunderstanding.

Malory, a lot of reception children don't get reading books (to be read by them with reading diary etc.) till late into the first term (some even later).

we get the reading books that they read to you (in reception) from half term onwards normally

I guess it is done differently at some schools

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 10:18

Yep, must be different everywhere. When ds1 was in reception last year - nobody brought books home in the first half term as they were doing jolly phonics - learning all the sounds. Then, children started to bring them home as and when they were ready. Some in October, some not till Jan.

SoupDragon · 11/10/2006 10:20

DSs school don't have reading records til Y3. They are "encouraged" to choose a book from the class and they do have regular reading with teacher/TA/parent helper.

ghosty · 11/10/2006 10:30

All schools are different soupy ... but the thing is, Twigglett's son seems to be the only one in his class without a reading record ... it is a bit odd don't you think?

I'm off to bed in a minute so will catch up with this in the morning ... hope it was all explained for you Twiglett and that you DS isn't locked in a cupboard all day

SoupDragon · 11/10/2006 10:33

He's not necessarily the only one though - Twig spoke to 5 parents. My money is on it being a misunderstanding.

ghosty · 11/10/2006 10:40

You may be right Soupy ... let's hope so ....

Night all

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 10:40

I agree soupy - I'm sure it's a misunderstanding. Or else the teacher is in big trouble for 'forgetting' mini Twig!

joelallie · 11/10/2006 10:44

Yep. I think it's some sort of misunderstanding. There is a kind of weird information-warp that occurs somewhere between the classroom and the playground - info gets lost or distorted before the kids even get to their parents. They may intend to tell you, the words may be on their lips as they leave the classroom but somewhere between the two places ....it just disappears!!

I wouldn't get upset or angry until I'd spoken to the teacher. May be a good reason, may be a misunderstanding. Interested to know though...

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 10:45

Twig, I really do have to go out in a minute - where the devil are you?!

hub2dee · 11/10/2006 11:37

I've just got a text. She asked the TA and her ds had been singled out because he didn't want to read aloud, so they thought there was no point in the homework book. She tracked down the teacher and had a fist fight and is in the HT's chambers awaiting the local nick !

Bozza · 11/10/2006 11:41

Really - she has been there all morning? or are you having us on hub? Also sounds dodgy that because her DS didn't want to read aloud at school he wasn't given the opportunity to do it at home.

Come on twig, full story, not cryptic messages via hub.

hub2dee · 11/10/2006 11:47

I think if she could post, she would.

She'll probably get a caution for assault, or max 6 month sentence.

katierocket · 11/10/2006 12:02

Oh bum. Been without broadband all morning. Finally managed to get dial up working so I could see what happened and she's not come back.

I suspect H2D is taking the michael?

hub2dee · 11/10/2006 12:08

I am only joshing. Twiglett would not boff the teacher. I am sure she is just shopping, going to the gym, attending a meditation class or giving a lecture on "Diversity in Cultural Dynamics - Bartering Systems in Communist Societies: No Cash No Capitalism ?"

Earlybird · 11/10/2006 12:09

Hub2dee - did she really have a fistfight with the teacher?

foxinsocks · 11/10/2006 12:10

hub, you are very naughty

BudaBeast · 11/10/2006 12:12

hub - now now - behave!

Or

Do we need to start a MN collection to pay Twig's bail?????
