Unsure, but know that last year DD's school put her yr 2 SATS results at the end of her report, so I'm expecting that that will be where DS's will be.

Iamnotminterested · 19/06/2012 17:56

Do you even find out? I thought it was an in-house testing tool?

Can just imagine if parents DO get told, another thing to compare in the playground?

madmum04 · 19/06/2012 17:59

Our school said we would find out after all the testing was done whether our child had passed or failed, so im presuming that will probably be either end of the week or next week

mrz · 19/06/2012 17:59

You will be told but schools can do the check up to the 29th June so I would expect many schools will include it in reports at the end of term. Schools must inform parents of the results.

Quip · 19/06/2012 18:33

what's the passmark?

EvilTwins · 19/06/2012 18:35

32/40 I think. Dsis is a yr1 teacher.

mrz · 19/06/2012 18:53

that's right it's 32/40

puffberto · 19/06/2012 18:56

DD's not aware she's had a test. Noone at school has told us there was one.

ElbowFan · 19/06/2012 18:56

"Do you even find out? I thought it was an in-house testing tool?"
I think that is the problem. The powers that be are convinced that phonics is the way forward in improving reading standards so want to collect national data to see how many children are at what sort of a level in using phonics.
With that announcement came a barrage of teaching tools and tips to 'improve' schools use of phonics, and everyone is suddenly under pressure because it is seen as 'pass' or 'fail'.

If it was collecting data on childrens height I have nodoubt that the competition would be on to see who could make their child taller for the 'test'.

Children are working above or working below a given level.
Depending on the result they may need more help or they may not.
They may be, heaven forfend, 'average'!!
Once there has been sufficient national data amassed and analysed, it may actually show something useful. - But it won't be for a few years.

ElbowFan · 19/06/2012 18:57

PS Bravo for your school puffberto - that is as it shoud be!!

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:04

I'm not sure how a child won't be aware when they have to be taken out the room to do the check 1-1 but it should be low key and only take a few minutes. Our Y1s asked if they could do the "job" again tomorrow. Every single child appeared to enjoy doing the check and it did actually throw up some useful information.

wearymum200 · 19/06/2012 19:05

Ds1 had his today; we weren't told in dvance (not a problem) and he does not describe it as a test. I wouldn't know except that he described today as "the most hectic day we ever had, miss X got everybody into groups and then everyone had to read a list of words, some real ones, some monster names, one at a time. Miss x didn't come back to class for the whole day."
And therein might lie the problem.. I strongly suspect teacher knew already who was phonically able and who was not and the day would presumably have been better spent by her helping the ones who are not?

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:08

Presumably someone was in the class helping those who are not?

mumineedapooooo · 19/06/2012 19:08

i take it its up to the teacher when she tells us then.
ds is just below average in everything so it would be nice if he passed.if he hasnt he hasnt, not the end of the world

We have to report the results to the government and usually with other tests this produces a print out for parents ... but no one has told us yet Hmm

flexybex · 19/06/2012 19:19

We've been told that our results need to be put on SIMs at the same time as the KS1/2 assessments.

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:22

Well my KS1 assessments are already on SIMs (had to be done last week)

flexybex · 19/06/2012 19:40

I love this national harmony! Ours don't have to be on SIMs until 2nd July! Grin

And.... at the writing moderation meeting very recently, the moderator on our table said, "Don't worry if we decide on a lower level. The forms with the agreed level don't mean anything. Remember you've still got a few weeks to bump it up. Don't get pressurised to enter your results early."

Sure enough, we agreed on a 2c for a piece of work that a teacher on our table had levelled at a 2b. As the teacher put the book away, she said that she was sure the child would be '2b by the end of the year'. How much writing are they going to so in the next two weeks?! Hmm

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:46

Last year the moderator asked why I had done my assessments early (in time for her visit) so this year I left it only to be asked for the results early [can't win]

FamiliesShareGerms · 19/06/2012 19:51

Puffberto - if only DS's school had the same approach. They have been talking about the test for weeks, sent words home over half term to practice, and the parent notice board this week says that the test is on Thurs and although they are sure everyone will be fine there's still time to do a bit more practice....Hmm

Quip · 19/06/2012 20:07

Sadly Ds1 knew he had a test yesterday. He told me he got 40 and the scores of most of his friends. He didn't know it was out of 40 though. He didn't seem bothered.

EvilTwins · 19/06/2012 22:28

I am Hmm at schools who have asked parents to prepare their DCs for the test. My DTDs are in yr1 and we've heard nothing- I've tried to find out if they've had it yet-I'm pretty sure they haven't. My niece, OTOH, has had prep work to do and the school had a parents' meeting about it. The whole thing is utterly ridiculous IMO.

MerryMarigold · 20/06/2012 10:31

We haven't been asked to prepare our kids for the test. The school are expecting a 30% pass rate and quite open about it. They will give us our personal result on the end of term report, though not sure when we would find out the overall school result.

feetheart · 20/06/2012 12:15

Really Shock at schools getting children to prepare for the test, that's bonkers.

No idea if DS has done his yet, he seems to do 'I don't remember' most of the time he is there (:)) and school are very good at not letting on to the children that they are being assessed.

accountantsrule · 20/06/2012 14:40

We had a letter to say it was happening this week. They said what the test involves and that the children should be familiar with this sort of thing as they practice 'nonsense' words at school all the time.

There wasn't a big deal made out of it and they just said it is a national requirement to identify where children may need additional help with phonics.

There was an article about how parents can help improve their childrens phonics knowledge, I don't think this was for preparation of the test (as we only got the letter last week) but just some general info for the future.
