dd2 has written a story - can anyone tell me how she is doing?

"Once upon a time there was a grown up Fairy. She had two fairy children. They were going to the park. One of the fairy children saw a slide. That child went to play on it. Then the other fairy child went to play on it too. Then after all that it was time to go home. At home it was lunch time. They had three sandwiches and some fruit. After lunch they went to some shops. Then they went home. At home it was tea time."

She had help spelling 'slide' and 'sandwiches' but otherwise it is all her own work. Punctuation as above (done by her). She started out writing her 'p's backwards, but noticed herself, and self corrected, and went through her work finding them all to correct.

She is in Year 1. Where would this put her, levels-wise, out of curiosity?

Obviously you'd need a range of writing to give an exact level, but I would say that's a good 1a. It has some elements of 2c but not enough to say that she is working at that level.

thank you. yes, understand re: range of writing. from what I have seen on classroom walls etc, this is fairly standard for her. I don't have any other writing at home, as such - notes here and there, invitations to friends for playdates etc., but nothing like this.

and what does that mean, in general? (). what is 'average' for a child half way through year 1? or, if easier, where 'should' she be by the end of the year?

I would say that it shows above average ability for this point in year 1.

Depending on the school 1b or 1a is what is expected by the end of year 1. I would say she's doing well for this stage in year 1.

That is excellent spelling. My DD is in year 1 and her spelling is nowhere near that good!

Surprised she spelt "grown" and "fruit" and "other"correctly but needed help with "slide."

My ds2 is 6.5 and in P2 (second year of Primary in Scotland). His effort would be more like:

wunsa pona tim der wos a gronup fere

So I'd say your dd is doing well

Thanks everyone. She seems keen, and, more importantly, happy which is the main thing.

Curiosa - she reads a lot, and I suppose she has come across 'grown' and 'fruit' more than 'slide'!

It may be that she didn't need the help, but wanted the input iyswim. She is prone to feeling a bit insecure, and sometimes wants a helpi g hand even if she doesn't need it.

She continued the story after her tea, and needed help spelling 'sausages' (guess what the fairies had for tea ) but also 'morning' which I know she can spell...

The spelling certainly is better than DS who is in year 4 and was L3 at the end of year 2.
He seems to be rated above average based on his vocabulary and understanding of word meaning rather than his ability to spell which has always seemed rather odd to me. His handwriting is appalling too. I think the school may be generous with their L3s.

Around a 1A. Some elements of 2C. To move on to 2C she'd probably need a range of connectives to make compound sentences.

It's good for this stage in the year and a bit above average. Very good spelling for her age and good punctuation.

I have a year 1 dd but not sure she would write as much as that or develop such a structure to a story as your dd has!

I did just ask her to spell those words and she also got grown, fruit and other right and slide wrong!

OK, this is what DD wrote recently:

One day a cangroo jumpt. he jumpt rilly high. So high he went too far.

1 minit lata he was at the hight of his dads hed.

5 minits lata he was a inch away from the sun.

20 seconds lata he was hia than ross84. (before you ask, apparently ross84 is a star that is higher than the sun)

He bigan to get scaerd.

he wisht his dad was there.

Then a supahero came and fluw past. the supahero was calld skellty.

Skellty saved the cangroo.

And everyone was rilly happy. The end.

I rather like it but I think her spelling leaves a lot to be desired. Capital letters and full stops all her own work, though, which I am quite pleased with.

Cangroo = kangaroo, btw.

Great stories btw

Found one of ds2's offerings from a few months ago - huge writing on 2 sheets A4 paper (hence the odd spacing) and he was running out of room towards the end...

Some letters are also back to front. We do wonder if he is dyslexic.

Pretty good. She could do with using some more describing words though to tick all the boxes. And YY to extended sentences, using and or so eg the fairy saw a slide so they went to play on it.

It makes sense, is well punctuated and has openers and time connectives. I would agree with a 1a based purely on that. I would also be interested in what her handwriting is like, does she form her letters correctly, does she have ascenders and descenders and does she have any capitals in the middle of words?
Encourage her to think of describing words, and 'name the noun' ie name the shop, describe the sandwich, describe the fairy children.

1a is the expected level by the end of the year so I think she is there or thereabouts already (based only on that and having not seen her handwriting!)
She will need to use more extensive language and connect sentences to push into a 2c. She will also have to master speech marks, question marks, commas in lists and start to expand her descriptions of things and people.
Also, she could tell the reader how the characters feel as an ending, 'the fairy children were tired out as they had had such a busy day' for eg.

She can come and be in my class please!

You do not need speechmarks for 2c. (And you do not call them speech marks any longer. They are 'inverted' commas'.)

love the jumping kangaroo and multiplying cats stories.

CheckpointCharlie - that is a brilliant summary of where dd2 is/what she could be doing - thanks so much (can you come and be her teacher, please? ).

Her handwriting is ok - quite neat and small (ish, for a 5 year old!) - was a bit wobbly writing this as se decided to write on an unlined sheet of A4, in portrait - don't think I could keep my writing straight for that! She can write cursive, but it went by the wayside a bit doing this - think it interrupted her flow a bit, so this was mostly printed, with some cursive and lots of tails. the odd capital in the middle of words (often 'f'), and a couple of letters written backwards (again, think it was due to flow, as she can write them all perfectly well; she does know the correct formation, and usually is ok, but does try to cut corners with some letters (usually 'm' and 'n' - might be copying my (atrocious) handwriting there , although I do make an effort when writing things for her, so she would be copying examples she has seen lying around, iyswim)
