Apparently a 'special lady' came and told my son and his class that God gave them a special gift so they should all say thank you to him. And they did.

Does this kind of shit go on everywhere? It's not a church school. I am an athiest. My son, aged 4, is now apparently not. He says that, thinking about it, he now thinks God is real and the reason you can't see him is because he 'lives in a different country, maybe London'.

I'm actually quite pissed off about it (not the London bit, that was funny), but if it's what happens everywhere or is some kind of statutory thing I suppose I'll have to suck it up. If it's not I may write to the head.

Although I do think more time on geography and less time on God might be better for DS Grin .

Jesus is pretty important in Muslim theology, I think. He's a messenger of God, like Mohammed.

Dd's Belgian school is entirely secular. No worship. They are separated for RE lessons - It is about 40% catholic, 40% muslim, 20% other. Dd does Ethics. It comes through osmosis though and I have had to educate MYSELF about stuff eg it was Eid yesterday - many children not in school. And dd wants a friend to come play for the day (from a muslim family) and there are restraints/worries of course about food etc. I grew up in a very non-ethnically diverse area and am a bit clueless. I continue with my "some people believe" mantra and respect what others believe.

Overseas my kids had assembly 1 x per week. They would sing school and national anthem.

I accept the religion is a part of our lives though i am an ateist, DH is muslim and we want to leave our child to find his own way. I was astounded when one night at AE reception while registering DS to be seen, receptionist asked what his religion was. we said "he doesn't have one" she looked up and said what do you mean? My husband said "he's 2 years old he doesn't have a religion" I mean how inappropriate to discuss this when you have an sick child on your arms?
Anyway, I do not want him to go to a religious school, but i wouldn't withdraw him from assembly as it is a part of the school ritual. I will probably be p.. off when he comes home singing hosanna but hey, i had a brief episode with god (so mum tells me) when I was about 6-7 so he'll probably be over it.
Do they all do Christmas play/ nativity story in state schools?
I will find explaining religion harder then explaining sex...

Muslims and Christians and Jews all believe in the same God, right? The God of Abraham? Yaweh/Elohim?

GrimmaTheNome · 07/11/2012 08:49

Cheerful, my observation is that not all Christians believe in the same god!
